Greg, Steven, and Pearl go to Empire City for some reason and run into Marty. There's a lot of evidence that the episode where they're wearing the tuxedos takes place there, like how you can see skyscrapers through the windows when Steven slides into the pool. Marty mentioned heading to Empire City in Story for Steven, and Greg saying that Marty's dead to him doesn't make me think that they're going there to see him intentionally.

I recently tried to start watching it, because I love weeb crap, and I can't stand talking to AT fans anymore. I watched the first 3 episodes. I hate Steven. They bend over backwards to make him relevant to resolving every conflict, but never commit to going full wacky. Also, all the girls seem to be playing boke. I expected nose girl to play tsukkomi at first, but she didn't. And the black girl's character is written especially awkwardly. Do these problems ever clear up, or should I just not watch this show?

Definitely gets better, in early episodes I was annoyed that these powerful beings needed the useless fuck ups help at every situation.
As the show goes on though Steven winds up helping the gems in other ways that actually feel like they make sense, like dealing with emotions and such. Plus the extremely tiresome "Steven can't be right because he is a child" scenes with the gems pretty much disappear completely.
I don't think its the best show ever and I know that there are a lot of people who won't enjoy it, but I personally love the show.

Pretty much everyone agrees that the first handful of episodes are bad, but Steven's at his absolute worst there. Around episode 8 is where things get better, and episode 12 is a major turning point. Most people recommend watching up to 25/26 before passing full judgement, but 12 changes most people's minds.
Also, Steven improves a ton. At the current point in the show he's one of the best characters.

The monsters they are actually other gems that have been "corrupted" though that really hasn't been explored at all.
The three main gems are the survivors of a rebellion with their homeworld. The red eye in the first (second?) episode was a homeworld construct looking for signs of life. Later homeworld sends more gems down to investigate.
Homeworld was doing creepy nazi experiments turning the corpses of other gems in the rebellion into scary monsters and plans on creating a gem the size of the earth out of a big old corpse orgy. Sadly we don't really get to see it form, and likely never will, but it was still cool.
The main point of the show is peace and love so nobody is probably going to die and instead all the villains and home world gems will probably end up redeemed. They already got 2 new crystal gems.
Lots of shit. All the while characters are continuing to develop and get less annoying. Unfortunately 80% of that is season 2.
