I'm not saying that the movie would have failed if the plot was totally original, but this is all part of Disneys current plan for the franchise. They needed a new starting point for people to jump into and a definitive movie for most of the recent Extended Canon stuff to branch off of.
To be honest, of course I would have preferred if they didn't copy A New Hope. I would have loved to see something a bit more original. That doesn't mean its a bad movie though. They did it for a reason and there is no point in complaining about it when the next dozen star wars movies will be totally original.

Well there is a ton of Prequel stuff in everything, including references in TFA (clone troopers, balancing the Force, etc), so it hardly seems like it.
If Pablo hasn't lied before that the Prequels are equally loved in the US and even MORE loved overseas then they really have no financial reason to limit them, though I will admit due to the very vocal, frankly memetic hatred of the Prequels they surely do worry about potential negative reactions from reviews. That said, I don't think they were worried at all that a few pod racer flags would make people storm out of the theater and they even filmed some political scenes with Leia's aide who died on Hosnian Prime, and there is no indication that was cut due to worry about how people would respond to politics but to make room for...probably more rathtar antics, frankly.

I don't thin Dice was OT only so much as cheap. Oh sure they were shelling out for the ultra pretty landscapes but we've seen how they've limited customization, number of planets, cut out space battles entirely. Basically they knew they had to have the OT since heading into the Sequels I really think there WAS a push by Lucasfilm to move the the OT as a jumping point to the Sequels since it was easier to jump there than start all the way in the Prequel era. They were also going to have the Battle of Jakku which was very briefly after the OT.

She was at the capital to beg support for Leia's cause. It's why she was even there. They didn't just pick random people from a crowd shot and make up a backstory like, "That's Senator Boo-Boo Mundingo with his Sash of Saltiness and this is Leia's chief of staff and this is Freek Crumbo, notorious bounty hunter..."
From the details we have from the script, in it's various iterations, they'd planned to have her try to garner support and only to have the Chancellor turn her down. They weren't unsympathetic but it was to show that the NR didn't feel the First Order was a threat, and then of course the sky goes all red. No clue if there were full senate scenes, which I doubt, but scenes that would have brought the movie in-line with the political situation described in the Visual Dictionary (written by Pablo himself) and the other background material.

We know scenes were planned and that's why she was even there. The movie ultimately leaves all of those characters contextless, which it could be argued spoils a good deal of the emotional impact of what happened on Hosnian Prime.
You're off on tangent from the original post which was about these things that were planned. We know they were cut regardless of whether they were filmed or not, and that would be on the director. If you're truly interested in any cut scenes I suggest you try your friendly neighborhood google to see what you can dig up.

They were. A few people saw the OT through bootlegs and such, but by and large China didn't know shit about Star Wars for a long time. The prequels were the first SW movies to see official release there.
The funny thing is that when TFA was released, it didn't exactly bomb but it underperformed (and China's profits not meeting expectation is usually cited as one of the biggest reasons why TFA didn't manage to pass Titanic worldwide) and a large part of it was that TFA's heavy appeal to nostalgia fell flat. They didn't grow up with Han and Stormtroopers and the Millennium Falcon, so they didn't get excited to see them again. A lot of Chinese movie critics called it "more of the same" because it was a pretty basic sci-fi action movie to them. Ironically, China had become more familiar with the slew of movies that Star Wars ended up inspiring, but as a whole they didn't know much about what had inspired them, so without that context, a new Star Wars movie that didn't resemble the previous Star Wars movies they were used to was somewhat baffling and in some cases off-putting.

It's more of an Asian thing, I think. East Asian storytelling is steeped in sociopolitical melodrama inspired by their own turbulent history, which is why you see a -lot- of period pieces. Not to mention they're all for Hong Kong style fight choreography and stage combat. All of which the Prequels have in spades, what with literally being a period piece within the Star Wars saga compared to the Orginials which were much more straightforward as a space adventure.

So let's speculate. What happens now after TFA?
The galactic senate is destroyed (although it doesn't seem like they were doing much anyway), so I imagine the New Republic is in chaos and a lot of systems are just shutting themselves off from others. But I can't imagine the First Order is doing any better since they just lost a huge part of their army and infrastructure from Starkiller going kablooey. So does the Resistance try to rally the worlds of the New Republic to their cause? Does this kick off a massive "recruitment drive" between the two factions for system support?

I guess the NR will finally go to war now that the FO destroyed their capital planet and killed most of their leaders.
There will be chaos and a power vacuum because no faction is powerful or confident enough to keep the galaxy in order. The FO lost SKB, but Snoke didn't seem to care at all, so I guess they still have enough ressources and a plan to take over and rebuild the Empire.
But the Republic should still be the larger faction for now. I assume that Snoke will command Kylo to kill Leia to weaken the Republic (and the Skywalker lineage) even more.

So I'm watching The Freemaker Adventures, finally. It's surprisingly competently made. Incredibly entertaining, and despite it being a LEGO production, I can definitely see it working within the canon despite a couple minor misgivings (the Kyber Saber, for one). If it just kept major movie characters and locations to a bare, necessary minimum, it'd be perfect.

Naare is fun, but Kordi and the rest of the Freemakers are pretty generic protagonist characters. He actually hates being evil and his conscience is constantly telling him to stop fucking killing people, and to just go back to his family and the light. He's basically a caricature of Star Wars diehards. Like them, he is a lonely, unpleasant young white man who grew up at odds with his parents, obsessed over the paraphernalia of movies that came out before he was born. While every other major new character in the movies is just bumbling around with their own problems, Kylo is obsessed with the story of Star Wars and longs to take his place in its legend. Abrams' Star Trek movies had a similar message which essentially identified old fans with the villains, trusting that the new fans wouldn't care and the old fans would see the movie anyway just because they have to.
The movie is all about costly failures of machismo; the only male character who is broadly portrayed in a positive light (Finn) is also a weak buffoon. Much as Kylo represents the obsessive superfan who hates the movie but goes to see it anyway because it is Star Wars, the focus of his existence, Finn represents the average Tom, Dick, or Jamarcus on the street who just goes to see Star Wars because it is the cool thing to do right now. Meanwhile Rey represents Abrams' vision of the future of the fanbase, a little girl (she is almost completely desexualized and infantile, innocent figure for a female lead (hence /tv/'s obsession with her as a sex object)) whose dreams of Star Wars must take a back seat to her real life problems.
This is also why Rey is ridiculously competent at everything she does despite never training at any of it. It's because her actions are meant to represent the kind of arbitrary imaginative play-pretend way you thought of Star Wars as a kid - you're flying the ships, you're moving things with your mind, you're fighting the evil mask guy with the red sword, you're not thinking about how incongruous that kind of fantasizing is with the world the movie portrays. Kylo's problem is he's past 30 and still loves Star Wars.

Kylo can penetrate other peoples minds, so it's safe to assume that Snoke can do the same and possibly much more.
My personal theory is that Snoke did penetrate Kylo's mind when he was still a toddler. He gave him nightmares, told him to do horrible things and taught him about the glorious Empire and his grandfather who was "killed" by Luke.
People are assuming that Leia and Han knew Snoke personally, but what if he was just a "monster" who invaded Ben's dreams and made him do bad things like in some horror movie? Ben would be scarred for his entire life. He would tell his parents about this monster and they would send him to Luke so he can cure Ben Solo. Ben would get the impression that his parents wanted to get rid of him and Snoke would exploit that.
Even if I'm completely wrong, there are many ways to write a convincing backstory for Kylo Ren.
