So it looks like Narklet and Vislet are not on the same page re: Artifacts.

Those names... Narklet = Nark Yinglet, Vislet = Visionary Yinglet? Narklet was sent to spy on Vislet after all... is that the joke, ValSalia?

For you, or anyone else is isn't sure whats happening

So earlier, our fancy lad Lopin the wounded one sold Kass the red clothed one an 'artifact' [1] that transformed him from a human male to a greater yinglet female, to his great distress. [2]

Also earlier Vislet the one with glasses mentioned to Kass that she believes Narklet the one in the first panel in OP's picture was sent to keep an eye on her because she was trying to progress her enclave through dealing with humans [3]

Here, in this page, we see Narklet say Lopin knows he must report any found artifacts. This tells us Yinglets in general know OF artifacts, but not what they do. They probably just assume them to be trinkets

Since Narklet obviously knows shit others do not it's fairly safe to assume he knows what happened to Kass, and he knows Kass's false backstory [4] is a load of shit.

Vislet has no idea what an artifact does, but she sees Narklet attempting to hide all of this by taking Lopin. So she butts in and has Lopin put in the safest place she can think of - with Kass at House Ivenmoth, away from the enclave.

So now Kass has his very own fancy lad.

Also to note: Narklet is the patriarch of scavenging, which means he is in the best possible place to find out when an artifact is discovered.

Ducks have corkscrew dicks.

Genitalia are the fastest evolving part of any organism. You can't really make any assumptions on yinglet genitalia on the basis that they're kind of like birds.

Though, given how freaky insect procreation is, that makes me kind of worried about what bug-girl might do to people that tickle her antennae.
>>
>>84006156
>You can't really make any assumptions on yinglet genitalia on the basis that they're kind of like birds.

You can make an educated guess, though. Based on information on the comics, and the size of yinglets, they have never small genitals. So yeah, like birds they probs just rub.

I like OOP's take on the Merchant Lord.

In any other story he would probably exploit Kass' situation and pay him a slave wage because Viracroix is probably the only person that would ever think of hiring a yinglet.

That's actually the main reason I haven't started a Patreon yet; the idea sounds great, but my daily life has been pretty unpredictable for the last couple years, and I can never tell if a huge project will come up that'll keep me from staying on a weekly-ish schedule.

Stuff just comes up sometimes for just about anyone, an artists can be particularly vulnerable when it happens, given the many hours of applied creative energy that it takes to produce just one page (especially at the detailed level that Chochi puts into his panels).

>>84001394

Content-based Patreon, eh? That could certainly change things. Gonna look into that.

>>84007316
This is an issue I've spent so much damn time figuring out how to handle. Obviously the characters are struggling with being Out of Place in their own ways, and have a whole lotta reasons not to be happy, but a big theme in this story is that when faced with absurd hopelessness in life, we can either cry or laugh, and this story is more about the latter option.

I mean obviously Kass ain't gonna have a great time once the reality of his situation comes down on him, but aside from the occasional "serious" page, that will never be the main theme of the comic.

>>84007353
See the above comment for how that'll likely be handled; but still, this is an era where if a human lives to be 40, then they're considered to have lived a good, long life.

>>84007390
>>84007445
Only in a loose semi-canon sort of way, at best. An important theme in the main story is that what happened to Kass is completely unheard of and singular.

In anything-goes-commission-fun-land, people are getting yingletized at a rate that will probably overcome the entire human race in a few decades, so that would definitely change things.

The "Of Ends and Beginnings" commission comic is the closest thing to canon I've done, as it takes place in a real location in the setting.

Which is why I like this comic so much. It uses TF as a premise, not as a constant part of the plot or fetish fuel.

I can support the content-based Patreon idea, since it won't hold you to a set schedule. I know you get a lot of people asking about the next update, but I'd much rather you take the time to get the page where you want it instead of feeling forced to make a rushed update or a filler page.

By the way, I think I mentioned this too late in the last thread and you didn't see it, but have you given any thought into taking all the Regional Guide pages and putting them into their own chapter in the archives? I really didn't notice it on my first read, but on the re-read I noticed they really break the pacing of the story and feel awkwardly placed. I don't think they should be shoved into the side-stories and art section since they contain important lore about the world, but inter-spaced inside the chapters feels weird. What say you?

>Which is why I like this comic so much. It uses TF as a premise, not as a constant part of the plot or fetish fuel.

That's actually a big relief to hear; as I've worked out the plot and tone of the story, I've often felt that I wasn't "doing it right" by having only one transformation, and not focusing on the angst of dysphoria of the situation.

I mean, I love those aspects in comics I read like Endtown and El Goonish Shive, but I feel that they've already got that covered, so I wanted to take this story in a different direction that I hadn't really seen in many others.

So hearing that it works, rather than that I've chosen a genre and removed its major appeals, really puts me at ease and makes me more confident about staying the course.

>>84009546
>have you given any thought into taking all the Regional Guide pages and putting them into their own chapter in the archives?

I've considered this a few times, actually, especially since I'm making sure none of them are mandatory reading in order to follow the plot. The only reason I haven't already is that they might play into another feature has yet to be introduced... so I want to see how that will flow before I make that change.

>>84009041
Yes indeed, "wacky anatomy" is one of their defining features. And yeah, the whole "highly diverse genetic variation" thing is in part codeword for "Hey, you wanna draw them [x] way? Go for it, it's all good"

And there's so much damn character in these pics, especially in the facial expressions; each one of these is going into a special folder in my hard drive forever.

Good call. I probably wouldn't be reading if the pick-me-up scenes had gone in the opposite direction. Not out of disgust or anything, just disinterest. If there's nothing to balance out the drawbacks of his situation and he's better off just killing himself, why read at all? I mean, yeah, to hope he finds a way to turn back is the obvious answer. But if he'd been disowned by his friends and abused by the Merchant and reduced to sleeping in gutters with his nethers to the wall hope wouldn't feel worth the effort. As is you've counterbalanced the drawbacks of his situation nicely.

Getting rid of those and moving them somewhere else would solve the pacing problems sure, but you could use them as a tool for pacing instead!

Think loading screens: The characters are sleeping-travelling or some other boring thing that requires time, and you want to make clear that it took long? There goes a loading screen, ala Skyrim; see SSSS for a somewhat successful implementation of the concept

This page doesn't make a ton of sense.

Why is the patriarch of scavenging giving direct orders to the scouts, instead of (a) the matriarch who we learned earlier (OOP009) sent them out or (b) the actual patriarch of scouts, Beizel or whoever? Where is he?

Why is Narklet speaking at the start of this page instead of Kass, who had just let out a long vowel-laden howl at the end of the last page?

Why is Kass merely annoyed instead of angry/curious/manic/sleepy or any of a dozen other feelings? Why isn't he a more active participant in this scene? Did the last page not happen?

How is it seemingly so easy for Vizlet to bansih/transfer Lopin to Kass's protection over the wishes of Narklet? For such an important event to the plot it happened pretty hastily - it took more panels for Kass to get past the door guards or learn to eat a clam...

The two best aspects of this comic are characterization and setting and I felt both just ate it on this page in order to move the plot forward.

The other time I felt this way was Prologue 13, where Kass starts becoming a Yinglet:

>Isher: Did you know Indrel go completely and utterly insane when they go too long out of their hive? And that Yannit has been bansihed from hers? And you're being held responsible for her actions from here on out? What are we going to do Kass?

>Kass: Well that is certainly a lot to think about. On a related note I would like to talk about this item I just purchased after an amusing spectacle you weren't there to see and that has nothing to do with Yannit or you in any way whatsoever. See, here it is. So far nothing bad has happened but the plot has to go forward CRACK

Great comic its just that it feels rushed when we get to important plot waypoints.
>>
>>84010073
>I've often felt that I wasn't "doing it right"
You've probably already been told this but just wanted to say that another thing you've been doing differently but correctly is your setting.
It's clear that your setting is well thought out and actually makes at least internal sense, it's not just some flimsy backdrop for someone's TF fetish.

>Why is the patriarch of scavenging giving direct orders to the scouts
Because he's trying to hide Lopin. You can assume any of the patriarchs can give the scouts orders, but the patriarch of scouting would have priority

>Why is Narklet speaking at the start of this page instead of Kass
See above. He's trying to remove Lopin from sight immediately. Secondly, Kass did not speak at the end. He spoke in the middle. The guards spoke after that

>Why is Kass merely annoyed instead of angry/curious/manic/sleepy or any of a dozen other feelings? Why isn't he a more active participant in this scene?
Because he's falling asleep on his feet, and he is annoyed because he is being used but can't do much about it.

Alternatively because he can't exactly say anything about his transformation in front of Narklet, considering he already made a backstory.

>How is it seemingly so easy for Vizlet to bansih/transfer Lopin to Kass's protection over the wishes of Narklet?
She made a big dramatic deal over it, while Narklet's was more understated.

It would be different for Narklet to counter her now because a) he is not the scouting patriarch and probably doesn't have the authority and b) he would draw even more attention to this.

>For such an important event to the plot it happened pretty hastily
Because the characters wanted it to

Narklet does not want this to go further because there is information he wants hidden
Vislet does not want this to go further because she also wants this low-key until she can figure out what is actually going on.

They both purposefully tried to cut this short. Vislet was just for now the more effective

>The other time I felt this way was Prologue 13, where Kass starts becoming a Yinglet
Yeah I actually agree with you there but I guess Val wanted the series to move forward with it's major plot point before it dragged out.
>>
>>84014050
>>84014851
Yeah, I can't say it's unreasonable to feel this last page went a little fast; a lot of that has to do with Vizlet trying to quickly cut in on Narklet's whatever-he's-up-to by being all "Oh I agree, clearly he must be punished, I am totally with you on that and not trying to undermine you" before anyone can react.

And Kobold's right, in that all Patriarchs can give orders, but the Patriarch of a particular group gets priority.

But with that said, I do admit I've sped through a few pages in order to advance the plot, especially the earlier one you mentioned; originally I was going to illustrate Isher and Yannit's visit to Ivenmoth HQ, but it was taking a lot longer than I'd anticipated to get to the first big Plot Hook, which is what actually grabbed the first handful of readers.

This might also have to do with the format I'm drawing these in, in which I forego the standard page size so I can keep adding however many panels the page needs to wrap up well. The upside is the freedom that gives me to go with however many panels I need, but it also is the main reason it's hard to nail down releases to a specific schedule; some comics are 4 panels, some are 10+.

And when it turns out that I might need to split up one page into two or more in order to have something happen smoothly, it can be tempting to just compress it into one.

And admittedly I did feel a bit of pressure (not bad, necessarily) to get this next page up in around a week from the last one!

There we go.
>>
>>84014851

Look I know WHY things are happening plot wise and motivation wise but the characterization on this page is ineffective (which is rare for this comic)

Most striking is how Kass goes from about to blow up on the last page to being merely annoyed on this one.

Vizlet's "big dramatic deal" feels as perfunctionary as her officially welcoming Kass to the enclave, when she was merely repeating a formulaic greeting. You are interpreting it as it should have been, as the scene demanded, but that's not how it was.

>it happened hastily because the characters wanted it to

It happened because the plot engine kicked into high gear here and dragged everything after it. Conversely, it took PAGES to get Kass through the front door and to an imminent patriarch meeting, followed by a page that was basically a smekfest. (all of which was great btw)

This isn't a HUGE DEAL but its just jarring in a comic that has had excellent pacing, dialogue, and characterization so far. We've had pages of Kass crying to his friends and explaining how he feels and the trademaster and martriarch walking and talking and explaining and hinting etc. which is great its what makes this comic worth reading instead of a bunch of weird stuff that happens...
then we get to the foreshadowed Lopin v. Matriarch confrontation and Lopin v. Kass confrontation and poof its over. It's transparently a plot point getting resolved as quickly as possible.

I think you needed at least a third character such as Poak or Chakki to express a "don't punish him" viewpoint for whatever stupid reason (duh he didn't do anything wrong did he who is he anyways / oh my god his clothes are ruined hasn't he suffered enough) that Vizlet could then override to make that interpretation clear/believable.

Instead it reads very much as "I am trying to undermine you Narklet" to the extent that I wonder what the point was of going through all that dress up with Kass if Vizlet was just going to walk over him later. Also if she has that much power over patriarchs, why does she even care what Narklet thinks if he's just one among five patriarchs?

I'm not expecting answers there obviously that's secret sauce, I'm just saying right now the ingredients don't taste right.

>And when it turns out that I might need to split up one page into two or more in order to have something happen smoothly, it can be tempting to just compress it into one.

I figured it was something like that. As long as you're self-aware, that's all this criticism is meant to accomplish. You've got a really engrossing comic going, its good enough that any molehills stand out like mountains.

Pic related, its a similar and important exchange I felt was handled really well (along with the preceding and succeeding pages)

Even though I've tightened up some of the mood and character designs, I still feel like this comic is in its early "figuring out what it wants to be" stage, kinda like what Gunnerkrigg Court was as this point: http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=2 as opposed to how tight the storytelling and character designs are now.

Although with that said, the next page should give a more solid idea of where Vizlet wants to go with what she just did!

Uhhhhhhhhhh if Kass gets re-humanized then you ain't gonna get any of that strange; it seems to be in your best interests that he stays like he is.

>>84017327
I would run right into that mess and start grabbing as many as I can, even though I would 100% get immediately pulped by the gravity traps

>>84021230
I think the best part of this is the hole that obviously got roughly poked open to make room for the shelltooth

>>84021462
Easy! Just apply this equation:
-Is there a yinglet involved?
-If yes, then "super awkward"

>>84021851
Seriously man, I'd hang around here just for these

>>84028533
Well hey, you can just pay someone do draw more for you! There is very clearly an active market for such things.

wh-why?

Isher's not gonna have eyes for anyone else if he's still in the picture! It is in your best interest to cuck ying-Kass.
>>
>>84030286
Oh, sorry. I was one of the guys agreeing with him, from a purely story perspective. By "any of that" I thought you meant Kass & Isher getting together.

>Also if she has that much power over patriarchs, why does she even care what Narklet thinks if he's just one among five patriarchs?
And the President can Veto acts of congress, why does the President care what congress does? Perhaps if the patriarchs decide together, they can kick the matriarch out of the position? Besides, we haven't seen what Narklet plans on doing about the situation yet.

It's obvious Vizlet is undermining him, and neither one is going to say shit about it in front of the kids(other yinglets). Perhaps discord in front of the underyings leads to chaos and confusion?(at least more than usual for yinglets)

>I'm not expecting answers there obviously that's secret sauce, I'm just saying right now the ingredients don't taste right.

We still don't know the exact specifics of how their society operates, so I'm kinda confused as to how you can say it doesn't feel right when we don't even know what it's supposed to be yet.

Name of the comfy accordion song, and not "On the Champs Désolés" from Blood & Wine?
>>
>>84021462
>>84021660
Huh. That hadn't crossed my mind until now. Then again, there are very few super powers that wouldn't make a yinglet flail his arms and EEEEEE like no tomorrow

>>84030017
In my mind, Peter yinglet is smarter than the average yinglet, but a yinglet nonetheless because he actually made holes for the ears but not for the tooth

Welp, still not as popular as Endtown or Poppy, but it's growing.

Last thread hit bump limit.
We're few, but we're obsessive.
>>

Seriously though, it's way too early in this comic's lifecycle to compare to well-established names like those, so I'm happy it's even being thrown around with those big names at this point.

One step at a time, and all that.
>>
>>84032993
Yeah, I know it doesn't have the archives or fanbases of those two, I just compared it to those two since they are also currently popular webcomics with anthro characters who's artists have been known to frequent /co/. I would have included Prequel as well, but Prequel is dead in the water until Kaz finally gets past Mt. Merchandise and escapes from the land of Kickstarter Obligations.

PS. Underyings.

Aaron's visits /end/?
>>
>>84033587
He rarely posts, but he checks it out from time to time. He even gave us cheesecake

It's pretty much because /co/ convinced him to that he made a Patreon, and that's just about saved his life, given it's an extra 20k a year he has for medical expenses and whatnot
>>
>>84033587
He visited a few times before deciding to stay behind email, now just his wife visits. Been a while since I've visited the threads though, have things changed since then?

I don't believe you.
You should totally prove me wrong wouldn't I look silly haha.
>>
>>84033679
Why not go ask in the ENDTOWN thread? They have links.
>>
>>84033679
I don't think the archives work any more, anon

I'm sure the Endtown guys can link you, I didn't save it.

Eh. The last time didn't go down so good.
>>
Hey Val, are you going to draw lewds of Isher with human Kass?
>>
>>84033815
You really are dense aren't you? ASK FOR A LINK TO THE ENDTOWN BOORU!

For the love of god man, the off-site art archive exists for a reason! Think about it!
>>
>>84033656
Someone posted under his name once or twice recently, but that might just have been KingCheetah dicking around.

I wouldn't be surprised if he still reads the threads, though.
>>
>>84033838
Chill mang. Just my way of saying "thanks but I'm good". I'm not invested enough in seeing it to risk ruffling feathers again.
Besides I just Googled the booru. I'm guessing it's the Allie?

If DK has since drawn it and wants to reserve the right to hold it for ransom I will reciprocate.
Presuming I can afford it. As of this morning my currency's become worthless, apparently.
