>tfw it's a D&D episode
>>
>>84180848
These episodes are boring since none of the players do anything terrible that gives you a look at what kind of person they truly are.
>>
>>84180848
Have they ever made a good D&D episode? In any show?

>>
>>84180935
Not /co/ but Community's D&D episodes are pretty good.
>>
>>84181014
That episode didn't make any sense to me
>That guy only made one character and used it for every game he played in
>DM's somehow approve this while other players are level 1
>DM rolls for everything, players just say what they want to do and DM determines based on his own rolls
>>
>>84180935
That from Dexter was actually fun and what made my want to play it.

>>84181013
It feels like someone tried to play but wasn't capable of finishing their character sheet. The worst part is that the episode is basically filler, I was expecting way more from one extradimensional shenanigan.
>>
>>84180935
The episode where Finn and Flame Princess explore dungeon is all based on D&D, with Finn as the DM.

Didn't feel like the writers played for the most part. Not D&D but South Park's World of Warcraft ep, it really felt either like they played or good research.
>>
>>84181013
trash of the highest caliber

it completly missed the point of D&D, so much so that the writers had to come up with the most contrieved and forced of "conflicts" to come out of dipper wanting to play the game. it singlehandedly managed to drive me away from the show

it didnt understood the most basic thing about dungeons and dragons, the put it as this thing where imagination rules and you can do and be anything but the fun of the game is precisely in the opposite, in the constraints that force you to be clever and problem solve, also in being part of a story.
>>
>>84181013
it was more of a comment on the d20 system and math/probobility in general. Neat, but it limited the audience even more.
>>
>>84181013
you could tell they had no idea what they were doing by the emphasis they were putting on the board and miniature aspect of the game.
right in the picture they show the game coming in a box like is fucking monopoly or some shit

I've always felt slighted. They focused on the numerical aspect as something that is inflexible. At best, they were good players with a shitty, vindictive GM, at worst it was a petty jab at 'them nerds o'er there!'

What's the name of this one animation, where these two guys that hated each other find a map, and go on an adventure for the treasure, slowly becoming friends during the course of time?

Subject. Verb. Object. It's not hard.

And more than ever. Between social media making it easier to find people who also like to play and online shopping making accessibility a non-issue, games like D&D, Settlers of Catan, and Warhammer 40k are in a golden age right now. And I

That was very common in the early days of D&D, when it was less about an overarching story and more like a series of modules to be beaten. People had characters that they transferred between games. Sure, feels a bit dated, but remember they're playing 2nd edition for some reason.

1. online
2. play a rules-lite game

Unless you're dyscalculic, you shouldn't have problems playing any RPG. The most complicated RPGs are like that not because of difficult calculations, but because they have a million tiny little interlocking rules systems or features that you have to keep track off (HERO, Rolemaster, GURPS...) Steer clear of those and you'll be fine.

Actually, according to the creator his major inspiration and feel for Yugi Oh was fucking HELLSING.

If you look carefully you can even notice the influence on the art style. He wanted to do a brutal horror comic about the King of the Games being a super powered evil side, that slowly becomes a good guy.

The idea was to have him playing always different games on each new arc, but them the card games became too famous and profitable, all the manga had to revolve around it and be kidified for the mainstream audiences.

it feels really weird reading the old yugioh stories. yugi behaves like a tool most of the time, gets bullied for it and then he becomes this super cool awesome dude who gets revenge in an overly edgy way. And the girl loves him.
Maybe it's just me, but it feels like the writer is compensating for his own childhood where he got bullied. The villains for example are written in such an unnecessary evil way that they feel more like straw men than legit characters.

Feels bad, but at the same time it's easy to see which people are actually cool if they can try out dnd without being an autist.

>GM rolls for everything, players just say what they want to do

That's actually how the game wad originally meant to be played, and was played back in 1rst edition. The players roll for everything convention came about since most GM's couldn't be bothered to memorize or write down everyones character sheet, so it was easier to have each player do their own rolls.

While it may be hard to trust in a GM to that extent, I would absolutely recommend playing a game with that kind of convention, it's actually pretty cool. It keep secret perception checks secret, keeps failed knowledge roll results secret, and really makes metagaming near impossible.

My biggest problem is probably the normies that come in thanks to big bang theory and just make Rick and Morty jokes the entire game like a sperg lord

I thought it was just OK. The "cheap plastic case" for the infinity-sided die is an alright one-liner joke, but it was way too stupid to be a plot device.

Lack of party cohesion is the worst.
>be bow ranger
>druid positions himself, and necromancer positions undead, in line of fire all the time
>druid casts storms almost every battle
>-8 to ranged attack rolls all combat every combat
>go into melee to try and do something
>get aoe'd by other party members

For the people in this thread who want to play a role playing game but have no group to do it with, just go to your local game store I guarantee they have something similar to a beginners night. Or check online for a convention near you, lots of times at a convention the people playing haven't played that specific game before so you would fit right in. If anyone happens to be in western Washington there is a small convention called Go Play Northwest that is geared towards people playing boardgames and role playing games for the first time.

I'd say after season 3, it fell apart for me. Didn't help that they booted the original show runner, and fucked it up even more to what felt like a completely different show. Didn't Dan Harmon came back, but he was all disenchanted, and shit?

>>84183150
If you read up on Chevy Chase, he's super difficult to work with, and in this case, the was oppose to Pierce being shit, since it is know that he would often ad-lib his characters to make them better.

Also, nice thread. I don't know much about D&D, or ever played it, but reading people get hype over it, always makes me hype over it.

>>84195561
Season 5 was actually pretty good. They booted him again for season 6, which was worse then season 4.

but is not just a few autistic details that they got wrong, they missed the fundamental core of what the game is even about, i dont think is too autistic to be bothered by that

Well, we're talking about knowing someone on the internet, their steam avatar is an anime grill, and we both know we go to /d/ so it's pretty fine.

So I guess lost all shame.

Break them in with a simple superhero RPG. Everyone has imagined themselves with some super powers at least a few times in their life.

Once they get over their "RPGs are for nerds", you can then move on to D&D or whatever else you enjoy running or playing.

Actually, player rolling for obvious stuff they would know about (ie, combat to hit roll) was done to keep the players interested.

Remember, originally D&D had a "caller" who had to tell the DM what each party member would do. This meant the players had to tell the "caller", who would then tell the DM. This controlled the general team talking at once going on, and made sure that only "official" actions the caller approved of would be actually done.

That is boring as hell.

GM rolling for secret rolls like perception checks and other things? That's been the way since about forever. Core part of 2nd Edition for sure, and mentioned in some of the 1st edition supplements IIRC.

Not a D&D episode, but as a D&D scene, season one of Venture Brothers has a pretty good one. It's a flashback to Rusty in college. The DM is a nerd obsessed with a girl named Leslie Cohen, and builds a bunch of shit into the campaign around her. Encountered with a "Leslie Golem", Rusty refuses to fight her, and instead does a charisma roll to seduce her. He succeeds, which pisses off the DM.

Seems remarkably similar to situations I've been in. DM forces some personal shit onto the group, the group refuses to play along, pisses off DM.

Never played the game, but is this specific type >>84193247 of DM, really that common?
>>
>>84183128
He does, it's just that Community has something of continuity. Or at least, it did, I stopped watching after the shitfest of Season 4.

>>84186749
You got ripped off. Should've just gotten S1.
>>
>>84201373
I'm not sure how common it might be compared to the other kinds of DMs, but i've seen plenty.

Usually more can keep a lid on it and you might never be able to tell what their fetish is until you've played multiple games with them which each have a female centaur NPC.
There's also the autist types where you'll be able to tell instantly, they're less common probably.
>>
>>84201373
Not in the exact way in manifests in VB, but to some degree? Yeah, in my experience.

DM gets obsessed with Dragon Age: Origins, new campaign is built around an obvious rip-off of The Fade, and an NPC exactly like Zevran.

DM reads a bunch of Anne Rice books and half-way into a running campaign, it becomes all about vampires abruptly. DM tries to finish campaign as fast as possible to convince everyone to play Vampire: The Masquerade.

DM gets into zombies, zombie hordes everywhere. DM gets into anime, decides to have a "beach episode" in the campaign. DM obsessed with puzzles and shit, forces everyone to go through some elaborate puzzle lock bullshit, angry when he forgets that the fire mage can just melt through the lock. Etc.

DMs making campaigns or individual sessions all about the media they're currently consuming is a problem I've had with numerous different DMs.

Motorcity.
>>
>>84202712
But yeah, that was more larping then straight-up D&D.

The overall writing, at worst, was flimsy and repetitive, but the visuals/designs were 10/10, and it even showed promise at the end with the plot.
