Are the new IDW Disney comics any good?
Are they mostly reprints or original material?
Also, Disney/Donaldism comic general, I guess.
Why is IDW publishing them and not the company Disney paid a lot of money to acquire recently?

Presumably because Marvel does not have the manpower or the desire to dedicate to Disney-character comics and it was cheaper and more efficient to let IDW handle the license.

Just how big are Disney comics outside of the US? In some countries, it almost sounds like they're bigger than mainstream superhero comics are here.

Looks like it's European reprints mostly, sometimes some Barks or Van Horn, that's mostly reprints too.
Whether they're good probably depends on what they're running that week, but for the most part, European comics can't hold a candle to the American ones. I was really disappointed to hear IDW had decided to just do reprints with the Disney properties, especially since they publish new stuff for most of their comic books except Popeye (that I know of).

It's mostly miscellaneous European stories from the past 50 years that have not been released in the US before and are newly translated.

Walt Disney's Comics and Stories is becoming bi-monthly so they can also release Duck Avenger. Mickey Mouse is going on a hiatus with a miniseries based on the new Disney Channel shorts taking its place.

It's cheaper and the only real fans of these comics are adults that want the European stuff anyway so it makes the most sense. The last time there was a new American made comic with the classic characters was that DuckTales comic Boom Studios put out and that was a fucking train wreck.

yes here there are scarce dc comics, no sign of marvel anywhere aside a few star wars graphic novels. disney conquers newsstands and book stores. literally every child reads some disney comic series.

Plus IDW specialises in licensed properties. Their TMNT, Transformers, Cartoon Network and GI Joe books are good. Surprised they weren't tapped for Power Rangers.
