No, spongebob's only real competition at the time was Rugrats and Invader Zim (the latter was cancelled in favor of spongebob dude to Jhonen spending the budget all on cgi.).

It was cancelled due to encouraging active thought in children and credit away from rugrats and all of its various ugly fucking spin offs. They didn't want kids realizing that there are better cartoons out there so they created so much red tape to strangle Vasquez out with frustration.

You know what I also miss? The cartoon city. it was just 10 second clips of the characters interacting with each other in between shows, but it made the characters seem more real when I was a kid.

I will never forget this shit, it was so mother fucking comfy to me. I loved the bumps with the nice blue kind of city scapes and flickering street lamps and then seeing the characters interacting, the hosts of Cartoon Cartoon Fridays werent even that bad.
