he 2016 Harvey Awards Nominees have been announced with the release of the final ballot representing the input of the voters, presented by the Executive Committees of the Harvey Awards and the Baltimore Comic-Con. Named in honor of the late Harvey Kurtzman, one of the industry's most innovative talents, the Harvey Awards recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art. They will be presented September 3, 2016 in Baltimore, MD, in conjunction with the Baltimore Comic-Con.

The Harvey Awards may be voted on exclusively by Comic-Book creators, those who write, draw, ink, color, letter, design, edit, or are otherwise professionally involved in the creative aspect of comics, online or in print. The Harvey Awards are the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals. Thank you to all that have already participated by submitting a nomination ballot. Final ballots are due to the Harvey Awards by Monday, August 8, 2016. Full submission instructions can be found on the final ballot.

Voting is open to anyone professionally involved in a creative capacity within the comics field. Final ballots are available at www.harveyawards.org. Those who prefer paper ballots may e-mail [email protected].

This will be the eleventh year for the Harvey Awards in Baltimore, MD. Look for more details soon as to how you can attend the Harvey Awards dinner.

This year's Baltimore Comic-Con will be held September 2-4, 2016. The ceremony and banquet for the 2016 Harvey Awards will be held Saturday night, September 3rd.

/co/ will like this
>>
>>84274833
I like Valiant, but all these nominations for them ae complete bullshit. Especially in the best single issue category.
>>
>>84274853
Yeah, it feels weird. Is Valiant really that good? I mean, I read some of them and I'm gonna be honest they didn't really catch my attention much, they're pretty much still just capeshit, except smaller. Also, is IDW just not a regular contender for these? Shame since I like most of their stuff
>>
>>84274833
Comic book awards are shit, and just popularity awards.

>>84274804
As much as I like Ms Marvel, it's not award worthy, and then there's the unreadable squirrel girl nominated.

>>84274776
>Nominating King's weakest series just because it's Marvel.
>>
>>84274897
Anyone from the comic industry can nominate, so it's more likely that Valiant staff give more fucks for Harvey award than other publishers.
>>
BLOODSHOT REBORN popping up all over the place.
I've never seen anything about it on /co/ or heard anything about it from anyone.
Am I missing something?
>>
>>84274804
It's surprising to see Valiant nominated for so much. That is one horrid list of continuing or limited series nominees though. Southern Bastards is the only one I'd give it to. Bitch Planet is a contender for worst comic of the year and I don't have anything against DeConnick.
>>
>>84274942
ah yeah, I think I remember a smaller scale example on how nearly everyone on the Valiant Forums cooperate to always vote Valiant whenever a website hosts a poll that features a Valiant Title/Employee.
>>
>>84274814
This

Valiant is fine but it's not THAT good, it's like half the nominees in this thing

Good to see Battle Pug nominated.

It's a decent comic but nothing amazing or anything. Definitely not worthy of the nom. Maybe if it had tighter pacing and was less decompressed

>BLOODSHOT REBORN

Come the fuck on, it can't be that good. Nothing I've read from Valiant is anything above mediocre at best. I know they're a good company to work for but this stinks of shit

I'm glad ISLAND is at least getting the recognition it deserves.

Outside of that most of the main votes are fucking awful and the same shit you always see getting nominated. Like seriously, why are Staples and Vaughn even in this anymore? Staples is seriously overrated to begin with

Valiant pay THE best rates across the board out of any mainstream publishers at the moment, so it's not surprising that people are doing favours for them now.

>Best new talent

Holy fuck well spotted. That is a bit of a joke

Every year I'm reminded why no one gives a shit about the Harveys. I don't know where the flaw is in their voting process but they're even worse than the Eisners.

Do fans vote on these? Because Valiantfags definitely rig fan voted awards.
>>
>>84276535
No it's just professionals in the industry

BOOM also got a lot of votes, but they are putting out some great younger audience's material so I'll give em that
>>
>>84276433
>Now, you may be surprised who came out on top. You may be, but I’m not. As someone who has spoken to Valiant creators and the Valiant team, it has become clear that (a) creators enjoy their experience at Valiant and (b) Valiant believes creators do better work when they are well compensated. Crazy idea, right? The numbers back it up as Valiant had more artists rate them as a 5 than anything else. In fact, they weren’t rated any lower than a 4. That’s impressive, and as a publisher it’s clear they value artists, especially in relation to their peers.

MAKE CAPESHIT GREAT AGAIN!
>>
Their best writer list looks like a joke.
>>
>>84274804
>>84274788
I would really like to see Mike Del Mundo win best cover artist and Chris Samnee win best artist.
>>
>>84276535
>DC's nominations are all on Batman titles and are artistic

>>84276716
This
>>
>>84274814

This year's nominees list is a joke. Even more so than usual. On the bright side, at least the Harvey people didn't nominate a veteran comics creator for "Most Promising New Talent" the way they did last year, when Jen Van Meter (an Eisner-nominated creator with about 15 years in the industry) somehow landed on the Most Promising New Talent ballot for her work on a Valiant miniseries. I'm not going to suggest that Valiant PR is paying off the Harveys, but the recent record just looks suspicious to me.
>>
>>84277678
>This year's major comic book awards are a joke.
ftfy
>>
Valiant deserves to play a little dirty.
I mean, they are loved by fans AND by the creators (they are paying more than DC).
>>
As shit as it was, I can confidently say that the /co/ awards were still better than this or the Eisners.
>>
>>84277953
>As shit as it was, I can confidently say that the /co/ awards were still better
No, they weren't. Awards shows were a mistake.
>>
>>84277716
True.

The irony of all this is that all these wonky nominee lists that seem to be motivated by industry politics and glad-handing instead of creative merit erode what little critical relevance the Eisners and the Harveys have left.

I mean, these bullshit awards can't even fulfill the very basic function of being "popularity awards," as I think it's a stretch to say that a company with less than 1% of the direct market share (Valiant) qualifies as anything close to being popular.
>>
>>84274804
>>84274762
>John Allison not nominated for web comics, only the spin off he doesn't draw.

I mean yeah, there's been an overabundance of Winters Sisters in Bar Machinery lately, but still.
>>
>>84274742
Pretty shit. I thought Sammy Harkham would be in there somewhere, his Crickets Blood of the Virgin arc is killing it. Just fantastic cartooning on every level and a brilliant story.
Also the last Houghton Mifflin America's Best Comics was really good, usually I've either read or own at least half of the stuff in there, this one actually introduced me to cartoonists I'd never heard of and was fucking bleeding edge to fuck.
>>
too much valiant
but it's still better than the eisner nominees
