Given her involvement in Lapis's past I'm going to bet Bismuth's point will be to develop Lapis in some way, and perhaps in a tragic direction.
Perhaps Bismuth feels awful about what happened, tries her best to get Lapis to forgive her, but Lapis is so hurt and angry she does something to fuck up the crystal gems and shatter Bismuth.

Still should be all square and (literally) edgy. One of the most defining traits of bismuth is that it is edginess. And making Bismuth visually different could've brought out the differences between her and the other gems: that, unlike them, Bismuth is an element.
But of course, the iPod generation gets triggered over anything even slightly pointy and non-chamfered. Hence why Prof. Utonium's new look in the PPG reboot.
