>Elena of Avalor is an upcoming animated spin-off series of the Disney Junior animated show, Sofia the First, that will premiere July 22, 2016.

>Disneyphiles know all about Mulan, an Asian warrior, and Tiana, an African-American entrepreneur. They are even familiar with Ariel, the former mermaid. But they have never had a Latina character among the company’s roster of “Princess” characters, which also includes Aurora, Cinderella and Snow White. When Elena arrives, the company will have a character that could cultivate broader appeal among a consumer niche that is growing rapidly in the United States. Disney Channel will in the fall air a special TV movie titled “Elena and the Secret of Avalor,” which explains how Elena was imprisoned for decades in a magical amulet and eventually set free by Princess Sofia of Enchancia – the title character of Disney’s popular “Sofia The First” series.

http://variety.com/2016/tv/news/disney-elena-of-avalor-princess-1201792152/

Thoughts? Looks like they're going for an older audience than Sofia the first, which is why it's airing on Disney and not Disney Jr. Could be fun.
>>
these tv only princesses are bullshit

Besides Sofia the First, is there any others?
>>
>“Elena” stories are expected to incorporate influences from Latin and Hispanic cultures through architecture, traditions, food and customs. Magic, mythology, folklore and music also play an important role, with each episode featuring original songs spanning an array of Latin musical styles including mariachi, Latin pop, salsa, banda and Chilean hip hop. The show’s theme song is performed by Gaby Moreno, a Latin Grammy Award winner for Best New Artist, and Elena’s anthem, “My Time,” is performed by Aimee Carrero, who will also give voice to the main character.

I look forward to how seeing they distill all these different influences into some sort of Disneyfied, homogenous spic culture.

To be really honest, most Sofia episodes felt like torture because of the dumb stories. Peppa Pig was a much more enjoyable show, surprisingly, when I was babysitting.

>Princess Elena's journey began long ago when her parents and kingdom were taken from her by the evil sorceress, Shuriki. Elena bravely faced the sorceress to protect her little sister, Princess Isabel, and grandparents but in the process, her magical amulet pulled her inside its enchanted jewel, saving her life but imprisoning her at the same time. Decades later, Princess Sofia of Enchancia discovers the truth about the amulet she has worn since joining her royal family and sets out to restore Elena to her human form and help her return to the Kingdom of Avalor.

How fucking broken is this thing? Is it an infinity gem?
>>

My point is, this is just Americans wanking themselves. All attempts at "Diversity" are. Tiana is African-American. not African, and Moana is Hawaiian, which in practice makes her American as well.

I guess it says a lot of the "Diversity" meme that has been so in vogue in the US in the past few years.

Neither of the or the movie in general resemble how the Incas actual looked like. The sad part is that the conceptar actualy nail the actual Incan culture pretty good.
>>
>>84095488
On key aspect to understand Hispanic American Culture is that there is a significant hole on the identity of said culture, the America was a diverse group of nations and empires with difference language before the conquistador came.

During the Spanish conquest that lasted decades there was a clear and methodic effort to erase said culture from the native population. Partially in an attempt to "civilize the savage" but also as a tool to maintain control over the people. Language were outlaw and replace with spanish most of the natives where evicted from their land a relocated in spanish settlements where they where converted to cristianity, given a new name a put on the service of an europan lord, general or priest.

Even after all that time the few stories, and traditions that survive are hold dearly to the Latin-american population. Showing a need to see said stories on their own pop culture.

Elena of avalor doesn´t show the real history or culture of latin-america its just a cynic attempt to cash in on the latin population, by making the same disney princess template with a pseudo mexican color swap to sell some dolls.

>Originally, the Day of the Dead as such was not celebrated in northern Mexico, where it was unknown until the 20th century because its indigenous people had different traditions. The people and the church rejected it as a day related to syncretizing pagan elements with Catholic Christianity. They held the traditional 'All Saints' Day' in the same way as other Christians in the world. There was limited Mesoamerican influence in this region, and relatively few indigenous inhabitants from the regions of Southern Mexico, where the holiday was celebrated. In the early 21st century in northern Mexico, Día de Muertos is observed because the Mexican government made it a national holiday based on educational policies from the 1960s; it has introduced this holiday as a unifying national tradition based on indigenous traditions.

>Northen Mexico
You know what is considered northern Mexico to begin with? It's the states on the border with USA, they always had a different culture because it mostly Spaniards and later Mennonites settled there, only a few native groups live on the north and they don't go out of the mountain range.

Dia de muertos has always been celebrated in the south aka where most of the population of Mexico is, people around here also worship the death reaper but you don't see that acknowledged by the government as a official religion do you?

The government did that because those states are too close to America and do not want them to become a door for more Americanism invading this country.

>"B-B-BUT MUH DIVERSITY! MUH LATINOS!!"
Latinos in the US are to the rest of Latin America what Chicanos are to Mexicans.

Perhaps what puts me off "Diversity" the most is how in the end it's just Americans trying to force their brand of Social Justice on the rest of the world. Their liberals know they can't quite cash in on their usual discourses when in third world countries, so they now attempt to work them over before they can take over population and infrastructure there.
>>
>>84106303
>The government did that because those states are too close to America and do not want them to become a door for more Americanism invading this country.

The Mexican revolution was the establishment of an anti-Catholic, Freemason government supported by the US under the pretext of "liberating" Mexico from Spain.

With Americanism I mean, American pop culture, there are retards on the north wanting to celebrate thanks giving and Halloween, introducing english words to the daily life.

Basically the (central) government is protecting our culture so American culture doesn't spread from the north since the north share little with the south culturally but are kinda influential for being the biggest states in the country.

A lot of us have nieces, nephews, or even kids of our own. You kind of get used to seeing the shows after awhile.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is garbage. It doesn't even have easter eggs or shoutouts to old stuff.
Jake and the Neverland Pirates is "good." It's not cringe-y to watch but nothing spectacular.
Sofia the First is the girl equivalent of Jake and the Neverland Pirates.
Don't give a shit about the others.

They also play Disney movies sometimes, usually on Sundays. It was cool to see A Goofy Movie on TV, I think Disneys starting to embrace it again (since Max is appearing at Disneyland again).

Sofia is an incredibly common name for Latina girls. Yes, spelled with an "f."

>>84090963
That's not what they said. They said Sofia's mother is from a place called Galdiz, a made-up land that's supposed to have Latin influences. Sofia isn't Hispanic or Latin American because those things don't exist in her fantasy land.

Though I'm kind of curious why Elena gets a pass on that concept when she's from the made-up land of Avalor and the two series are connected.

And since ti's clearly European-looking, the land is going to have to be based on Spain. Unless Disney wants to create a canon where colonialism exists.

Which I wouldn't mind, honestly. But obviously the Mouse is never going to do something as ballsy as that.

I like Sofia, I think it could get away with being on normal Disney, but it does have a lot of straightforward "this is good/bad" episodes for the Jr. crowd, as well as some cringey one episode side-characters (one episode has seal people with surfer accents). But there's continuity and some of the kids do develop a little (without being reset in later episodes). The songs aren't bad, especially with the cast it has, and it has rather nice art direction.

It's a very simple show, it's on Disney Jr. after all, but it doesn't feel like it thinks its kid audience is dumb. That's just my opinion, though.
