What does /co/ think of judge dredd?

Is the price of justice really freedom?
>>

It's excellent and I'd really like to delve deep into it and more of 2000AD in general, but I'm reading One Piece and watching Mazinger and they've got me by the balls.

I love it to bits. Easily my favorite ongoing comic. I just ordered a hundred bucks worth of TPBs.
Justice should never come at the price of freedom, or else it becomes hollow. The judges' claim to power is to ensure the survival of the human race and civilization in the face of total destruction, but their idea of survival is a cold, empty, hollow endeavor. From cradle to resyk, the average cit's life is as heartbreaking as it is pointless, and except for a slight minority of cases, is really no life at all.
>>
>>84289791
I think the recent movie was dog shit, the recent comics have strayed too far from their roots and have become less interesting as a result but the classics are gold.
>>

Judge Anon, I'm first poster. I'd like to read as much Judge Dredd as I can, and general 2000AD stuff too. What's a good way to go about doing this?

Also you're a great contributor. Please never stop.
>>

Read the case files you stupid faggot.

Judge Dredd is the best example of the powers of serialized storytelling in the west

Case Files are the best place to start. The first few volumes can be a bit cheesy, but they're tons of fun and if you're aiming for completionism you can't go wrong with them.
As for other general 2000AD stuff, you can either find a list of classic stories and see which one sounds cool, or you can try:
- Nemesis the Warlock
- Strontium Dog
- Rogue Trooper
- The Ballad of Halo Jones
- ABC Warriors
- Slaine
And for more modern stuff, check out Nikolai Dante, Shakara, Kingdom and The Order.

Is Judge Dredd a Mary Stu?

I don't think he's ever got his ass kicked
>>
>>84290663
He once lost his job as a Judge and became a janitor.
>>
>>84290663
Confirmed for never reading Dredd

>>84290525
Generally shorthand used for Americas and Europe to avoid saying All Comics because I don't believe Dredd holds up to all examples out there.
>>
>>84290663
He's had his share of beatdowns and hopeless fights. From a purely physical standpoint you have Stan Lee, Armon Gill, Bachmann in Trifecta, Trapper Hag, etc. Intellectual-wise, PJ Maybe fooled him for the better part of a decade and the Sovs all but annihilated his city right under his nose and he was unable to stop it. And then you have things like the Sisters of Death, the spectral forms of the Dark Judges, the Mutant, Satan, all enemies that Dredd plain can't touch and has to either fight through proxy or ask Anderson for help.
But above all, the main thing that keeps Dredd from becoming a Gary Stu is that John Wagner, his co-creator, makes sure to remind people that he's still a bastard in the service of an oppressive form of government that can and will lock you up for looking weird, and while a lot of it is played for laughs, none of it is glorified as the way things should be.
>>
>>84290790
Wagner is a senile old shit who forgot that Dredd use to contain satire, which it no longer does.

There is a point at which your Satire becomes too on point and you just end up telling the facts of the day with a Science Fiction twist.

And you want to laugh but can't because that is what the world has become.
>>
>>84290995
So its better to remove all sense of satire at the cost of an interesting story just to keep the reader pacified to the current political climate? Fuck off. A decent writer can do both, but decent writers aren't what they hire anymore.

I decided to read all things Dredd from the beginning. I go through a Case Files each month, having started in January, so I just started CF7.

It's pretty dated, I have to say, and most of it (some exceptions) is quite cheesy.

It tries too hard to be funny (old timey British humor at that). I guess it was for kids. Does it ever become more like the 2012 movie, tonally?

No offense to fans of classic Dredd, there's nothing wrong with it, it's just not what I'm into and not what I was expecting. To be fair, pic related made me laugh.

Far as tone goes, it starts going into more down to Earth, gritty police procedural stuff after The Pit, which is 1995-1996.
I'd also recommend reading the Origins -> Tour of Duty -> Day of Chaos sequence of stories, which are both very modern books and a great way to catch you up to speed with current Dredd so you can hop into the actual weekly progs.
And if you haven't yet, make sure to read America and the Democracy storylines.

I was lisening to a podcast interview with longtime Dredd writer John Wagner where he said he always made a deliberate effort to write Dredd as neither to heroic or villainous. In fact with each stip's script he would write in the notes that this was either a "Dredd as Hero" or "Dredd as Villein" and he tried to do even numbers on both.
>>
>>84291307
Well the first nine are the North American versions, the rest are the U.K. versions. I got impatient and wanted to read more Dredd so i said fuck it and decided to get the remaining case files
>>
>>84290617
because we like the movie. And Urban was a good Dredd.
>>
>>84291396
Well I don't, because he looked like someone put a helmet on a pug.
He was a shit Dredd and it was a shit movie and as that is a comic book recommendation image it doesn't fucking belong.
>>
>>84291247
I don't agree that it is dated especially 5 but if you are not feeling it then you aren't feeling it I am not sure if that early stuff is for you.
>>
>>84290546
There was this one story i remember, where Dredd and a team of sidekicks basically do a police procedural, and I remember it being a pretty nice breath of fresh air from the standard satire/facism/IAMTHELAW/apocalypses and shit like that. It was just Dredd being detective Dredd. And that was nice.

what was that?
>>
>>84291361
Ah man, I didn't mean it like that. I'd just rather see a publisher I like have my money. I wouldn't mind torrenting it all, but that's not a profit for 2000AD. That isn't so bad, is it? That said, I won't bother you.
>>

There's actually a bunch of stories like that.
If it's the one where Dredd is sent to a shithole sector to deal with a bunch of reprobates, fuckups and weirdoes, it's The Pit.
If it involves Judge Beeny and mutants, then odds are it's Empathically Evil.
Truth is, most Wagner Dredd stories nowadays have a lot of procedural to them, so if you grab one, it'll probably have that feel.
>>
What I have found is that I like Dredd but not enough of what surrounds him in 2000AD and the stuff I do like in that magazine is so fleeting that it is never worth the price for digital or the crazy prices for print, which is a shame.

and yet it's recommending the comic book sequel to the movie.

Although granted that was basically just comic dredd with the movie outfit. Not really Urban's face.

whatever floats your boat, but I liked it, and Wagner liked it too, for what thats worth

May favorite judge was Rico. Is there anything new about him? I know he was killed off a while ago, but has he made another appearance?
>>
>>84291536
>and yet it's recommending the comic book sequel to the movie.
Which is still a comic book and not a fucking movie.
And as I've said before, Wagner is a senile old fuck who's been writing the same comic book for several decades. He's not going to say an ill word toward his meal ticket.
>>
>>84291437
yeah 5 wasn't bad at all, but then I hit 6 and it was full of mostly retarded shit like obese people competing to be the fattest and people getting surgery to become the ugliest.

If you're talking original Dredd's Brother Rico, he had an e-novel about him and showed up in those animated Judge Death shorts, but he hasn't been in the comics since the Origins/Mutants in MC-1 flashbacks.
As for Rico II he's still very much alive and kicking, and is currently co-starring in the current Dredd serial by Michael Carroll.
>>
>>84291620
>no death sentences

I don't have any issue in being very selective with the 2000AD I pick up, Dredd is no exception to that.
>>
>>84291685
I meant his brother yeah, that fucking line,"he ain't heavy, he's my brother." Hit me so fucking hard. Rico is such a cool character. He added depth to Dredd, too.

Yeah, Rico is still very much dead. Pat Mills did an expanded remake of his story, painting him as less of a complete unredeemable psycho, but that was back in the 90s.
I've heard good things about the novel, The Righteous Man, but I haven't read it yet.

>>84291706
While there's only one crime with an outright death sentence in MC-1 (collaboration with the enemy during wartime) judges can and are encouraged to shoot to kill during gunfights, and in cases of crimes against humanity they are empowered to just gun people down if they see fit.
It's a part of what makes Dredd such a good judge: he has a really good arrest-to-kill ratio.

>>84291769
Jimping means Judge Impersonating, as in dressing up as a judge. Cheeking is trying to play a joke on a judge, or making jokey/sarcastic comments to them. I can't quite remember what Sharking was, though.
>>
>>84291824
Yeah, but I'd like to see that be a thing. It'd be interesting to see their different interpretations of the law conflict with each other. Robocop sees the law as a means to protect the innocent, but Dredd seems like he wants to use the law to maintain order.

Are you guys talking about Body Sharking? I was pretty sure that was when you took out a loan or other favor using someone's physical body in stasis as the down payment. If you fail to pay it back, the persons' body is kept and they get used for other things.

I'm probably getting that wrong. Is there another general "sharking"?

Dredd was actually a HUGE critic of the Mechanismo robot judges program, to the point where he actually broke the law to sabotage it. To his credit, they were pretty faulty, but it shows that the last thing Dredd wants is for robots to judge humans. As much as he values the level of detachment and dehumanization necessary to become a judge, he also firmly believes that judges need to have a human sense of justice rather than just mindlessly parrot the law. It's a rather modern development of his character, but it's become a key part of his own personal vision for the city after Origins.

>>84291881
What's really interesting about a Robocop/Dredd crossover to me is that Murphy is a robot struggling to keep his humanity, while Dredd is a man who struggles to hide his humanity. There's a lot of room to contrast and compare there, I think.

He's not much of one but if Spiderman could do something by thinking about uncle Ben/great power/someone counting on him then Dredd can do it because duty.
