It's funny because in season 1 Bryke said that most of the characters from the original series were dead and that they were going to focus on the new ones. In the first two seasons we saw only Katara and Zuko, and only briefly. Then in season 3 (maybe realizing the new characters were boring and unlikable) Toph's daughter got shoehorned in and in season 4 Toph made a number of (awkward, contrived) appearances. I bet we would've seen an elderly Sokka too if he wasn't explicitly said to be dead.

Is it ever touched upon that the Avatar is basically Hao/Zeke from Shaman King, a mystic of great strength who managed to conquer death in a way and is using knowledge and power accumulated over many lifetimes to essentially toy with the realm of mortals in any way he deems fit? Why would they be the only one able to talk to spirits? Spirit world traveling isn't exclusive to the Avatar and honeslty it's all about understanding the spirits which Aang didn't at first, certainly seems like something anyone could learn given time.
If we include LoK regular people talk to spirits frequently so it really isn't an issue.
And that's not even including the "fate" thing of that kind of legends. Which would imply the Avatar is actually incapable of just doing their own thing and ignoring their charge.
