The whole joke behind it was people getting mad over TTG being "NOT MUH TITANS" which there definitely was people acting like that, but the show used some weird analogy about clowns to show that it was silly to ask for a kid's show to be as tonally different as it was trying to be.

It's not the most high brow shit but fuck, it had the same animation style, the same style of humor from the original series and it has those nods to DC shit just as much as current TTG does. When there was news that it was becoming a full show, there was some disappointment (that in retrospect was dumb) that it was gonna be a comedy series like this but most people were again fine with it cause these original shorts were already good. That is until that new pastel tweening style got revealed as well as the writers straight up admitting they never watched the original series (which in this case its somewhat important cause these shorts played and made fun of that source material like so: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzqzgBEutpE)
That's a lot of what most people I talked to had issues with when the show first premiered and they stopped caring since. It's also kind of redundant that the show still relies on all of the designs and "lore" of that original series if it's just going to do its own thing for the most part. But it's a vehicle to sell toys for babies so it needed something to kick it off.
TL;DR: That episode was a pot-shot at the lowest common denominator and ever since it worked because that's all anyone thinks are the people who had beef with this show. Granted it's still just unmet expectations.
