The Red Lotus weren't threatening enough to deserve a character doing a big death speech considering Mako could solo them all plus Tenzin was doing just fine.

Asami is by far the most boring character.
The fact that they were starting to bond on this season would make her death have an impact, which would be finally something useful for her to do for the story.
Loved TLA, never watched Korra. I think if that fox died there'd be some real character development about taking thing for granted, and I probably would've cried my eyes out. Then again, I'm a total sucker for animals and anything sad with them makes me bawl.

At the end of the series he doesn't have much prospects besides his shitty cop job in that corrupt city.
His brother is a war hero/mover star/sole lavabender, his two also famous ex-gfs are now lesbians, his charge as a bodyguard brings in democracy in the EK.

Asami, she was nice enough that her death would be sad but in the long run wouldn't really cost anyone anything (her role in the Krew is literally to just drive them around). Only real difference her death would make is that Korra probably wouldn't end the series with a girlfriend, which really speaks to how poor of a character Asami is.

Bolin was a little bit of a manchild. Getting a wake up call would have been good for him.
Mako should have died but not season 3. He should have died killing the giant mech at the end of season 4. Would have been a great last stand kinda moment for him.
