What up? That was rhetorical i don't actually care.
I just finished Sandman and Lucifer and I'd really like something else in that vein to read.
Now, I'm just getting into western comics (I've read Watchmen and a hundred or two chapters of Hellblazer); I generally like their art better (plus its colored, are japs alergic to colored ink or something? whatever) and the dialogue and characters are (from the three things I've read, so what the fuck do i know) fuller and less like the standard manga formula of:

baseline nice to everyone for no reason but otherwise totally bland (mandatory for protags, optional for side characters)
+
visually distinct quirk (hair color, mole, ect. mandatory for side bitches, usually not for protags)
+
minor personality quirk that encompasses their entire character and essentially drives all actions not covered by the generic "do the right thing without progressing outside of a 10 year old's system of morality"
=
someone you can insert into or fall in love with because you basically have to create them yourself.

Watchmen was pretty good, but my least favorite of the three. I think I liked Lucifer the best, to be honest. It's the only story that I've seen tackle things of that scale (Constantine is always talking things up too much to ever really show or address them. The hell mythos has changed like 5 times in the the little bit that I've read and they made God a retard, but then undid it? whatever).

Okay this became pretty long winded but basically, what are the essentials for western comics/graphic novels? Anything else like Sandman or Lucifer? Anything else about the Endless? Any other suggestions y'all'd think I'd like?
>>
If you want more Endless, Death appears a few times in Gaiman's Books of Magic. Start with the four part mini.
Daniel appears in Morrison's JLA run.

As for essentials, Dark Knight Returns is one of the important stories, up there with Watchmen with influence. If you want more from the same author, read Batman Year One with a grain of salt, and don't read anything else Miller writes unless you want a storytime of pain.
>>
What genres or characters interest you?
Do you mind superheroes?
Do everything you want to read must be "mature"?
>>
You have good taste anon. Have you read Moore's Swamp Thing?
>>
>>84499070
Thanks for the recs. Quick question, are those Batman stories somewhat self contained? My main gripe with hero books (besides the terrible/so mediocore I'd rather it'd have been terrible writing they often have) is that they never end, so no one ever changes, no one ever dies, ect ect. That and the incestuous web of crossovers and cameos that just assume I've seen every piece of media the company has ever produced

>>84499083
I don't mind superheros, and things don't have to be mature. As long as it's interesting, or funny, or insightful, or otherwise entertaining.
>>
>>84499236
Thanks. I have heard a bit about it (mainly through Hellblazer) but I ended up reading synopsese (synopsi? synopsisis? what the fuck ever) for most of the plot and lost interest.

Also try Dial H for a visionary take on capes.
>>
>>84499083
forgot to add, I'm not too picky about genre, although I've only really noticed three different core genres for western comics. Hopefully thats just because I'm new and not in the loop for the good stuff.

Thanks for the recs! Anything you can tell me about piercing paranoia? Love me some paranoia, delusions, and whatnot so I'll probably give that a try next.
>>
>>84499249
I think you'll probably like Gillen's Journey into Mystery starring Kid Loki. Almost in the same vein as all that good ol' 80s Vertigo stuff. The only problem is a couple the of the important stories take place around Marvel events that you might want to read the synopsis for. But its a great run with some beautiful characterization.

Moore's run on Swamp Thing is really good, and I'd also recommend Morrison's Animal Man.
>>
>>84499471
Similar to Like a velvet Glove Cast in Iron? that's difficult since it is so unique even among the same creator's other works but Dial H also give a fragile sense of reality if that is what you want.

Love and Rockets. It's a anthology book of sorts by two latino brothers, its primarily a drama that follows two sets of characters that each brother created but jt does have comedy among other types of unrelated short comics throughout. Also it's an ongoing where the characters age and change with the creators since it started when they were just 20 over 30 years ago. A new quarterly ongoing comes out next month iirc which I believe should be self contained and easy to jump into but it's all worth reading. It can be hard to keep track of if you're pirating since the brothers also released mini series that tie in over the years but if you're buying it it's very easy to follow since each trade collects and divides the brothers stories in chronological order. It sounds complicated to get into(and it kind of is) but it's very rewarding to watch these characters get older as the series go on basically in real time as the comics were coming out.

Cool, I'll check it out. Loving these God type characters, it's sort of new for me. Any chance you can tell me what events I need to read up on? (this shit tripped me up with hellblazer too, although I can see how hard it would be to resist having all these awesome characters interact with each other, despite how lackluster it usually ends up).

And I've already gotten a bunch of help but I gotta ask anyways, anyone know anything similar (comics, novels, tv, anything) to The Dark Tower? It's up there with Dune as one of my favorite books, but a lot of fiction that deals with time and space/dimensions/reality ends up D-movie trash or totally half-assed (looking at you, bioshock infinite. whoever funded that piece of high budget middle school dr. who fan fiction needs to be sectioned).

>>84499614
I was more asking for a small description, or just a theme/genre for it, but fragile sense of reality is all I needed to hear to get me interested.

>>84499660
Sounds cool, I'll check it out.

Ah... Like a velvet Glove Cast in Iron is about a guy whose wife disapears, he goes to a porn cinema and sees a movie where she apears, he decides to investigate about it and is told the movie was made by a studio in a near by town, before he arrives to the town things are already off place and the town itself is a mystery bigger than whatever happen to his wife.

Seige leads into JiM. And an important arc deals with Loki's role in Fear Itself.

>Self-contained superhero stories

I think you should try to following titles then:

All Star Superman
The Killing Joke
Batman: The Long Halloween
Hulk: The End
Dr. Strange: Into Shamballa
Defenders: Indefensible
Iron Man: Extremis
Marvels

Also, you should look into Astro City.

that sounds really good, is it twin peaks-y? or its own thing? doesn't matter i guess since I'll find out for myself pretty soon anyways.

thanks I'll add these to my list. I've heard good things about the flashpoint paradox as well, is it worth reading that or should i be good with the movie on netflix?

To add a few more to that list:

Dr. Strange & Dr. Doom: Triumph & Torment
The Death of Captain Marvel
Punisher: Welcome Back Frank (even though Punisher isn't really a cape character, this is a really must read if you're looking for self-contained stories featuring characters of the Big Two)
Fury MAX: My War Gone By

Also if you enjoy Welcome Back Frank you should really read the Punisher MAX series by Garth Ennis.

haven't seen Twin Peaks so I have no idea.

From Hell and stop reading comics it'll make you autistic

Just gonna recommend my personal faves. I think Love & Rockets is the most essential. It's a couple of brothers who basically do their own thing. Jaime Hernandez primarily does stories about Maggie and her group of friends in south California. Beto mostly does stories about a town called Palomar south of the border with magic realism and big titties. Beto is also insane and does tons of neat comics.

Since you're reading Like a Velvet Glove check out Ghost World too. Maybe just read everything Clowes has ever done. Werewolves of Montpellier is my favorite Jason comic but check out whatever of his seems interesting. I Killed Adolf Hitler is a good starting point. Bottomless Belly Button and Essex County essential family/small town dramas. Sacred Heart and TEOFW (The End of the Fucking World) are great comics about shitty teens.

Operation Margarine is like an exploitation motorcycle movie about girl runaways. Just read everything by Michael DeForge, Simon Hanselmann, and Paul Pope. Hate is a really funny comic about an asshole named Buddy Bradley. Made in the 90's and set in Seattle so it's kind of imbued with that whole culture. Phonogram The Singles Club is a neat comic about how music is literally magic. It's also book 2 but a lot of people don't like book 1 so maybe skip it? What have you got to lose.
