Ledger's Joker was naturally edgy because of his worldviews, but he was believable in the way he presented himself.
Leto's Joker is veering on self-parody with how edgy he wants to be. I suppose that's the idea, but it's pretty cringeworthy.
Appearance-wise Leto wins. We'll see who fares edgier in performance.

Since he's the fourth main movie iteration, it probably should be 4edgy6me. But that's just the technical definition.
It's pretty amazing how Ledger's legacy has become that anybody who plays the Joker now has to have a mental breakdown and appear to pose a danger to themself.
His death was entirely preventable and didn't really have anything to do with the movie, but now it's being romanticized to sell tickets for Suicide Squad.

Ledger's death was independent from the role. Sure he did some drastic method acting shit, but the craziest thing he did was check into a hotel room and isolate himself for a few weeks, keeping an in0character journal and whatnot.
His death came from an accidental overdose from prescription medications he was using well before he had been cast as the Joker.
