>EW also learned a little about Vader’s reputation in the galaxy at this point in the chronology, roughly 19 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, when Anakin Skywalker lost most of his limbs and was horrifically burned in a battle with Obi-Wan, necessitating the life-sustaining armor he wears forever after. As Rogue One unfolds, Vader is still a background player in galactic politics.

Reshooting for the Afro makes little sense. To me, it's more likely that the Afro is for another movie/project that Whitaker's involved with and the reshoots are so the cast call him "Saw" rather than the character's original name.

There were two leaks about Whitaker's character in Rogue One several months ago. That he was a Clone Wars veteran and his codename/name was Castro.

Castro = Cuba
Cuba = Che Guavara
Che Guevara = Saw Gerrera

And there's pic related from the first trailer and Pablo's own words on the subject.

It seems he was always Saw but I'm guessing they are reshooting a major scene involving him but Whitaker grew an afro between shoots so now they need to reshoot all of the scenes for consistency.

>You guys don't think they got Hayden Christensen back, do you?

No. As much as I had zero problem with his work on the PT (unlike most people), he wouldn't be needed for this. At the end of RoTS, he was fresh in the suit. So it'd make sense to use Christensen (even though he kinda begged to do it) to be in it then because Vader would still have roughly had the same proportions as he did before he went in. RO is 19/20 years later. Vader's got more muscle mass now. He's grown into the suit.

>>

Just because he was mentioned doesn't mean he is still alive. Vader, Paplatine, Bail and Padme are mentioned in Bloodline, too, and they are dead. The context of where Gerrera gets mentioned has to do with looking back on the Rebellion as a whole, and how he was basically just a terrorist-to-be-all-terrorists in his time.

>Jyn Undercover...

>Rogue One is an ensemble story, but its central figure is Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), a young woman recruited by the Rebellion to infiltrate the Empire and secure details of its latest weapon – a moon-sized battle station we know as the Death Star. Here we see her in disguise, armed for conflict inside an Imperial corridor. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says Jyn starts as an outlaw and “becomes a kind of Joan of Arc in the story.”

>Krennic Schemes for Dominance

>Ben Mendelsohn's Director Orson Krennic is responsible for protecting the security of the Death Star project, but he's also a manipulator within the Empire. "He understands the system and he knows how things work, but he also is not above trying to bend it to get what he needs or what he thinks he wants," says Kiri Hart, Lucasfilm's head of story development. Krennic is intended to be a contrast to Imperial officers we’ve seen before, like Peter Cushing’s Grand Moff Tarkin. “Tarkin is the model for these really cool, icy types, you know?” Hart says. “Krennic runs a little hotter than that, so that’s kind of fun and it’s a little bit different. … He is unpredictable and volatile.”

>Rest for Baze and Chirrut

>Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen (Ip Man) plays Chirrut Imwe, a blind warrior monk who is not a Jedi but follows the path of the Force, and Chinese martial-arts actor and director Jiang Wen (Devils on the Door Step) co-stars as Baze Malbus, Chirrut’s Force-doubting rough-and-tumble protector. Like the original Star Wars, these characters owe a debt to the two peasants from a 1958 Akira Kurosawa adventure saga. “They’re inspired, again, by what inspired George in The Hidden Fortress, “ Kennedy says. “You could even say to some extent it’s, you know, R2 and C-3PO, a little bit of that.”

>aradise Lost

>Keeping with the Star Wars tradition of planets with a single ecosystem, one key battleground in Rogue One is on a world that might resemble a relaxing seaside holiday destination if not for its proximity to the Death Star. That leads to a key battle in the film taking place on its balmy shoreline — blue waters and an eerie gray sky.

>A Galactic South Pacific

>We don’t yet know the name of this world, but it’s meant to evoke both heaven and hell — tranquility and war. “There’s this sort of South Pacific, tropical paradise planet that subconsciously leads into some of the imagery associated with World War II,” director Gareth Edwards says. “We went to lots of different places around the world, and one of them was the Maldives. When you're shooting Stormtroopers in paradise, you have the best job in the world, you know? You can't really deny it at that point.”

>Toy Soldier

>In one of the more intriguing photos from Rogue One, we have this image of Deathtroopers prowling on a tundra. One of them is holding what appears to be ... an action figure of sorts. The filmmakers didn't want to explain exactly what's happening here, but they confirm: yes, that's a Stormtrooper doll, a galactic version of a toy soldier. And it will have special significance in the story. (Decades later, an abandoned girl name Rey will also fashion a doll for herself — this one an X-wing pilot.)

>K-2SO in Detail

>Here's a full-body shot of the newest Star Wars droid — a security robot known as K-2SO (Kaytoo Esso), who is voiced and performed via motion-capture by Alan Tudyk (Firefly.) Compare his gunmetal gray surface to the shimmering plating of "Goldenrod" C-3PO, and you'll see the difference between a utilitarian droid like Kaytoo and a protocol droid like Threepio. Kaytoo wasn't built to socialize. He's as brusque and blunt as he is strong. "He has a very dry delivery," Edwards says. "He doesn’t realize what he's saying is very funny."

Best droid incoming

>Donnie Yen’s blind warrior believes in the Force, even if he isn’t necessarily sensitive to it. One goal of Rogue One is to step away from the Jedi and Sith to explore the heroism of ordinary people. “The Jedi are pretty much extinct,” says Edwards. “It’s up to normal, everyday people to take a stand to stop evil from dominating the world.”

>Multicultural Cast

>In this behind the scenes shot from the Yavin-4 base, Edwards consults with some of his lead actors: Jones, Diego Luna, Yen, and Jiang and Tudyk (in his performance capture suit). The movie's Rebel team is a deliberately diverse mix from our own planet, meant to reflect a galaxy filled with a wide variety of humans from many different worlds (not to mention a healthy mix of creatures and aliens). “People are coming to the Rebellion because something has happened that has galvanized or politicized them,” says Hart. “The question just becomes: What are those triggers for different people in different places?"

Here comes the patting on their backs parts.

Actually if they'd had the budget and effects prepared they would have. Now seeing the equivalent of their rather slapdash cantina aliens in that scene would have been odd.

Of course the thing is it will always cost more to create an alien costume or even CGI than it is just tailoring a costume for a standard old boring human extra. Lucas, by the time of the Prequels when he had more cash than god, was more than happy to have all those Senate hover pods filled with aliens.

Of course it could be argued, and rightly so, that the galactic senate would have a diverse alien makeup (in more ways than one) than a ragtag rebel base, so there IS in-universe logic to it. At any rate Mark Hamill's story for those brit extras as the Rebellion whispering, "Wanker!" and "Git!" he and Harrison Ford walked by was pretty funny. Then when he told them they'd just saved the galaxy they were pretty cool about it.

I wonder how they'll use him. We've already seen Rebel leadership involved. Mon Mothma and some dude who was chewing out Jyn in the trailer. I suspect, I wonder... is he performing service as a drill sergeant? Wiping Rogue One into shape and making them work together as a cohesive team while reminding them what rebelling will cost them via his own injuries?

Basically I'm wondering if he'll have a command role or a training one. I can see him with either. He certainly lead the Onderon Partisans since the Clone Wars, but it would be fitting given he was once trained by Rex, Ahsoka, and Anakin Skywalker himself. He'd be passing on some of that to the people who will be stealing the plans and ultimately kickstarting the beginning of Vader and the Empire's end, so there's some nice thematic ties to that kind of role.
>>
>>84011115
maybe he's like Garm Bel Iblis, broke with Alliance leadership/Mothma to wage his own war
>>
>>84011115

I think they made it pretty clear as to what he is. He's a rebel extremist. He's the guy who has been leading some of the rebellion's more bloody campaigns. A contrast to Organa.

As to how he effects the group, I suspect it's going to be a sort of rock and hard place. He'll be doing his thing, Krennic will be doing his, and the main cast will be caught in the middle trying to do their thing.

Him having waged aggressive campaigns with no mercy against the Empire, using everything he can and willing to sacrifice everything to the extent that his own body is extremely fucked up would certainly sound like the kind of guy you'd call on to give a crash course to a ragtag group of neer-do-wells and scruffy nerfherders as Rogue One.

I just thought of something. What if the reason the Rule of Two had to be enacted was partly because of Sith greed, but also because the Sith ended up extremely weak. Think of it like this, to be an effective Sith you can't just be angry or brash, but you have to be smart too. That's why Anakin fucked up all the time as a Jedi because he would be too pissed off but he would be sloppy instead of focused on his anger and power. What if there ended up being so many Sith that quality control went out the window and you had thousands of Anakins going around fucking up battles and conquests because they didn't know how to properly use their anger. So then Bane enacted the Rule of Two so 1: Sith don't destroy themselves and 2: so the Sith are forced to have a system of quality control or else they'll go full retard and attack the Jedi too early and die out.

>“One of the things we’re doing with these Star Wars stories is embracing the uniqueness of the different genres, and we’re very deliberately leaning into the various styles of directors that we’re approaching so that each of these movies will very intentionally have a very different tone and style from the saga films,” Kennedy says, referring to the trilogy movies. “Gareth has shown a stylistic preference that’s much more handheld, visceral, inside-the-action kind of feel.”

USW is full of errors. Wait a year or two for a properly set-up reference book.

>Another thing they’re grappling with, Kennedy says, (and it has nothing to do with the reshoots) is whether Rogue One should incorporate some of the standard tropes of a Star Wars film, like an opening crawl, or whether it should distance itself stylistically from the “saga” trilogy films.

>“We talk about that all the time. It’s something that we’re right in the midst of discussing even now, so I don’t want to say definitively what we’re doing,” she said. “The crawl and some of those elements live so specifically within the ‘saga’ films that we are having a lot of discussion about what will define the [stand-alone] Star Wars Stories separate and apart from the saga films. So we’re right in the middle of talking about that.”

>Whatever they decide will likely set a new template for future stand-alone films. The next one, based on the adventures of a young Han Solo, is coming in 2018.

So probably no opening crawl in Rogue One.
