I'm kind of perplexed that there are only a thimble's worth of episodes featuring Aku trying to become more powerful. Yes, he owns most of the Earth and wrecks havoc on other worlds in the future, but he seems largely the same as he was in the past.

Consider the X9 episode. X9 is a thinking, loving, sentient being. He's not evil, he's trying to protect something he loves.
And Jack murdered the shit out of him.
He didn't bleed, but he was for all intents and purposes a living being who was killed.
Consider the bounty hunter episode. No blood, but there's every reason to believe that he didn't kill those bounty hunters.
Jack has remorse when it comes to removing obstacles on his journey, or at least loses it as the series progressed. That's a core value of the show, and it's much more ethically questionable than graphic blood.

But it looks super interesting. Going dark could really help the bad future setting exude more atmosphere, in an Akira-esque fashion. Besides, the original show already reveled in violence, it was just clumsily censored by making everything a robot. The third episode had a bunch of slow-motion shots where Jack would cut robots in half and oil would spray from them and completely drench him, you know exactly what that's supposed to be.

This show was never good. Yes, I know you're all going to flip and spaz out, >hurr durr muh contrarianism
But it was never very good. It attempted to be all "style over substance" but what style there was was mostly cobbled together as very bland unimaginative ripoffs of 70s pulp action schlock and references to any other [insert popular "style over substance" director here] material. In the end, except for a few interesting locales, there was very little Genndy actually did that was worthy of note. In terms of actual story and action the entire thing is tepid. Even compared to "kids' cartoons" it's reduced to the simplest, no-stakes tensionless fluff. It's never "uh oh, Jack might actually have something to lose here" or "the stakes are actually high this time", it's always just "oh look the bad guy pissed off Jack, now Jack is going to clobber everything, wowee". It's as predictable than Tom & Jerry, without any of the originality in animation. This show was just... bad.
