Late, but Peter was only in highschool for about thirty issues because originally, Amazing Spider-Man was progressing in real time. By issue 12, a year passed within the comic, so by issue 30, enough time had passed that Peter had graduated highschool.
It was shortly thereafter that they realized that Spider-Man was something that would be around for awhile, and if they kept aging him in real time, they'd be blazing past a lot of things and he'd be an old guy given enough time. That's when they slowed the progression of time in the comic down to a standstill.
I recall reading somewhere that Stan Lee sort of regretted not having Peter in highschool longer than what he ended up doing.
