Am I really looking at CG here? This still image looks a bit like 2D. I got the feeling at points in the trailer that it looked different from most CG. What'd they do different?

The entire movie has a very handcrafted look. If you look closely all the environments look like they're made with felt, everything is a bit fuzzy. The yellow worm snake thing that's chasing the girl at one point looks like crochet. Everything is basically arts and crafts. I really like it.
Now lets hope the writing has as much effort put into it, because pretty visuals can't save a shitty movie.

Looks great visually, same thing can't be said of the writing (yet) or the music.
The teaser was so bad that the trailer looks a lot better as a result.
Depending on the writing it may be better then we expect. The gag where he tosses the guitar into the fire could suggest that the entire movie is him just raining on her parade.
