What confuses me is that IF Pidge were trans, wouldn't that treatment be horrifiying to actual trans people? People who know your past refusing to accept how you present yourself and your identity, using pronouns that you don't want, and pressuring you to conform to your assigned gender, and the basic fact that the motivation is superficial and not years of confusion and dysphoria.
Latching on to the fantasy of thinking that Pidge is trans would be damaging to the depiction of trans people.
Granted, they could totally reverse this that Pidge was born a boy, identified as a girl, then has to live as her assigned gender to be able to get into the academy, and then then the girl reveal would be Pidge being free to present as herself again.
But that would be convoluted and too much of a stretch.
