I think it's just because it's an outlier line from what one would expect from Peter in a movie where he is otherwise pretty consistent.
I think they should've played that bit to Peter's nerdiness by having him go "Do you guys remember how they took down the AT-ATs in Hoth in Empire Strikes Back?" and if they want to bring his age into it, Rhodey's line should be like "Was your DAD even alive when that movie came out?"
And if they wanted to go full hokey "I don't like talking about my dad" in a somber tone.
