Is this movie actually widely considered to be bad? I know it underperformed financially but I thought it was damn good.

>Is this movie actually widely considered to be bad?
I don't think I've ever seen anybody on /co/ speak of it positively. It's not like it gets Foodfight levels of criticism, though.
>>
>>84085029
I didn't get the movie. I mean why did they put a dog into human school? Wouldn't it cause a commotion? The little blonde girl just had an issue with a dog attending class. She even had him taken back home but the movie kept trying to justify the dogs playing human.
>>
Cars 2. It's got great animation, great action, a great score, and is overall fun. It's biggest flaw is really just being nothing like other Pixar movies and lacking emotion.

What the fuck is there to like about the movie delicious mother and daughter aside?

It was like it was trying it's hardest to be the most run of the mill Dream Works film it could be, the humor was shit, the characters were both boring and confusing at times (Hi, I'm a blonde bitch! Now I'm showing you how to have fun because I guess you never did that before!), it was loaded with pop cultural references that were dated before the film was released (le planking XDDD) and the plot involving whether Peabody could keep Sherman as his adopted son was so absurd I just couldn't bring myself to give one shit about it.

Sure there are worse movies out there, but it has almost no redeeming qualities about it.
>>
>>84087096
It had cute boy (with godtier Harvey Beaks voice) and cute-looking (though bitch) girl and shiny good animation. That was mostly it.

This. The film ultimately was nowhere near as good as it could've been for two reasons.
1. Penny is a generic valley girl bitch archetype that feels super artificial. During the first half of the movie, she torments Sherman for the incredibly stupid reason of "he was the father of the altruist dog" and she is incredibly fierce with her torment (she almost choked the boy). Also, her redemption arc comes out of nowhere and is super artificial.
2. The whole adoption sub plot hinges on a specism towards Mr. Peabody that is completely nonsensical. Besides Penny's torment of Sherman, Mrs. Grunion hates every bone (no pun intended) of him because he is a dog despite all his accomplishments and seemingly no incidents of harmful, feral behaviors and she pretty much is able to successfully convince everyone to take him down. Once everyone bar Sherman and some of the historical figures is set on imprisoning Mr. Peabody at the end of the movie, it's still for the reason of him being a dog. None of them seem to hate him for the reasons of that he has secretly held a fully fuctional, constantly used time machine for the purpose of educating Sherman, the dog has possibly timeline damaging relations with historical figures and Peabody has indirectly lead to the possible universal apocalypse.

>>84087527
OR here, the movie could've been so much better but also it could of have been so much worse. One of the scrapped plot was going to involve the empoyous duo trying to save the world from a supervillan that would've tried to steal the world's seven wonders which would've gotten rid of the whole ridiculous specism side plot and Penny. Unfortunately, another scrapped plot, penned by a Yogi Bear writer, seemed like it was trying to be a typical Dreamworks outcast story with an entire origin story for Mr. Peabody.

The final film is mediocre overall in my opinion. The father-son relations were heartwarming and the historical periods could lead to some clever set up but the two failures I listed above lead to its mediocrity. It's a shame that the movie and its show sequel are so mediocre because Rick and Morty is if one thinks about it a spiritual grandson to the original Mr. Peabody and Sherman shorts that takes everything that was so interesting about the old shorts, modernized it and puts its own spin on it.

>she torments Sherman for the incredibly stupid reason of "he was the father of the altruist dog" and she is incredibly fierce with her torment
A) She bullied him because he made her look stupid. She is supposed to be the smartest.
B) The bullying was particularly harsh in order to establish their mutual animosity. The movie didn't have time to show months of bullying.

Just saying.
>>
>>84085029
The animation was smooth like silk and fun and the dialogue was snappy. The plot was lacking though. Overall 7/10. Would watch again.

Exactly, this old plot was scrapped because Rob realized that this old plot was too similar to Despicable Me once the first trailer of that movie came out.
>>84091018
Although that does make Penny seem much more realistic in her hatred for Sherman, she never gets any karma back for what she hand ever done (including chocking the boy) and that still doesn't excuse her forced redemption.

If she had just triggered Sherman using seemingly benign terminology that was actually really hurtful to her classmate. It would've caused the whole adoption sub-plot to seem much more realistic considering Penny hadn't physically forced Sherman into biting her and Penny could've actually been a interesting character under the idea of being "seemingly benign but actually really hurtful in what she does".

the original Despicable Me felt like a movie that was supposed to originally be darker (and had hints towards much more biting satire), felt like they softened Gru a little bit too much with the kids, he could've kept being evil, heck the kids could've been his accomplices, that still would've been cute and funny.
But I think it got watered down at some point and everything they've made since has been extremely safe. The Secret Life of Pets is possibly the most mass-marketable thing they could've possibly come up with
