Can I get some recommendations for serious adult animated movies? I just watched Watership Down, I've seen Felidae, and I'm going to watch Plague Dogs.
Don't cry till it's overbitch.

The Tragedy of Man
Saved this off /co/ some time ago, I don't guarantee for it.
>>84372256
Samson and Sally was pretty good, had pacing issues though
Ringing Bell is a kids movie, but had pretty dark shit in it that they got in trouble for.
>>84372582
>Persepolis
Is this any good? Any normie who wants to seem knowledgeable about /co/shit seems to recommend the book and/or the movie.
Also gonna rec pic related
watch this!
>>84373404
I enjoyed the movie alright. Didn't change my life or anything.
When the Wind Blows
>>84372256
Anomolisa
>>84372582
Fantastic planet made me feel uncomfortable. It was like watching a hangover.
>>84373404
It's not bad. Some people think the main character is a cunt, but that's what you get from memoirs sometimes. I'd call it a must watch/read just for the sake of its widespread popularity, but also warn people not to overhype it going in.
>>84372582
If you watch The Their and the Cobbler, make sure to go for the Recobbled version. It's more unfinished, but it doesn't have the shitty Disneyfication.
>>84374014
You put it in words perfectly.
>serious
Well, I will warn you it's a comedy, but it's still pretty good.
>>84372582
If Caroline can get into the list, then ParaNorman can pass too
>>84372582
>Fantastic Planet
>Les Maitres du Temps
>Waltz with Bashir
>Animal Farm
>Persepolis
>American Pop
>Rock and Rule
>Heavy Metal
Seconding these specifically for OP's request. The others are all also recommended, but kind of border on the line of "serious" and "for adults." Except Gandahar. I just didn't happen to like that one, but maybe you might want to try it.
The Congress.
First part of the movie is liveaction, though.
>>84372256
American Pop
The Ups and Downs of my depression(it's a comedy musical but the way it tackle depression is decent and serious.)
Mary and Max.
When the Wind Blows made me weep like a baby.Because my mom was struggling with cancer at the time and the sweet elderly couple pass away due to rad sickness
DC's animated movies are usually pretty good.
>>84373356
>Samson and Sally
I remember liking it a lot as a little kid. Was it really made for adults? I thought it was a children's film with some dark content.
I also loved the hell out of Watership Down as a kid, but later grew up to realize maybe it wasn't really quite "for" kids. The age of random home video rentals had some good times for me.
>>84374138
>>84374243
>>84374297
I've seen these too.
>>84374297
This movie fucked me up good.
>>84374376
I really enjoyed The Dark Knight Returns, and I'm planning on seeing Mask of the Phantasm. Any others?
>>84374892
The Flashpoint Paradox is pretty great and also on Netflix.
>>84372256
Watership Down was actually for kids believe it or not.
>>84374892
I remember enjoying The New Frontier and Under the Red Hood.
>>84374828
Any out of those 5 (including the two in the OP) that you particularly liked and want to see more like? Any you didn't like?
>>84375779
No I really liked them all. Anything like those I'd probably like to see more of.
Waking Life
>>84372582
The Congress is better than Waltz with Bashir, but OP shoujld watch both.
American Pop is indeed Bakshi's best, but OP should also watch Heavy Traffic, Coonskin, and Wizards.
The list is missing The Triplets of Belleville and The Ilusionist from Sylvain Chomet.
Also missing Fantastic Mr. Fox and Anomalisa.
>>84377931
Not OP but thanks for this post, man. Never heard of those but the trailers look awesome, especially The Ilusionist.
>>84377931
I think that list was made before any of those came out. The list was extended at some point and after that I started editing in some personal picks. I've been meaning to add a new row with Fantastic Mr. Fox and others. Haven't seen Anomalisa yet. It's never been a purely "adult" movie list, though.
I've heard good things about The Boy and the World, and The Prophet. Haven't gotten to watching either of them, though.
Would The Yellow Submarine count? I'm recommending it anyway it's fucking great
>>84376379
Well if you liked The Illusioniste then you should go ahead and watch Triplets of Belleville if you haven't yet.
Could anyone recommend me /Co/ stuff with a Tragic Anti Villain?
Ala, Mr Freeze

Leafy: A Hen Into the Wild
>>84372582
>>84374359
I read the comic when it was storytimed here a while back. It didn't make me cry, far worse, i felt sick and depressed the entire day after.
only online version of the animation i could find

>>84373356
They may be aimed at kids, but I think Sanrio's movies are generally surprisingly good.
>>84373404
I'd say so. Follows the graphic novel pretty closely but is a bit more depressing since it cuts out some of the SOL bits for time.
Worth watching.
R8, h8 and ber8
>>84379155
>>84372256
Could Rango count. It's a comedy so I don't know if I'd call it serious but I think it could pass as dramatic as some of the films listed here >>84372582
As for who it's aimed at, while I kids could enjoy it, I think adults might get more out of it. Or at least young adults/students.
>no rabbi's cat
The Rabbi's Cat
>>84379155
Tokyo godfathers is a great movie but isn't particularly adult. pg-13 at best.
>>84379155

Cool World is good if your looking for a raunchier version of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"
>>84378848I knew this film wasn't gonna end too well after the male duck died.I still didn't expect it to end the way it did.
>>84372503
I was looking for this but it seems impossible to find because no distributor was secured outside of Hungary.
>>84379363
God Jesus Christ, did that movie fuck me that ending leaves a scar of pain
>>84379155
What's the title in the third one on the top row And the second to last one on the second to last row?
>>84379166
>Chico & Rita
Good to know someone else watched this.
does TinTin count as a adult animated movie?
This is a real gem, seek it out if you can.
>>84379363
>>84379155
Magnetic Rose is the greatest anime ever made imo.
>>84374476
Holy shit you just revived some long dead memories. I loved that movie.
Honestly a lot of the movies on the list above were movies from my childhood.
>>84373404
I personally would recommend the books. The movie is very well made, but the books are more thorough and have a better story arc. Yeah, the protagonist is a bit of a cunt, but that's what makes it real. She was a selfish kid, a know-it-all brat rebel teenager growing up in a hostile environment both in and outside of Iran, and she definitely paid the price for her arrogance multiple times.
The author doesn't sugar-coat herself or try to portray herself any better than she was, and the honesty is part of what makes it good.
>>84372256
American Pop and Fantastic Planet are both great. Fritz the Cat is actually really funny too.
>>84372582
>cats dont dance
holy moly
I forgot all about this movie
was one of my favorites when I was a kid
>>84372482
Max is the embodiment of 4chan
>>84373404

Heaven and Earth Magic is glorious.

Added "Recobbled Cut".
Should Song Of The Sea be on there?
>>84379166
I'd hesitate to include Corpse Bride and Nightmare.
Corpse Bride falls flat in a lot of ways. Its good, but not great.
Not sure if I agree with Blood being on there. Also, 9 was great but a lot of people really hate it.
Do holiday movies count? Because I'd nominate The Snowman and the Disney version of Christmas Carol, with Jim Carey (I know a lot of people hate it, but barring that stupid chase sequence its the closest any visual adaptation has come to the book).
>>84379170
Rango should definitely be on there. Pretty great movie.
>>84374865
>>84374297
Just finished that one. It would have been better ifhe had just died in the end. The whole immortality thing is just plain stupid. The narrator is sorta annoying too. Worth a watch though.
A Short Vision. Friendly reminder this was shown to American audiences by Ed Sullivan in 1956.

Is this really the most representative screenshot of the last unicorn they could think of?
>>84393082
That's pretty powerful even now. The 1974 Hunger film, one of the earliest computer assisted animations, was by the same animator: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hY8jpD8zU4Y
>>84372582
I always see Gandahar on lists like these but I only remember that movie being laughably convoluted and far too absurd to take seriously. Should I try watching it again?
>>84392998
i disagree. The ending was what everyone wants and what everyone wants to believe will happen for themselves. As much as we see it death is still hard to grasp, so to see a character who gets the happy ending we all secretly feel like we'll get only made the absurdity of it clearer. To see a man who sees the world and does everything he could ever dream of, to live a more fulfilling life than anyone else and live long enough to see history made only makes it more obvious that we will never do anything like that. In a way it's far more sad and makes you more self aware than if he had simply died. I also think it was just from his warped perception and sense of time.
>>84379309
Ugh this movie. I loved the first half but it turned to shit later on. I just wanted a movie about a talking cat!
>>84379155
I am so glad to see "Robot Carnival" on here. That movie doesn't get a fraction of the attention it deserves. I own a 1st addition VHS along with some animation cels from it, It's really beautiful.
