So many choose digital because of speed but then fall into the trap of copy/paste-ing sketchup/poser/etc models into their pages. That's the problem: no one in their right mind has a problem with people using cig/photo refs AS REFERENCE!
But you have this slippery slope starting with people like Alex Ross (who is a fine artist but sticks so close to the refs that it looks like people posing in homemade costumes which is fine for a cover (if you don't mind all the wrinkles) but awkward in interiors); then continuing on to Tony Harris (Starman, Ex Machina) who starts getting lazy and just tracing the models he's posing in every panel; then someone like Land who's not only tracing but can't even be arsed to pose models and just recycles the same refs (and often the same TRACES of the same refs); and at the bottom of the barrel you have OP's image where it's not even traced: it's 3d models rendered out with a NPR setting to give it an outline/cell shading.

He almost certainly renders out to greyscale and then does a colorfill (inside the lines) with an overlay set to Multiply (for the shading). So the grey in the hair is where he couldn't be bothered to use the Magic Lasso tool and then adjust the tolerance a bit to get all of the gray. It's just being sloppy.
