Why not just have Peter marry Mary Jane, oversee/work in Parker Industries (Superior Spiderman storyline), and eventually retire a few years later?
Then he could act as a mentor figure for Miles?

Why would he even want to edit? Editing and writing used to be intertwined, and people crossed over from one to the other or, like Stan Lee, did both jobs at once (to get two paychecks).
But now hardly any editors write and vice versa. Indie writers are de facto editors of their own books sometimes but at Marvel and DC there's almost strict separation between the jobs. Which means any new editors will be promoted from the editorial pool.

I'll get called a troll and a contrarian but guess what, it's something that needed to be done. Because those who enjoyed the marriage(waifufags and people in their 40s) were vastly outnumbered by those who enjoyed a young, more free spirited Peter. Not to mention that the two really were too young to marry them without aging the characters.
Marvel did what they had to, albeit their execution was bad(can't argue with that).

Plus in Miguel's case he won't exist for another 80 years and won't become Spider-Man until the 2110s.

I enjoyed Spider-Man more after OMD but I still hate OMD because it needlessly clouded the question of whether the past stories "really" happened the way we read them. Plus of course it was a stupid story based on a terrible premise (Aunt May should have been dead years ago, everybody's reaction to OMD was "let the old bat die already").
If they had just divorced them or even killed MJ people would have been mad but there wouldn't be the same intense bitterness. The message of OMD was "if you liked the last two decades of Spider-Man stories, they didn't exactly count."
