Costumes and heroes in comics go hand in hand, right? A hero's costume is an integral part of that character.
I like the Symbiote because the idea of a costume actually being this tar-alien that slowly parasitizes you and twists you to the point where it's the one wearing you is weird and cool to me.
I don't really like where Marvel's gone with them since then (naming them, having them not actually supposed to do that, etc..), but this is something Marvel does a lot with things I like, where they expand on things that don't really need it and it makes the result feel sillier or weaker. Like, you don't need a whole goddamn rainbow of hulks. Just make him big, angry, and throw in the whole "I just want people to leave me alone" thing.
Venom: Space Knight is awesome though. I didn't think I'd like it, but a few issues in and it's literally Venom cruising around space saving sexy alien babes and shit. And if you can't enjoy a premise like that, you need your fun-o-meter examined.

I don't mind what they did too much such as soon as I read the klyntar thing I immediately noticed a satisfying headcanon is space knight's developments have done nothing to contradict it, and even reinforce it in some places.
symbiotes in large numbers seem to err towards violently enforced groupthink since most offspring inherit the tendencies and mental contamination of their parent. venom got imprisoned for going against his 'clan's groupthink, being a mutant who failed to inherit anything, instead being born tabula rasa. it wanted true symbiosis rather than aggressive parasitism. it got mentally contaminated from Peter, then Eddie, then Mac, then Flash. three of them violent moralfags of varying degrees, one just a violent psycho that went insane due to psychic attack,
in come the klyntar, their groupthink is hard moralfaggotry. as we saw in the recent issues, they violently purge any members of the clan that go against that groupthink.
so my headcanon is that A) they didn't 'cleanse' Venom, they just overwhelmed it with their own groupthink via mental contamination,
and B) they aren't the 'true' symbiote homeworld. that's just part of their groupthink, and nearly every symbiote colony in the universe violently enforces the dogma that they represent the 'true' nature of symbiote-kind. even they way they psychically communicate 'missions from the cosmos' to their agents harkens back to the psychic scream Venom used to call for a nearby clan in Planet of the Symbiotes when it and Eddie were having a spat. and for a while after encountering this clan, Venom readily adopted their groupthink, but shook it off a while later and went back to 'normal'. Same as what happened in Space Knight

A couple reasons for me personally.
I loved old Venom. One of my favorite characters. Ever since I was a kid I always loved the symbiote.
I also hated when Gargan got the symbiote. I had to deal with him as Venom for years. Those shitty pupils he had.
I also love when bad guys try to become good guys. That's why I love the Thunderbolts.
And then there's the delicious irony of it all. Flash Thompson, Peter's old bully/friend and Spider-man's biggest fan gets attached to one of his biggest enemies? That's just great.
And then the struggle he has to control it and then trying to convince himself that he doesn't want it. And then the symbiote learns to actual like him.
It's just so great. Plus, I love the design, even if it is just tacticool stuff. As long as he goes back to an OG Venom style when he gets mad.
And Eddie was amazing as Antivenom. So I was fine with him not being Venom.

I absolutely LOVED Venom and Symbiotes as a kid. I stopped reading everything Symbiote after both the Venom:Chill series ended with the protagonist locked in an FF4 dome naked and Toxin's original run was just dropped.
Is it worth going back through everything I missed? Is it worth starting now? All I know is Flash was Venom for a long time for some reason, Mania is a teenage girl, and Marvel stole Tau designs from Games Workshop.

Yes, definitely read everything Carnage related for sure. I didn't read most of Minimum Carnage so I can't reall speak on that, but I guess Superior Carnage was alright. The Annual is where Cletus and Carnage merge completly and it's pretty good.
