Yeah, this was my fav design from the original pilot. I waited a long time for the series to be greenlit and premiered just to see the designs simplified and changed. New ones has grown on me and all but I still can't get uset 100% to new Pearl. It's easy for people that never watched the pilot and the "weird" designs are these ones.

Her arms grew bigger, her hands became fat, her lips became huge and ugly, she lost her neck and her slimmer shape.
It's the same design but drawn with an ugly artstyle. And that ugly artstyle became its current model. You'll never see Poster Amethyst animated even if the storyboarders have different artstyles.

It's pretty unfortunate what happened to the art in SU.
Sugar's style is pretty deliberately ugly and it's always been, but her amazing mastery of line really sets her apart; however, SU's animation takes all of that away, leaving only the ugly.

From a graphic design perspective, the designs in SU are great. Distinct silhouettes and color palettes with TONS of room for emoting and variations on theme. Anyone who thinks they're ugly is just used to the homogenized anime Uguu style
