Steven Universe doesn't use violence as a main solution simply because it's not the kind of show, the writers want to pass on a message that says you should find another way and as such the stories are going to reflect that
At the same time the show says many times that it's GOOD to be prepared to fight and be fierce for what's important, what with Connie taking sword lessons and later on actually using it to save the day in the hospital episode.
