Comics have been like this since the 60s, it's just that you're now only old enough to actually understand it. Read the original She-Hulk comics, it repeatedly falls over itself trying to show that Jen is very intelligent, as good as the guys, independent, strong woman, etc. Jean Grey makes similarly clunky comments in the original X-Men comics ("I'll show those boys that nowadays women are every bit as capable as the men!!!") I guess partly it's also 'cause it just sounds quaint by modern standards rather than desperately SJW.
Generally, creative industries are more left-leaning, and things aimed at younger people are more left-leaning. The overall culture of the 60s when many of these series started was one of acceptance, love, peace, equality, all that stuff. All these things were forged in just about the most SJW furnace you could get.

Yes, comics have always been more liberal-leaning in nature, but liberal progressivism, especially in the last few years, has gone beyond the idea of pure equality to an aggressive denigration of things that are white, male and straight (generally under the rationale that it's "their turn" to be treated as second-class citizens) as well as a strengthening of the emphasis on labels and cultural and ethnic differences as opposed to a lessening.

I just say that it can be read as a satire of American politics.
Which is kind of a problem. If you look at a 300' monster painted in the flag and say "that's totally something we'd do", then you are dangerously close to being past a caricature of yourself.
