No.The exam is basically a drawn out tournament arc to weed out the unworthy, those who "pass" are then given training to unlock Nen, the mastery of which is required to be a Hunter. After the exam the series basically follows Gon and Killua as they gradually master all the various aspects of Nen and perfect their abilities. They remain students who gradually improve throughout the bulk of the series, most of the enemies they face are far, far stronger than them because they are still learning.

HxH is basically Togashi putting his actual emotions into the manga. He has no assistance and prefers to work alone no matter how much stress it gives him. This reflects on his manga greatly. As you can see early HxH is all simple, happy, fun loving themes meaning Togashi was very happy and in a good mood at one point but as you watch/read the later parts you'll notice the theme is slowly getting a bit darker and darker until all that fun goes away. You aren't watching/reading a manga/anime for fun, you are literally watching/reading a stressed out man breaking down as he writes a comic for young teens.

Eh, it's so absurd at times that it works. It's definitely the most philosophical of the arcs, and it takes the subtle messages about political and economic corruption and features it without letting it dominating the major plotline. I love stories that end with no one really satisfied with the outcome and no clear good or bad guy side.
