It doesn't matter how many brushes you change or how many coloring techniques you try if you never bother to fix the underlying structure of the characters and learn the craft of making comics.

I feel like we have to say it every few threads just so new people don't think we're letting his shit slide.

Even if it doesn't penetrate his skull (that would mean he'd actually have to bother reading anything) maybe someone else can get some use out of it.
>>
>>84298008
Truth. The tripfag is definitely brain damaged in some regard though. Over 2 years and he draws nearly the same as he did at the start. Though I do get some schadenfreude from knowing that no matter how stupid I am, I will never be that stupid. Being so retarded that you not only can't learn, but can't process the fact that the fault is with you, is a special kind of inescapable hell. Feels good knowing that a couple years from now, he'll still be just as retarded.
>>
>>84298008
Why are people trying to convince dewd to switch his art style when it looks fine by cartoon standards??? It's the mans drawing style , fuck off and leave him be ??????

I'm sick of this meme.

Dewd is shit, and stubborn, and retarded, and oblivious, and he will never be *good* but his current work is MILES ahead of when he first started West Tree.

>>84300263
Let's see your work, Coldfusion. Oh wait - you're no better than Dewd!
>>
>>84300474
will you show me? or is it that you can't even do a porportioned figure? :^)

Because it's a huge detriment to his comic. 9 out of 10 people who see a page will go "ew, ugly" and not read it.

>>84300474
> you're no better than Dewd!
That's a bit harsh. CF's composition is miles ahead of Dewd, and he can actually draw a decent looking character on the rare occasion that he bothers to go outside of his terrible self-imposed no-detail chibi style.
>>
>>84300114
Look. Art style isn't the only thing in making comics. Did you even notice that the page I linked isn't about the art but composition?

You fucking disgust me.

You wouldn't change your tune if anon was Jean God Damn Giraud, but you still have the gall to hide behind the fallacy that spectators cannot inform artists. You're resorting to a momentary "victory" with the backup of being able to ignore them if they challenge credibility.

In short, go fuck yourself.

But you know what? I'll humor you FOR anon. This pic is something I sketched up a week or two back. It's shit, but the reason I wouldn't be pelted with constant shitposts like Dewd is that actual effort was applied.

The limbs are extended beyond normal lengths to help confirm the impression of a frog, and the hips and forearms are wide to bring balance, keeping it from looking lanky. There's consistence in three dimensional space with the exception of the eyes, which are deliberately kept simple and appealing regardless of the angle.

Dewd doesn't try to have a consistent base for his characters or understand how or why the elements of his designs exist and coordinate. That's why he gets shit.

>>
>>84301324
I think this energy would be better directed at other artists who are willing to put in the effort. There are plenty of new webcomic artists here who would benefit from such hands on advice, and seeing THEIR improvement would be more helpful for dewd. His problem is his attitude
>>
>>84301554
I'd love to do redlines/redraws/etc of anyone's work here. I just picked Dewd because his stuff is so consistently "off" in ways that could be easily fixed with some tweaks
>>
>>84301554
Does the fact that the link was directed at Dewd stop you from reading it?
>>
>>84301397
of course not, I'm not saying a casual reader can't identify bad art, in fact bad art that lacks of structure always shows off, I've never seen any attempt from any of the posters here to deliver a somewhat decent drawing, from the carrion girls to undead uneducated to miss melee to racoon girl, every comic here has mediocre art,and dewd is definitely the most hideous one but I won't bitch every thread expecting things to change because everyone should be conscious enough not to deliver shit drawings, my problem though is with everyones attitude.

Thank you for proving what I said.
Since I obliged you, now you'll ignore my art and my point because it might make you feel like you are not "winning" an internet argument.

>convenitently named as "last minute sketches"
Fun Fact: I uploaded this exact same sketch a week ago when the thread was talking about frogs. Same filename and everything.

But please, attack my character based on filenames. I'm clearly conspiring against you.

>I'm just sick the way you nonchalantly insult other's artwork without proper advice
First of all, that's bullshit.
I never insulted Dewd. I said he doesn't put in the effort to understand his own character designs and explained elements of one of my own as an example. He does not understand his character's anatomy at all, and before you insist that "YEAH HE DOES", someone who understands anatomy would not accidentally draw a character's elbow in their forearm.

Second, I didn't say a damn thing until you started acting like a cunt and told that anon some fresh bullshit. I complied and you refuse to even humor my opinion. so again, go fuck yourself.

>If he doesn't take the advide, just ignore him why even bother?

Because he actively pesters the thread by asking for advice. This is why people get annoyed.

But none of this matters. No matter what I say you will convince yourself that you and Dewd are victims. Nothing could ever possibly deter you, so this is completely pointless.

Looking for feedback and improvements as well as just general reactions to what I've got so far for this chapter - especially with the new hatchings-based shadow technique I'm trying out.

Spoiler'd images are for mild artistic nudity. Nothing's showing but they are still naked. Also, gonna fix the face in page 2 panel 2 so it's blank and push up the hairline - it'll look a little weird for the moment.

>>
>>84302038
General structure. It's like they don't have front/side/top/bottom planes even in the most general sense.

A lot of people don't use a bottom plane for who the hell knows what reason, but they cheat by only showing the face from three quarters with the viewer at the same level or above. Gunnerkrigg Court has done a lot of this if you want an example. Carrion Girls has all these interesting angles that the drawing (especially in the faces) frequently doesn't carry well yet.

A teacher with a boxier style, like Bridgman, would probably be more helpful than somebody who's all about tubes and balls and shit.

I don't think that's what that tool does. What you want is to definitely use a brush that gets narrower as you let up pressure. That way MOST of the time, you can make points without trying.
then every so often you'll have to use this technique to get your points right, if they fail (and if they're really important, like on hair and claws and such)

I had an /hyw/ crossover dream last night.

This is in the present day. The Sisters, the fat one and the skinny one whose names I don't remember, are traveling through somewhere desolate in North America. It felt to me like one of the Dakotas. Anyway, they kill a guy who they don't like, who nobody liked, for a definitely magic-related reason but it's never explained, and wind up at a boarding house where the Carrion Girls are living (it makes sense that it would be North Dakota here which has the highest population of people with direct Nordic ancestry in the USA). So they're staying there (the interior of which is my grandparent's old house) and at that point the viewpoint shifts from it's a movie to I'm the viewpoint character and somehow I'm sharing a room with them at night, them sharing one bed and me alone in a bed next to them, since I'm a light sleeper (which is true IRL) I'm awoken by them talking about their plans to leave (at some point during that convo a psychedelic experience that the fat one wasn't prepared for is mentioned (that I mention as being caused by synthetic psilocin, I was almost definitely referring to one of many synthetic psilocin analogues that are available on the designer drug market) and they use magic to make their escape, either by turning into ants or making themselves so small they ride ants to escape. I try squishing ants in the room but they get away, even though I never saw them get away. I run off to get Skalmöld, who is looking in the fridge for something, and after a profanity-laced conversation where we're both freaking out that they got away (despite not having a reason for not wanting them to escape - there was no indication that either of us knew they killed that guy) she agrees to use magic to help locate them, only we have to kill somebody who has at least 50 years of natural life left to be able to pull the spell off.

>continued in next post
>>
>>84303367
I suggest an infant but Skalmöld has a heart and suggests a 30-year old prostitute, somewhere in the conversation there I praise modern science for allowing people to live so long that even that drug-addled whore has 50 years of life left in her (edgy as fuck, I swear I'm not usually like this). [scene missing] (not that I don't remember, it literally just "cut" in the dream to later) and we find out The Sisters are in Utah and we set out to get them, then it cuts to The Sisters trekking across desolate badlands/plains where they come across a village and they're talking about killing another guy, Lowlife Louie (whose name is directly stolen from a pro wrestler) and then the dream kind of goes off the rails, segueing into other topics, and then it segues to me in bed, recounting the dream of the crossover to my dad who's writing it down and at one point he shows his progress and his progress is "Four Chapter Long Novel" and then I woke up.

Probably one of my best dreams ever, definitely top 10, maybe even top 5.

It's probably got something to do with not seeing the underside of people's heads much IRL.

There's a few places where you're using two lines where one will do. The upper line of the ears and the ear curl could all be a single line, as could the lower line of the nose and the nostril. Also the line of the hair that crosses behind the ear - draw that in as one line, certainly at the pencils stage. The lines across the hair are flat, they should follow the shape of the head more.

>>
>>84304594
>did comixology really classify your comic as 9+ ?
Following comixology's rating guidelines, I rated them at 15+, solely because a few instances of strong language was enough to tip them into that bracket.
Without the strong language, I see no reason why they wouldn't go down to 9+. Which is why I've prepped a PG version for the next time I go to print issue #1, and which will be the version to run on Tapastic.
>>
>>84305051
Yes.
>>
>>84305129
Has the Comixology people okayed it? (I don't know the process here)
I noticed that the 9+ only allowed for 1-2 depictions of
> mild realistic, bloodless violence.
Which seems like the kind of level you're usually going for when monsters or bad guys show up.
I figured it might get pushed into 12+ territory which might impact how much or how little you wanted to tone down the language, but I was banned at the time so I forgot to mention it 'till now.

>even print comics never fell into that
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comics_Code_Authority
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Rating_System
http://www.dccomics.com/ratings

I don't really see the problem with ratings so long as there's no monolithic CCA-level pressure that means some comics just can't get published.
>>
>>84305828
those last two don't exist. and yes i shouldn't have said 'never' since yeah the comics code, but yknow, we got OUT of that.
>>
>>84305368
The three current issues have been on sale on Comixology (at 15+) since December last year. I don't think I'll be changing those versions as I'd probably have to delete the current listings and resubmit them if I wanted a lower rated comic, and having two subtly different versions of the same comic would just be confusing.

>>84305611
Print comics never did it in the first place, thanks to the Comics Code Authority.

Webcomics have never done "this kind of shit", and still aren't.

If you want to sell your comics via Comixology, then you have to apply an age rating according to their guidelines. You know what else also has age ratings? Video games, movies and tv shows.

Han still shoots first, chocolate ration is still 30 grams, and your childhood is not ruined.

If you mean the sketchy lines for the backgrounds and the coat, then yes. All intentional. For the backgrounds it makes the bright colors in the foreground pop while making the background appear darker. The same concept is used for the jacket, but to make the hair stick out more. Ok Ok, here it is, http://freakanimes.info/westtree/

There are a few nude parts around chapters 7, 8, and 10.
>>
Ok, so here's my problem. The protagonist is a fairly inexperienced person (I have reworked this character to death to have them represent the reader, having them and the reader learn about the world around them at the same pace)

This protagonist has a mentor, albeit closer to their age than a normal mentor should be, but the mentor will generally represent where the protagonist wishes to be (and as the mentor itself grows, so does the protagonists goals)

Now, as the story goes on, there are challenges, naturally. Usually in the form of antagonists and other times in the form of goals becoming increasingly harder to pass. What my problem is, it is that as the story progresses, the challenges get harder, but some of the challenges I have put before the protagonist, neither the protagonist, nor the mentor, nor the mentor's mentor has completed. I find it difficult to stretch the expectation that the protagonist can realistically meet the goals and thus I have antagonists yet to be defeated and challenges incomplete. As much as I like the idea of moving forward through failure, I do not want to make it a theme.
>>
>>84316077
you dont have a mentor just so you can ask a guy who's been there
you ask him how he's handled situations like this in the past, where suddenly it's a problem he's NEVER faced before, and wtf should he do
>>
>>84316077
If you don't want to let your protagonist fail that much, find out a way to let them win. Let your protagonist use their strengths to work their way out of the problem. Your character's inexperienced, but maybe they're got the determination to power through and win in the end, shounen style.
What's the plot/setting of your story? I could probably say something more insightful knowing that.
>>
>>84316180
Its not that I let the protagonist constantly fail, its that I cannot help but continue to place the goalpost further down until it becomes unrealistic to achieve that goal.
>>
>>84316272
move it more slowly, ya dingus!
>>
>>84316272
If you're going to keep moving the goalpost, you gotta let your character learn and grow too. With every adventure your character's gonna get a little tougher and more experienced. If they aren't tough enough by the end, do what Dragonball Z did and throw some scenes of the characters training. Just what is your protagonist's end goal(s)?
>>

Mentors usually haven't completed every task their apprentice will be up against, they just give them advice and support to complete them. Morpheus had never defeated the machines and saved humanity but without his help Neo wouldn't of been able to do so. The mentor doesn't need to know EVERYTHING, just a lot more than who they're teaching. There could be failure that leads to success later on or the main character could accomplish a smaller task that helps him get in the mindset to accomplish a larger one a la Karate Kid. There's many options.

It would really help to know more specifics though.

you're describing bleach's soul society arc
>>
>>84316077
also this sounds like every other anime "EVIL GROUP WE MUST DEFEAT"-arc, as I said bleach does this a lot, as well as hitman reborn, as well as saint seiya
>>
>>84316419
Growth is the general goal, that as long as there is more potential to be realized, then it shall be realized.

The mentor in question, while only a year older than the protagonist, is considered by most to be a prodigy, but believes the protagonist will one-day surpass them and the mentor is motivated to prove that while growing themself.

>>84316455
Bleach is a little bit inspiring to me, but nothing overt.
>>
>>84316547
no disrespect friend but this is bleach's soul society arc
ichigo=apprentice and protagonist with several enemies and failures
soul captains or whatever=enemies, each one stronger than the last
urahara=young mentor, a prodigy that knows ichigo will be better than him
aizen=the impossible force he knows no matter how hard he tries he won't be able to defeat (at least that season)
>>
>>84316547
That's the issue, you're tying to write an endless shounen. Your character should have a concrete goal, like "find the Dragonballs" or "become a super hero" or "defeat a gay vampire," and then let your character grow so that they can reach the concrete goal. If your character's only goal is to "grow" your story is going to be an aimless mess.
So tell me, what are the concrete goals of your character?
>>
>>84316541
I want to say that its not, but those were the kind of things that inspired me to make someting in the first place.

>>84316636

Oversimplifications, but I see your point

>>84316649

Its not endless, I have a concrete ending. As far as the goals for the protagonist, its about finding the full extent of their potential, and how they fit into an ever stranger world. I have oversimplified everything about my project
>>
>>84316636
>he thinks bleach invented the most basic adventure story of history
>>
>>84316832
I'm not saying it invented it though, as I said before there were more shounens that did that, I just happen to know that one really well
the point is that anon is making yet ANOTHER shonen with somewhat generic story
>>
>>84316895

Generic in the sense that it has a protagonist,a goal, and an occasional antagonist.
>>
>>84316895
yeah good point.
i think the real issue is the lack of context. these shounen anime are channeling ancient epic tales that intentionally span on ludicrously long, and stringing the audience along as far as possible. if that's what you wanna do with your comic, fine. there's a way to do it. you just need to move those damn goalposts SLOWLY. dwell for a while in each stage. think about it like a video game. you don't get an upgrade and then immediately finish the level before you can use it, then get another one at the beginning of the next one.
>>
>>84316953
I plan these out to be fairly short arcs, and 3 places i could easily end the story if i chose not to continue. Currently trying to limit the first arc to 12, 45 - 50 page chapters, using western comic structure as a template with self-contained goals yet still be part of a larger story. If people like it, ill make more. Otherwise I'll have no problem walking away with that ending
>>
>>84317019
what's the setting?
>>
>>84317140
Semi urban area, not suburban, but not a NY style setting either.

In a world where Mages are the Scientists and Engineers, you sir are the magic equivalent of the IT guy

who what? is this the premise of a comic? because i like that. pretty sure i've never seen a comic about a magical repairman

>I find it difficult to stretch the expectation that the protagonist can realistically meet the goals and thus I have antagonists yet to be defeated and challenges incomplete.

If the challenges they protagonists encounter get progressively harder, should the characters then not be more experienced with each Adventure? (This goes for both the protag and the mentor). Hell, a "mentor"'s role is fiction is more often than not to die and pass on the torch to the hero who'll eventually surpass them.
Alternatively, not every battle has to be won with brawn; if the protagonist can outsmart the physically stronger antagonist and ruin their plan, it's still a victory for the main character.

How did you come up with the name of your main character?

i have managed to find a fitting name for all my characters except for the main guy and a girl that was very important him

for some reason the puns i come up with aren't working as well as they worked with other characters

i think i just have to come up with 2 names that sound innocent but strong at the same time and that have a nice ring when you say them together
>>
>>84316077
Well, one of the things I've learned in regards to fights is this: every fight needs to fit into the plot (duh) but also every fight revolves around weakness and disadvantage, rather than strength. To get good tension in a fight your character needs to overcome these weaknesses and disadvantages in order to pull out a win. Now, making that satisfying is the hard part.

But this does mean that if you have a plot that somehow revolves around fights you can start tailoring your solutions to your character's experience level. At the beginning he wins through sheer luck perhaps, but then later he starts using his environment more, he starts using the techniques his mentor is teaching him.

The purpose of a one sided fight is to show off a character's capacities. But for the purposes of building tension, the audience needs to know your characters' weaknesses more than they need to know what theyre ultimately capable of. Its a balancing act, but you can definitely mess around with it over time.
>>
>>84318491
what are those names
btw top tier patrician names are: tom, obby, nathan, gustavo
>>
>>84318491
i either use straight up nouns or i put syllables that sound good together
>>
>>84318491
Once while I was really tired someone shouted "mildew!" and for a second I wondered "who's Mildew?" I realized the word sounded kind of like a feminine name, and decided to just name my MC that because it fitted her demeanor.
>>
>>84318549
why don't you make the protagonist a fat tactician? that way is more interesting to see how he wins instead of being a ripped fighter that uses brute force
>>
>>84318746
this is a fun concept.

the MC of my comic is relatively weak compared to the honchos that he faces, so basically he uses underhanded tactics to win his fights. this is done through lying, misdirections, and faking injuries. it's a blast to write compared to the head-on brute fighter archetype.
>>
>>84318746
i wrote about the fights but im not >>8436077 but you do pretty much prove my point about a fight needing tension and being more interesting when there is tension. a fat tactitian has to rely on different moves and strategies than the standard shonen protag, and the way they think their way through their problems would be interesting to see, provided you dont repeat the same strategy over and over. The fat tactitian's weaknesses are more interesting story-wise than a buff fighter's physical strengths
>>
>>84318491
friend of mine came up with it, she used it in our roleplay games back in the old days.
what kind of setting is this? we can help
>>
>>84318491
I was trying to think of an eastern/foreign sounding game that still sounded like 'death'.
'Shi' is death in Japanese so I think I built on that subconsciously.

Ultimately, her name became 'Voshim' after I tried a few combinations because I liked that one best; it felt vaguely feminine, sounded good when whispered, and sounded right when matched with this ancient mythical goddess of death.
>>
>>84318491
I usually put meanings in my character's name, you can do this at http://www.behindthename.com/ and just filter to search for meanings and you'll get a good amount of stuff depending on what you're looking for. Sometimes I only take inspiration from this and change it into fantasy names
>>
>>84318491
i just think of really dumb puns and go with that. my protag is a sheep-human kid named Shepard. The fat and sweet character is named Brioche. There's a shark man named Jaques C. the villain is Valerie Halla. Puns are amazing.
>>
>>84318491
sometimes the act of rejecting a suggestion can tune you in to what you DO want (ask yourself why this suggestion is wrong, then what would fulfill that)
innocent and strong names that sound good together, for a dude and a lady? Armand and Tanya
>>
>>84318491
I give my characters people names because they are people. No puns. No secret meanings. Just names people have.
>>
>>84319446
those are hard to remember.
>>
>>84318491
I used a theme naming from birds since I was writing short stories involving bird symbolism

yeah it's pretty cringy
>>
>>84319719
the thing with birds, and doubly so with plants, is there's so goddamn many of them and they're named after the most obscure bullshit, that you can basically name anything after a plant or a boid.
i recently found out ALL the characters in pokemon are named after plants. even the ones with other, more obvious theme names. they're also plants. fire guy? fire plant. mist girl? mist plant. plant girl? plant plant

Would you?

Nah, I can't go around hugging children that aren't my own. The pedo witch hunts are pretty strong around here.

The character is around 15-ish... not really a young young child buy yeah, there's that.
