with the iconic aspects of the characters that might appeal broadly to moviegoers.

You're looking at it from a performance perspective. But ladies aren't going to these movies for that. They come for the eye-candy.
He and the other big blonde 'Chris's draw in the female audience. There's almost at least one scene in every movie with one of them shirtless. Almost none of that for the females characters though. It's because men actually enjoy the characters and movies and will see them regardless of fan service.
But take away the man meat and you'll notice a significant dip in the female demographic.
I guarantee more women would rather watch shirtless Hemsworth than see a girl prettier then them representing feminism.
