How popular are Western cartoons in Japan?

Are they as popular as anime is in the West?
>>
I don't know if it's true or not but I heard MLP failed pretty hard in Japan.
>>
>>84271200

Disney cartoons, film or TV, are pretty popular in Japan as a general rule.

I remember when a Japanese woman was going to leave her husband for not liking Frozen.

There's also a fair bit of fan stuff (doujin, fan art, fan fiction) for the other Disney tv cartoons like SvtFoE and WOY to a lesser extent but I also saw a lot for Steven Universe (no surprise I guess, it's heavily influenced by anime) and Adventure Time. There's also a lot of fan merchandise for these shows.

Cartoons have a niche fanbase. South Park, Regular Show and the like get subbed.

(Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series also gets subbed.)

How many of you actually were here in 2010/2011 when MLP started.
Not very many judging from how badly history seems to have distorted itself.

Suffice to say there was never any problems with /mlpg/ the first and only legitimate /co/ mlp general thread there ever was. All problems were either caused by outside spammers (/b/tards) or butthurt shitposters who couldn't deal with the fact that the new MLP show was actually good or that adult men watched it.

What did 4chan get out of it at the end of the day? An arbitrary global rule, a useless new board, /trash/ becoming /co/ 2.0 and a ton of butthurt on all sides. Totally worth it.

I speak a bit of the moonrunes and when I was practicing back in the day, made a friend who livestreamed herself drawing on NicoNico. We would talk in Japanese text via Skype. She really liked a lot of western cartoons growing up and was especially fond of Foster's Home. Most Cartoon Network stuff gets dubbed there, if I remember. There's Japanese Adventure Time, EE&E, PPG, SU, and I'm sure there's a bit more. Some of the episodes are up for free on the Japanese CN youtube channel.

I don't know exactly how popular they are. I would hazard a guess that they aren't as popular there, in general, as anime is here. Maybe Disney stuff like Frozen is, but I don't think there's as many Western cartoon Westaboos running around glorious nippon as there are animu weebs in the Occident.
>>
>>84271292
MLP is the American equivalent of moe, so ofcourse it failed in Japan. Another cute girly show is just a drop in the barrel over there. The Otaku have Idolm@ster and Precure, what do they care about MLP?
>>
>>84272783
What made /co/ less fun was the surge of "I don't like it hence it doesn't belong on /co/" and general threads, both arguably do to MLP legitimately triggering people because before FiM MLP had always been worse than sonic when it came to creepy and autistic fandoms. Scrolling to the first page of MLP porn on paheal is a good way to travel back in time to what was typical of the time.

This coupled with the general anti-furry sentiment that was still a thing back then caused a massive backslash and for lack of a better word empowered the shitposters who used MLP to get a rise out of people. This culminated in the site wide ban on MLP of march 2011 that only helped to stir the already overbubbling cauldron of shit. After 3 days of word filters and "you-know-what" threads the mods stopped the auto-banning on the terms that there can only ever be one thread on /co/ about MLP (MLPG) at any given time and that ponies are only allowed in it and on /b/. This lasted until moot created /mlp/ when /mlpg/ was violently cast into an ocean of piss, where it still is.

>>
>>84272870
Aside from Disney/Pixar movies and such, it seems Western animation is insignificant there.

>>84272924
MLP doesn't have cute girls in it, it has ponies. Otaku couldn't care less about animal characters, and animal characters are uncommon in general in anime. Even if it had anthropomorphic ponies instead, it wouldn't make any difference. It's not made in a way that would interest otaku, and there's a reason why moe emerged in Japan and practically doesn't exist in America.

Lilo & Stitch was a big one that was bigger in Japan than in the States leading to the Stitch anime.

A long time ago I read that Western superhero movies did notoriously poorly in Japan. The theory was sentai and magical girls were much preferred. In spite of this, some manga and anime creators were and are huge Western superhero fans and put it in their work.

I don't know if the tendency of superhero movies to bomb at the box office there has changed.

Last Airbender got canned early into Book 2.

It recently got picked back up on Netflix Japan and they've dubbed the rest of the series. Got most of the original actors back with only a few replacements (Zuko and Iroh and Toph).

No word on Korra.

Netflix Japan seems to be saving a lot of American cartoons that got cancelled early in Japan. My Little Pony hasn't been revived, but I think the Equestria Girls movies being dubbed was like a test to see if there was still enough interest. So maybe.

Among 'mainstream' normie adults here, it's Disney/Pixar and some Dreamworks shit (Minions stuff is still everywhere.
This is among your more run of mill non otaku Japanese adult, who says they dislike Anime but happily admit to loving Disney.
They also love Marvel capeshit.
Next up is character goods characters, those shitt characters made to make products, like Hello Kitty and Rilakuma.

In fact most of the adults and later teens I teach really don't like Anime at all, and think my Anime-fan British co-worker weird because she talks about it a lot.

Its got a fandom over there, with its own ponycon, Japanese pony fursuiters, fanartists, etc.

Underground cult classic, i'd say.

Plus, it failed its broadcast because they only played it once a week, tuesday moarnings after the kids already left for school. Thats even referenced in the Watamote manga.

This.

And that carried on into Trigger too. Watch Kill la kill and how cartooney some of its segments and art got. And from what I understand, that new show they are working on will be cartooney as well.

Also, Yoh Yoshinari drew a bunch of MLP fanart, and snuck a twilight doll into Little Witch Academia, as well as other western cartoon references.

All the fansubbed episodes of MLP also got taken from Nico, which is leading some Japanese fans to speculate that the show might be coming back (possibly via Netflix).

Hardly a confirmation, but it means that some rights holder in Japan doesn't want the fansubs of season 3-6 to be an option for Japanese fans.

America didn't even get a fucking volume.

They adore pretty much anything Disney. Aside from Frozen, both Wreck it Ralph and Zootopia did very well there. Zootopia especially.

They also enjoy most very popular western cartoons like spongebob, gravity falls, and to a lesser extent adventure time. Haven't seen much on Steven Universe though. Older CN cartoons like My Life as a Teenage Robot or Dexter's Lab are seen as the equivalent of us being into Cyborg 009 or something.

They also like 'indie' stuff too. I know this isn't a cartoon, but there is a pretty sizable fandom for Undertale there that has been growing since the fan translation came out. FNAF has a small following but it didn't catch on as well as Undertale did.

Pretty Cure is basically the magical girl equivalent to Super Sentai or Kamen Rider.

Thing is that the toku shows could get away with super colorful costumes because they had lighting to help keep the designs from being eye bleeding. Pretty Cure is animated so it is a lot more in-your-face with the color.

Oh, and mind control and shit like that apparently happens a LOT in Pretty Cure.
