That was kind of the point. It's why the final boss is killed off screen as the punchline to a set up years earlier. The main characters never develop at all. There was an entire arc about just that.
Of course, you're not obligated to like this, but the point was always the pointlessness of it all.

I'm not inclined to tell you. But I'll have you know it earns that scene with world building and by developing relationships between it's characters. The girl in white is child soldier in a military organization using powerful tools to combat interdimensional terrorists which do the same. Their stylish technology makes use of the human brain to compute ways to marshal the forces at the command of the actuators in their tools, and they call it magic. It is marginally less silly that Star Trek if you want to get down to it.
