Hard to believe this was actually released to theaters. How did this mess ever actually make it out of Disney studios?
>>
>>83991980
I enjoyed it quite a bit.
>>
Desperate for that Shrek money.
>>
>>83991980
They really, really wanted that Shrek money. They wasted most of the early 2000s trying to experiment beyond the Disney princess mold, and once they wasted all their goodwill they lunged for the quick and easy buck to try and pay back their losses.

What was enjoyable

It wasn't even that bad. Plus the credits song was baller. Not too keen on Foxy Loxy having her brainwaves scrambled into a different person. Then the pig taking advantage. Dunno, didn't sit right with me, even as a kid.

I can't believe this was supposed to be a family film. The dad was such a dick. Hell, everyone apart from the mc was a dick.
>>
>>83992167
I think that's the biggest problem with this film. Not even the main character is likable, there's no one any normal person would cheer for.

>Not long after that project was shelved, I received a call from Klay Hall, who was directing Chicken Little 2. He was given the mandate to create a story reel for his project in the same time frame that we did for Aristocats 2. I don’t think he or the other board artists at Disney were too excited about the deadline, but I guess Klay figured that it would be a good idea to get someone involved who had actually had experience working at this pace. Overall, the script for Chicken Little 2 was pretty good and I felt great about the sequences in which I was involved. Klay gave me a good deal of freedom to invent and I really appreciated working with him and loved the project.

>In the story, Chicken Little finds himself in the midst of a love triangle. On one side, is his childhood sweetheart (but not too attractive) Abby “ugly-duck” Mallard. On the other side, is the very attractive newcomer, Raffaela, the French sheep. Abby’s at a tremendous disadvantage here, so she goes to great lengths to give herself a makeover. A portion of the makeover sequence is represented on my website, which shows Abby’s grand entrance at school with her new-found look. The script, in this case, had dialog but very little specific action, so most of the visuals and business are original ideas that I was free to invent. Working on this type of scene is great fun for an artist.

It was during that weird Dark Age of Disney movies when they were trying too hard to compete with Dreamworks. Started around Brother Bear and ended somewhere around Bolt.

Pic related came out the year before

Well...would fug Abby.

Out of other options for sequel ideas, they went to making the only semi-likable character in the movie absolutely despicable.

These plots never work.

>To make Artistocats 2, we tried to distill the essence of the original film. In the first film, the kittens’ nemesis was a misguided butler intent on stealing their fortune. The sequel created a similar dynamic by pitting them against a jewel thief on the open seas aboard a luxury cruise ship.

>The flavor of the film was sort of a mystery/farce/comedy. There was also a young kitty love interest for Marie who became the focal character of the film. By singling out one character for the central story arc we could do a better job at strengthening the elements of the film. Sometimes when you have an ensemble cast, things can really get watered down because you don’t have enough time to spend with each character. We tried to avoid that pitfall.

>The original film takes place in Paris but we didn’t feel they exploited the setting to its fullest potential. We wanted to adopt a European flair by filling our ship with a cast from places like France, Scotland, England, Spain, etc, thus creating a rich environment in both scenery and character in the era of the early 1900s. Our main objective besides the mystery element was to make it completely fun. We worked hard to up the action scenes and create a level of high energy.

>I really think this film was headed in the right direction and with another pass we could have gotten it right but there are other important considerations in making films of any kind. Making sure you have an audience for your movie is paramount. Disney just felt that Aristocats 2 was in jeopardy of falling through the cracks in a competitive marketplace.

It was back during the dying years of 2D. Disney had been dealing with failure after failure, and they'd been sitting about and grinding their teeth while Dreamworks was fucking them up with CGI hit after CGI hit. This was the first foray into the ring since Dinosaur, and they wanted to hit the demographic that made Shark Tale a hit, they just said "For once, we want to have a hit that makes over 300 million."

They succeeded, and no 2D film since the turn of the century until now(Save the Simpsons Movie), can say the same.

This was the first dagger into the back of 2D. It wasn't big, it wasn't fatal, but it was the first big strike.

Finally saw Chicken Little last year to see what the big deal was. It was pretty bad, as expected, but some of the comedy bits were okay and at times I liked the friendship dynamic between the main characters; wouldn't say watching it was awful or even boring though I wouldn't do so again anytime soon.

Dinosaur is pretty bad too when it comes to Disney movies. I wanna say it was "better" than Chicken Little for not doing anything really obviously horrible or dumb, but it's also so derivative and boring and safe that it may actually be worse.
>>
>>83996159
Flushed Away is pretty top tier.

Unless I think that because I watched it so many times on road trips as a kid.

Oh God, the aliens.

Let me tell you about the aliens.

The director is MArk Dindal, right? Cats Don't Dance and Emperor's New Groove. So it should be clear that he's a competent director.

He storyboards out the whole film with his crew. It's a nice, neat little slice of life story about a chicken who learns to stop worrying about every little thing and accept life as it comes.Nothing too flashy, but a serviceable story with genuine emotion.

He goes on vacation for a week.

He comes back to find out executives have rewritten the entire script and are ordering him to make it about aliens.

That story right there encapsulates everything wrong with Disney in the late 90's earl 00's. Chicken Little was the culmination of all the bullshit building up in Disney at the time.

>>83991980

For your information I've watched nearly of all the films by WDAS and let me tell you, this is nothing like those. Haven't watched those in a while so my memory of them is a bit bad so forgive me.

>Dad goes out to find son in the middle of the night nonstop and still didn't give up even after getting swallowed up by a whale
>I can't remember this one much but wasn't the dad really protective over his daughter and even sacrificed his life for the dude?
>I don't think I need to explain why Mufasa is a great father

The dad here didn't even try to support his son and never took his side until the end and that's when the son had proof or some shit like that. It's just horrible.
>>
>>84005023
Yeah, the dad in Pocahontas was protective of his daughter and his people. It's what makes his xenophobia more acceptable compared to Ratcliffe's. And he was the first to set aside his fear and hate to attempt peace.
>>
>>84005023
I'm not speaking specifically of dads, just that the setting is all-around filled with assholes in a lot of Disney movies.
It was Smith who sacrificed to save Pocahontas' dad (who was trying to kill him) not the other way around. Powhatan was a dick.
I wouldn't exactly say Mufasa was a great dad, just had a bunch of quotable inspirational dialogue.

>It's just horrible.
You have a very low treshold for horrible.
>>
>>84005085
Ahh well my bad. But the thing is that you know both of them actually cared deeply for their kid and didn't try to avoid them at all costs like they did with Chicken Little. Well a lot of people agree with me on this but okay. I just think those films balanced it out well while this one didn't.

Wow. A random jewel thief, uninterested in cats save some deux ex machina, is similar to a legal heir to whom they are a legit obstacle how, exactly?

And wow, let's do that world-tour travel-from-country-to-country thing, because every middle manager of bad kiddie animation wants to make that "Chipmunk Adventure" lightning strike again. Warner wanted it so badly that they made it TWICE, as Tweety's Hi-Flying Adventure AND Looney Tunes Back in Action. And all THREE major attempts to revive Jay Ward characters forced it on them (in essence, the Boris and Natasha live-action movie, the Rocky and Bullwinkle live-action/animated movie, and the Peabody and Sherman movie all did it!).

The amazing thing is that none of these movies exactly set the world on fire, so there is no track record of this plot idea leading to easy money, but every studio wants to do it again and again anyway.

God, that design. Both the ball and the boy look like embarrassed Borscht belt comedians.

Girl was good but as I recall, the pic is set in the 1930s, the black characters lead a forced-segregated life, and while the movie has the white boy travel with them for awhile, it never even tries to object to that status quo. The movie looks clumsily racist even if you're not PC.

What the fuck? Basically everyone in this thread is agreeing it's a fucking stupid idea

>It's a nice, neat little slice of life story about a chicken who learns to stop worrying about every little thing and accept life as it comes

There's a problem, though: who is calling out for this story to be made, especially with the characters looking the way they look? Who really considers the traditional Chicken Little a top-tier fairy tale, anyway? Basically, Dindal was making the best of a bad concept pushed on him: "Retell the uneventful story of an unnecessarily panicky bird on a farm." It sounds like he was doing it cleverly, but in a manner that didn't make it much more than a slice of life sitcom.

If I were an executive tasked with making a Chicken Little movie succeed, I would probably think: "What is the one iconic concept associated with this story? The idea of the sky falling, though it never does. ...How can we make it REALLY fall?"

That way clearly led to the aliens, though it didn't have to—that was the result of unimaginative execs. But by not going further with the falling-sky concept, Dindal was dooming himself to executive meddling.

>Meet the Robinsons was pure kino

Meet the Robinsons had a very good basic idea, and Wilbur Robinson and Lewis are both great characters. But that mess of a storyline.

Get out here, pleb.
>>

With the exception of Happy Feet (maybe) nobody really remembers those movies anymore than they remember most of the Disney movies released in the 2000s that isn't Lilo and Stitch.

I remember enjoyed it back then but now i agree. It is shit.

>How did this mess ever actually make it out of Disney studios?

The same reason Mars needs Moms, Space Chimps, The Nutjob, Doogal, Planet 51, Escape from Planet Earth and other less than mediocre animated CGI films were green-lit. There are people in the business who actually think this shit will make a profit from toys and merchandising when truthfully it's just a big waste of time and money. Nobody gives a shit about these films (except maybe a very small autistic minority) and the creators themselves.

Brother Bear, Bolt and Meet the Robinsons were okay, but you're right about everything else. What the hell was going through these people's heads? Did they seriously think people would actually enjoy this crap?

Doogal was after that sweet spot of Magic Roubdabout nostalgia. And then it was re-dubbed for Americans because they don't have any Magic Roundabout nostalgia.

I have no idea what the plot of that film was. Like I remember certain elements of the film but I don't remember how they were fit into a coherent narrative together. Probably not very well.

I still don't get why people made Will Smith fish rich and famous all because he claimed to have killed a shark. He literally had no proof and people just took his the two hippies word for it yet no one listened to him before? I think I just got dumber for even thinking about that crap. But AT THE CAR WASH, YEAH!
