Pretty screwy legend, and I dunno if it's entirely true but...Wein did write the very first issue of Swamp Thing.
Not only that, the two have a lot of weird parallels, the swamp setting, the dealings with people trying to develop it, fire, the idea that both were men that have been transformed in a horrifying event, that they're both guardians of sorts.
It's really crazy how much the two have in common. And Wein and Gerber communicating about it might account for that.
