I liked both periods.
Early seasons where it was literally just 5 kids who had an inexplicably huge tree house and the later seasons that got into the larger organization and lore.
Though admittedly it doesn't make much sense why that one sector had numbahs 1-5 when everyone else had randomly assigned numbers.
Also I didn't like how in later seasons they were always reporting to the moonbase and never just did missions from their tree house anymore.

At first they were doing a Tom & Jerry/Cow and Chicken thing where you never see the parents faces but they gave up on that pretty quick. The Tuba episode you don't see Montys face for the first half of the episode until #1 yells at him and it pans up to his devastated face. Pretty effective.
I think they gave up doing that with everyone else's parents because it became to hard to frame entire episodes that way. The murder mystery dinner table episode?
I think the only parents who's faces remained unseen for the whole series were #5s parents.
I think Fairly Odd Parents did the same thing for the first few episodes too.

The whole 274 defection plot was when the show really started to gain some gravity and get fucking deep. It was a great progression of story from then on.
Probably the only show that balanced episodic vs arc/lore episodes well. Comedy was top notch and no one was over emotion/annoying. I really want to give it a 10 but I know there's something bad i've repressed about it.

My god it still holds up incredibly well. Hell, there's a lot of stuff that just flew over my head. I am shocked that more people don't acknoledge KND as one of the earlier shows to have lore based stories and stuff. I mean, something like Z.E.R.O. couldn't have worked as well as it did in another time unless it had faith in it's fanbase

Yes and no, I'd say the lore is, in potential, greater than Gravity Falls, but it felt like it was holding itself back. The show had plenty of treehouses, 2x4 tech, villains, in-universe history and worldbuilding, but those things were largely treated as one-off elements for an episode. And that's the problem, the show insisted on being a silly episodic series the whole way through (OK, there was the splinter cell in the last season). I can't really blame it, either, the alternative would most likely end up too self-serious, as much as I'd like to see a season-long arc about KND internal political drama or kid-adult geopolitics.
Gravity Falls managed more just because it had something of an ongoing plot, even if it didn't quite delve into some elements (and I don't blame it, there's no way they could have gone into the weird shit without fucking up the pacing and possibly the weird shit itself).
Why did GKND fall in on itself anyway? Just not enough hype?

But that also applies to Gravity Falls. KND had just as much of serious lore building episodes as much as GF had the same. Also KND was episodic from the start but grew into it's lore over time while GF gave us the idea that this was going to be story based from the beginning but did not completely deliver
