How batshit insane was Sony's original plans for this?
>>
I'm actually just looking for that piece that says they thought they were going to make 2 billion on one film
>>
>>84374922

And that film they were so confident would make 2 billion? Tobey Maguire Spiderman vs Andrew Garfield Spiderman.
>>
>>84374993
Yeah that. Looking for that email
>>
>>84374097

And apparently they still are totally batshit.
>>
>>84375607
Jesus christ. There won't be anything of my childhood left when they're done.
>>
How can Sony's video game/technology departments be so successful yet their film department is run by literal retards and crazy people?
>>
>>84374097
As batshit insane as WB's current plans for their DC sequels and spin-offs
>>
>>84374097
They wanted to make an all women superhero team-up movie using Spider-Man characters codenamed Glass Ceiling.
>>
>>84376188
I think Sony's were actually a little crazier.
>>
>>84376136
They are giant conglomerate where the separate divisions have not much to do with each other, I guess

I imagine people working on PlayStation internals don't really talk with people working on James Bond movie
>>
>>84375781
You could just watch the first two seasons of Real Ghostbusters again.
And beat it to Janine.
>>
They legitimately thought about an Aunt May movie for a second, and entertained the idea of making it a spy movie. So you tell me, OP.
>>
>>84376279
Legit, if they could talk to Fox to a Wolverine movie with Peter parents it would make more sense

This seems ridiculously fake. Regardless of how stupid the grammar, expectations, or anything else are, the biggest issue here is that they're suggesting someone at Sony thought they could negotiate Marvel into giving them Thor.

That was a story all about how /v/ got flipped turned upsidedown now I'd like to take a minute because sit down mane, I'll tell you how it wrecked shit for games...

Longstory short, it's something that involved Zoe fucking five guys to give her game a good review, she got outed and it led to a couple of outrage regarding social justice, five guys burgers, harrassment, the divide between two chan boards' /v/idya board, a cute oc, a lot of memes regarding journalism for video games and how feminists are trying to ruin everything.

Think of it as /co/'s Spider-Woman cover controversy only extended to a year and a half with more drama outside of tumblr.

It's an old topic. /qa/ would divulge the info better.

you'd think people who have a yearly income of several hundred thousand dollars, at least, could set aside a couple days and some money to buy an anthology of the characters they're trying to adapt.

is it just me? Or does everyone else look at the shit hollywood pulls and thinks "maybe if you didn't shoehorn a romance plot into every fucking movie you make you could free up 20 minutes so the narrative doesn't feel so fucking crushed. The type of woman who wants to see a romance film is gonna go see a romance film. You're not bringing her into a action block buster by making heartthrob mc ironpecs kiss an actress."

>How can Sony's video game/technology departments be so successful

It's not even that, their computer, music players, and phones all cratered. It's LITERALLY just the marketing power of the Playstation 4 that helped them claw out from a 75% chance of bankruptcy. And even the playstation brand isn't a "sure thing" as Playstation 3 sales were completely abysmal until they dropped the price to under $300 several years later into the console's life.

The ONLY branch that has been consistently bankable has been their insurance branch.
>>
>>84383152

>>
>>84383194
The PS2 and PS1's success.
>>
>>84382114

>>
>>84383194

It was not fine.
>>
>>84382114
Didn't they end up winning in the end though and gaming has bit a little bit better than it was a few years ago because of it?
>>
>>84382130
>>84381736
I love the hyperbole and how overdramatic this pussy is when the movie somehow manages to being critically and audience received better than the last DC and X-Men movie, which is saying a lot.
>>
>>84374097

The fact that they thought an entire Spiderman Cinematic Universe was viable says something about their judgement, imo.

Aside from Spiderman, what other heroes did they have access to? Because it seemed like it wouldn't be much of a universe if all characters and movies were ultimately connected to Spiderman and took place in NYC.

"The Amazing Spiderman" was pretty good, but its sequel was disappointing.
>>
>>84383343
Still a lot of controversies in videogame regarding censorship, so there are no winners and losers in this controversy, only small tastes of victory and tears for both sides.
>>
>>84383343
not really, in terms of user friendliness consoles are in a far worse position than they ever have been. Time was you'd pop in your disk, wait a minute or so and then you could play.

Now the game needs to install, oh and update.

that can take a solid hour. Sometimes two hours or more.

I've seen PC games with less set up.

Oh how about the day 1 patches? Now you can get AAA releases that are literally broken and unplayable for 2 months until they're finally fixed.

No I don't give a fuck how nice the graphics are or how much processing power the Xbone and PS4 boast. they're gaming PCs with less functionality, anemic libraries, and borderline abusive relationships with thier user base.

Steam is only barely better and even then it's only because they have refunds.

The difference between Raimi's Spider-Man and Nolan's Batman is that Nolan intended to conclude his Dark Knight films. Raimi was going to do Spider-Man 4. And keep in mind, Spider-Man 3 was not that terrible at the box office the way ASM2 or Fant4stic or Ghost Rider 2 or whatever were. There was no real need for a reboot.

On top of that, like >>84388712 said, Avi Arad and possibly others were saying that ASM1 would take place during the Raimi trilogy.

>>
>>84392314
Venom's a famous villain and antihero in the Spiderverse. CG monster Spider-Man and symbiote that has all the power and none of the responsibility.

Marketing-wise, that shit would sell but they probably would either make Venom less horrific or adapt Flash-Venom.
>>
>>84392354
This is all true. But still, man it's disheartening to see how far Sony was willing to fuck their staff over just to set up spinoff after spinoff.

Although I guess that wasn't the weirdest part of the story, technically if it wasn't for Kim Jong Un and Seth Rogen, Spidey probably wouldn't have made it in the MCU.

It was, even when Gamergate was right (which was often) you could tell that it was basically just the same as a 4chan raid. But "serious".
>>
>>84392733
It was a more accessible raid as video games were a mainstream hobby and thus anyone against whichever views you have on the GGate topic would be met with high ounces of response butthurt and people twisting words to suit their side. It's what happened when /v/ was banned from discussing GGate because of raids and some other chan site tried to siphon disgruntled GGate followers and the rest of the site's anons unaffiliated with the Gate.

Speaking of vidya, surprised the upcoming PS4 exclusive is using something reminiscent of the Civil War costume, specifically the mask and its eyes.

Guess they really are trying to bury the ASM series down the hole.
>>
>>84392816
Oh yeah, it's in the ditch hard. I wouldn't be surprised that even if there's some swappable costumes, anything ASM would be absent while maybe a Raimi-esque suit would be in there.

I'm genuinely interested in that game though, it seems like an honest to god collaboration to not only make a proper product, but also something both rights owners can equally profit from. It's still sad that it took such a shitshow to get the situation to where it is today, but it seems like what's come out of it have been pretty good so far.

Rothman is the same guy who sewed Deadpool's mouth shut. He also greenlit Fantastic Four's reboot. How Sony is going to last under that guy, good luck.

Also, I'm surprised Amy Pascal is still attached to Homecoming. She's toxic.
>>
>>84392314
People on /co/ forget that long before Avi Arad became known as "that crazy producer guy on the Spider-Man films", he and Isaac Perlmutter ran Toy Biz back in the early 90's and the company was very tight with Marvel. In fact it was part of how those two got in control of Marvel after the bankruptcy.

Avi Arad would've noticed that Venom was a super-popular character back then (and actually still is; I've heard from some retailers that Venom back issues and merchandise sells) and certainly be pushing for including the character in the films as much as possible.

Well the easy answer is comparing Sony and Fox during the time Rothman was in charge of Fox and Pascal was in charge of Sony.
>>
Imagine being Kevin Feige in that e-mail exchange and having to be all like "damn, Amy Pascal, you fuckin' fine, all sexy with your tight body and horrific androgynous monster face. I would totally have sex with you, both for my career and for my own personal pleasure." when all he really wants to do is have Spider-Man back in the Marvel Universe. Like seriously imagine having to be Feige and not only sit in your chair while Amy Pascal flaunts her disgusting sex talk in front of you, the digital medium fully concealing her stretchmarks and leathery skin, and just sit there, call after call, hour after hour, while she perfected her sultry messages. Not only having to tolerate her monstrous fucking visage on Skype but her haughty attitude as everyone at Sony tells her she's STILL GOT IT and DAMN, AMY PASCAL RUNS A COMPANY LIKE *THAT*!? because they're not the ones who have to sit there and watch her mannish fucking gremlin face contort Spider-Man into movies so horrible you didn't even know could exist before that day in the theater. You've been producing nothing but a healthy diet of billion dollar films and critical darlings and later alleged Thor 2s for your ENTIRE CAREER coming straight out of the boonies in Boston. You've never even read anything this fucking disgusting before, and now you swear you can taste the sweat that's breaking out on her stomach as she pleases herself to your email sex talk, smugly assured that you are enjoying the opportunity to share Spider-Man with her and revel in her "operaesque" (for that is what she calls them) Spider-Man ideas, the ideas she worked so hard on with Avi Arad in the previous months. And then the Russo Brothers call for a Spider-Man update, and you know you could succeed with any comic book property in this room before Sony could put out an Amazing Spider-Man 3 but you sit there and endure it, because you're fucking Feige. You're not going to let her ruin Spider-Man forever. Just bear it. Hide your face and bear it.

The fact they wanted a cinematic universe based just of Spider-man was crazy.

Sure they could have done Venom and Black Cat stand alone films, but no way in hell would a Sinister Six movie make 2 billion.

ASM2 should be the golden example of how NOT to do a cinematic universe. 90% of that movie was pure sequel bait that will never pay off.
