>It's a warm and breezy evening in Anontown, USA, and Anon has elected to spend it at home, in his room, on his computer, in his underpants.
>He sips from a 2-liter bottle of Mt. Dew as he browses a /co/ thread about the ethics of Watchmen. Seeing the arguments going nowhere, he elects to switch boards.
>He settles for /trash/ with the hopes of finding some /zoo/ related lewds
>A viable thread appears on the third page, and he opens it. Typical /trash/talk about which characters are the most lewd and which would be the most enjoyable to snuggle with.
>He scrolls past a bizarre looking thumbnail with a file extension he doesn't recognize: ".prtl"
>He opens it, revealing a swirling blue pattern with a beckoning canine paw in the center.
>Anon jokingly touches his monitor screen as if to touch the paw, and is immediately met with a violent jerking sensation as he is pulled through his screen and into horrifying vortex of swirling colors.
>the vortex shatters, and the blackness behind it shatters, and the whiteness behind it shatters, and the nothingness behind it shatters. Anon finds himself drifting between an infinite number of parallel dimensions
>some are terrifying, some are beautiful, and one in the distance looks very familiar
>before Anon can think of anything, every subatomic particle in his body is ripped apart and sent ricocheting towards the colorful dimension in the distance. Anon blacks out.
>when he awakens, he finds himself suspended hundreds of feet above the ground by a series of vines.
>once his senses return, he is able to make out the shapes and colors of familiar plantlife and a canopy of leaves high above him. He's in some sort of jungle
>before anon can even wonder where he is, the vines snap, and he plummets
>Anon closes his eyes and braces for impact, but is surprised when he is met by the sensation of being caught by a large furry lifeform
>"Sir, are you ok?"

>"Yes, I think s..." Anon's last word is cut off by the sight of his savior, a large black panther standing on it's hind legs, and wearing clothes
>the large cat sets Anon down on the ground and he gets to his feet
>"Where am I?" asks Anon
>"The Rainforest District" answers the panther
>"Y-y-y-y-you mean in Zuh-zuh-z-z-z-Zootopia???"
>"Of course" says the panther with an expression that seems to "where the fuck else?" An expression that does not improve as the strange green creature began to laugh and shout and run down the street screaming "I"M IN ZOOTOPIA!!!!"
>"What a fucking autist" thought the panther.

>a burlap sack is placed on Anon's head but it slips off and reveals that his assailants are wolves in black uniforms. The van is speeding down the crowded streets of downtown way faster than it has any reason to go.
>Anon looks at the two wolves he is sharing the back compartment with and spits out "Who are you?? Why are you doing this??"
>"QUIET" barks one of the wolves as he removes a ball gag from the glove compartment
>"Wait a second, do you work for the mayor???" shrieks anon as his feet and hands are restrained.
>"I SAID QUIET" shouts the wolf as he prepares to gag Anon.
>"Awoooooooooo" howls Anon as the gag is fixated on his mouth
>The driver of the van joins in and begins howling
>the other two wolves shout in unison "Goddammit Rick, don't do thAwooooooooo" both ending with an interjected howl.
>Anon squirms and thrashes about until one of the wolves knocks him upside the head and puts his lights out for the second time today.

>"UUuugh, mayor....Mayor Lionheart....what am I doing here....where am I?" Anon asks, also for the second time today.
>"That's for me to know and you not to know" answers the lion. "You've caused quiet a disturbance today. I got over 50 calls to my hotline and all of them were about some sort of smooth skinned alien running down the street and screaming!" "Didn't believe the first couple but after observing traffic cam footage I started to have my suspicions, so I sent for my boys to come...pick you up, and here we are now." "I hope they weren't too rough on you Mr....?"
>"Anon"
>"Mr. Anon. I'm sorry for all of this but I can't have you running about disturbing the peace like this."
>"Since when is it a crime to run and shout?" asks Anon quietly
>"It's not, you're not under arrest for anything, but I'm a public servant, and I have to see to it that the people of Zootopia aren't living in a state of paranoia. I've dealt with that once, and it's god awful."
>"yeah I know I saw the movie like 25 times...." Anon trailed off at the end
>"Excuse me?" opined Lionheart quizzically.
>"Oh nothing!! Nothing, I'm just kind of out of it, your boys hit me pretty hard. When can I leave?"
"Well you see that's the tricky part, we don't anything about who you are or where you came from, and we can't change your current situation until we have some answers." said Lionheart in an apologetic manor.
>"Well that's fine. Ask me anything, shoot" says Anon.
>"Oh I won't be doing the interrogation, we've got the finest interrogators from the ZPD on their way to take care of that"
>"And who are they?" asks Anon with a gleam of hope
>"Officers Judy Hopps and Nicholas Wilde" replies Lionheart confidently

Not a massive smile does a happy expression make, comrade. Mouth too wide open, it needs to be slighter than that with less teeth. The main issue is that you only used the lower eyelids to try and convey the feeling. You need to make adjustments to the eyebrows, eyelids, -and- the irises for a complete display of happiness, and for this charqacter, I would even go as far to adjust the ears and cheeks along with it as polish. Also, it would make sense for the camera to not be directly pointing at the characters face. Offset that a little and you get some depth to your character without having to fuck around with DOF bullshittery too much. Also, assuming you are fault to "i can only TRULY see it when I spend 7 hours rendering", it would be a good idea to take advantage of the OpenGL rendering + Display > Only Render in texture view mode + ticking the Low_Res option in the rig controls, or using the Simplify perameters in the properties panl > Scene > Simplify: subdivision 0 - 2 (to prevent having to use the modifier fuckery hidden in the settings).

OK, so... I'll do everything that you said with the smile and stuff. Eyelids I played around with for a while and couldn't get right, so I will go back to that later. I wasn't aware that I could change the irises on this model, so I'll have a play around with that now.

Yeah, I can change the camera easily. I tried DOF for a bit but I really didn't like the blurriness and I haven't properly gone over it in my textbook yet so I don't want to play around with it too much.

For rendering, I do a quick 5K render @ 8 samples to get a good idea of it. Takes about 30 seconds and is faster and better than 1440p 24, so yeah. I'll have a look at the OpenGL stuff now.

Thanks for the really detailed feedback! Posted it here hoping you'd show up...

If you want, blame the rigging in the face, I do that myself. The model is severely lacking in that aspect. However, there are a few things you can change in the pose. Here are some pointers to why she looks insane.

- Too much white in the eyes. The more white in the eyes, the more a character looks surprised/crazy. Look at pictures of people laughing, most of the times they squint or close their eyes. A crazy person keeps them wide open when laughing.
- The teeth. Open your mouth and move your lips like the model there and look at yourself in a mirror. You will notice that you will look aggresive, your mouth is way too open and your teeth are exposed too much. The teeth comunicate strong emotions, one of them aggression. Limit how much of them are visible.

There is a dirty trick you can use and thats removing most teeth except the bucktooth. It gives a baby face appearance and makes you feel like a plastic surgeon.

Here is a quick example removing the teeth, to show you how much the "feel" of the face changes. Play with the eyelids and eyebrows

- The camera also plays some role here, too frontal for my taste, but thats only my opinion.

>"They should be here any minute now" said Lionheart as he got up to leave the room. "Depending on their evaluation of you, we might have an official news broadcast to inform the townspeople of your existence, not that a lot of them aren't already aware. If in fact, they deduce that you are a menace, we will have no choice but to keep you locked up for quite a while longer until we can find a....solution.
"Aw geez" whispered Anon as he propped his elbows on the table and laid his face in his hands.
"It's not for me to say, but you seem alright to me Mr. Anon. Just be polite and I'm sure they'll have no trouble assuring your acceptance into our society"

>If you want, blame the rigging in the face, I do that myself.

I pretend to deny it, but I fall fault to this every now and then. Let's say that I've known the creator's work for a little while, and the rigging tends to not be at the highest possible quality for true expression in every way imaginable. not to say they're bad, but I often find myself not pleased with certain aspects of it, but of course I can't expect a Pixar level rig from him since he isn't necessarily a pro rigger. We'll just have to live with what we get, and I am still grateful for his hard work.

Let me give you one big tip for the next time you try to pose and get stumped like this, which I learned from drawing:

GET. REFERENCES. And make them your best fucking friends.

Google images, the movie itself, your face in a mirror, just get em. Study them and pay attention to each detail you can find. Watch the eyes, the eyelids, the eyebrows, the cheeks, the ears, nostrils, notice wrinkles, squints, everything.

The emotions you notice in people are a complex thing made up of a bunch of small details, yet we only consciently notice a small part of them. References are cheat sheets that let you know which ones you are forgetting and could be added to your work, be either a pose or a drawing.

>In stepped Judy and Nick, both in police uniform, Nick wearing his sunglasses.
>"Oh gooooooooooooood" screamed Anon in his head
>Judy was the first to speak, saying calmly "Hello there Mr..." she paused to look at her briefing "Anon!"
>Before Anon could reply, Nick cut in saying "Look here friendo-Nintendo, we can do this the easy way, or we can do this the hard way" slamming his paws on the table.
>"Nick stop, I don't think we're gonna have to use that routine on this one, he hasn't done anything wrong!" Judy paused to look up at Anon and smile gently. "He's just different, that's all."
> Anon grinned and released a soft "heh heh"
>"Ok Mr. Anon" continued Nick "We're not gonna hurt you, we're just here to ask you a few questions. If you cooperate, we can get out of here real quick, you and us both."
>"Ok!" said Anon as he sat up straight in his chair, quite excited now.
>"What is your full name"
>"Anon E. Moose"
>Judy began writing on her clipboard.
>"Sex?" asked Nick
>"Yes please" though Anon, though aloud he said "Male"
>"Where are you from?"
>"Well, this is going to sound really crazy, but I'm from......another...dimension"
>The room was silent for a moment as Nick and Judy stared at Anon in disbelief
>Nick broke the silence by saying to Judy, "I think he's lying" making no effort to conceal the comment
>"Nick just hear him out" said Judy in an annoyed tone of voice. "Sorry about that Anon. Could you tell us how you got here?"

Yes, I tried to do it blind at first and it was incredibly difficult (well it still is, but even more so).

I have it setup like this now, but it's a bit... Uh... Creepy. Broken a personal record for the most women who've smiled at me at once though.

I'll move my image as I do different bits. Don't know why I find this fun. Should be infuriating.

>Nick opened his mouth to speak and raised a forefinger but instead opted to just roll his eyes and center his focus back on the alien man.
>"Would you classify yourself as a predator or as prey, Mr. Anon?" asked Judy politely
>"Um, prey, yeah prey" said Anon, knowing that the other kids at school had thought so

Here's something I've been thinking about for a couple days. In the Zootopia world, it's understood that subgroups are most likely divided up into countries, Mammals in one, Reptiles, and probably Amphibians in another, maybe even an Atlantian country for fish and sea life.

We see mostly African animals, seeing as how they did a large African study for the movie, such as Hippos, Elephants, Rhinos, Antelopes, Lions, Tigers. But we do see Woodland animals, Rabbits, Foxes, Bears, Wolves, Moose. Even Pigs, Mice, Sheep, more 'urban' or barn animals. But there's one species of mammal we didn't see.

Where are the Primates? Monkeys, Apes, Gorillas. Where do they fit in?

I'm also a bit of an artist, but i don't have any works to show you" Good thing too, since most of those works were lewds of his interrogators
>"An artist, that's nice!" said Judy excitedly
>Nick offered only a mild "hmph"
>"Have you ever been convicted of a crime...you know... back where you came from?"
>"Nope, I've never even had a traffic violation" said Anon, flashing a shit eating grin
>"Great!" Judy scribbled some more on her clipboard
>"What would you do if you were released today?" she continued
>"Gee I don't know, I'd have to find some place to live and I'd need a job to pay for the rent, I don't really think there's any way I'm going to get back to where I came from...."
>Nick leaned over and said "He seems to have a pretty good idea of how things work around here, he's probably good to go" to which Judy nodded, clicked her pen, and put her clipboard down on the table.
>"Well Anon, you seem to be stable and able to function in this society, so seeing as we have no reason to hold you captive, we are obliged to release. We are going to have to have a news broadcast about you so that the mayor doesn't get any more calls." said Nick
>"That's great!" said Anon, any sign of anxiety gone from his face
>"There is one other thing though" said Nick with his trademark look of smugness
>"Oh?"
>"Im gonna need you to take all your clothes off so that we can perform a cavity search"
>Every sign of anxiety returned with reinforcements on Anon's face, and his heart stood still in his throat.
>After a second of deadly silence, Judy piped in saying "Oh Nick, that joke is never funny and it never will be!"
>Nick burst into laughter regardless as he unlocked Anon's cuffs and lead him to the door.

I thought about this, but I don't know. One side of me wants them to stick to their current forumula with the city and exploring deeper into zootopian issues, and another wants them to be set out on some mission into some territory of wild animals. With no indication of what the second movie could possibly be about, I reserve any final judgements of the concepts to not dissappoint myself when neither happen, or one happens but not in my own autistic realm of 'want'.

Does it has translucency? I think I notice a bit of that near the edge of the head, which is kinda cool because the model needs fur in the ears and transparency would help a lot. I think it looks ok and with enogh work and particle tweaking you can end with great fur.

For me, the most important question is how fast does it work compared to cycles. A better render time would be welcome.

They are exactly as the Cycles version. All I did was remake the materials.
>how fast does it work compared to cycles.
Fast but not as fast. Cycles runs faster because it it a less accurate renderer. However I don't know how long it took to get to the final image's quality. Lux is a continuous renderer and doesn't stop unless given certain halt conditions or told to stop. I let this one sit overnight and when I woke it was around 1.2K samples. however samples alone are not a good indicator of speed.

>After about 10 minutes, there's a knock at the door. It's Finnick and Honey
>"That's odd" thought Anon "I thought they reworked her character to be that badger doctor"
>Nick greeted them enthusiastically "Hey there Hun! Sup lil' man?" Nick pats Finnick's head affectionately and Finnick swats his hand away. "I want you guys to meet my new buddy here, his name's Anon and he's from another dimension!" Nick gestures at Anon, who waves shyly
>"Anon's going to join us tonight for our sesh so be nice to him"
>"Fresh meat huh?" said Finnick through the massive cigar in his mouth "I like it."
>Anon gave each of them that weird high five/handshake combo and the four of them sat on Nick's couch.
>Nick took out a small baggie of bud, opened it, dumped the contents into his grinder, ground it, poured the grass onto an Animal Collective LP and carefully removed the stems and seeds. He then looked up at Anon and said "Ok Anon, you get to pick the piece we use tonight"
>Anon gazed at the many pieces on the coffee table and picked up one shaped like an elephant, with the truck being the mouthpiece.
>Nick packed the herb into the mouthpiece, pulled out a lighter, and handed everything to Anon
>"Are you sure that's gonna be enough?" asked Honey jokingly "He's a pretty big guy"
>"For you" thought Anon, except this time he said it out loud.
>"Ohhh" said Honey as she sarcastically bat her eyes at Anon
>Anon put the mouthpiece to his lips, lit the lighter against the stanky dank, and inhaled

Don't give up hope, brother. There's a way to learn these things. Imagine this - with 3 to 5 years of rigorous effort (I'm talking hardcore, true effort) you can become really good at something. When you do that, you're skills are there for life if you don't completely abandon them.

There's a way!

>Anon passes everything to Finnick, who stamps down his cigar in an ashtray before taking it
>"So um, what is this *COUGH COUGH* strand called?" asks Anon, just trying to divert attention away from his coughs.
>"Oh this stuff?" says Nick as the bong is handed to him "It's called Lusty Lamb" >Nick took a deep hit.
>Images of a nude Bellwether making bedroom eyes started to flash in Anon's mind, even though he had never much cared for her. Oh god, was it already starting to hit him? Anon could detect a difference in his state of mind. Everything he thought of felt much funnier than any of it should have been, and a big dopey grin was beginning to take shape on his face. His body felt warm, as if submerged in a bubble bath, and melodies began playing in his mind that he had never heard before.
>Honey passes the bong back to Anon, but he holds up a hand and says "I think I've...had...enough...for...now" Dammit now he sounded like Flash. Wouldn't it be funny if he was here right now? Like, would it take him a really long time to take a puff? Would it make him even slower? If an elephant used a bong, would they suck from their mouth or their trunk? Do giraffes have bongs with really long necks or do they bend WAY over to take a hit? What if...
>"Hey Anon buddy you doing ok?" asked Nick, smugger than ever
>Anon said nothing, only nodded gently
>"You stoned?"
>Anon grinned wide and nodded even harder
>"Excelleeeent" said Nick as he took another hit.

Ok, some people are naturally attuned to things than others. What the hell does that have to do with hard work? People who say "heh, I have talent! hooray!" are sometimes the ones who think they are entitled to things, or that they're perfect. In reality, most of the people in arts fields were not born with a pencil in their hand. They said "I have a goal" and worked towards it. Over years, they improved and got to where they wanted to be + more. Just because some people are quicker at things is not a deterrent to anyone with a will to achieve something, because anyone can pick up a pencil, software, welder, whathaveyou, and they can learn the skills necessary to achieve, and even outdo those who rely on their 'talent' to bring them free goodies at the expense of hard work. and dedication.

Don't lose hope, friend. What is it that you want to do?
>>

I'm not going into the effort in reducing the file size if it means losing any more quality it has already lost from dithering.

I trim the video with PowerDirector 9, I convert it to gif using ffmpeg, and crop and trim the gif using Macromedia Fireworks MX 2004; if the gif is over 4 MB, I'll make it smaller.
>>
>>83997035
Andrew pls go and take your shitty no MLT having, shit caustics renderer with you.
>>
>>83997225
The only real issue I've ever had with Cycles was its smoke and fire rendering. The caustics are fine. That's not to say that other renderers are bad, but 'ditching' cycles is a bad idea. It's no V-ray, but it's a good renderer my dude.
>>
>>83997212
I forgot to mention the gifs are running at 24 fps.

What's the point in making a Zootopia gif of its not going to capture every movement at 10 fps?
>>
>>83997326
>The caustics are fine
Okay, bud.

>but 'ditching' cycles is a bad idea
Maybe if you're new. But Cycles can barely hold a candle to other renderers on terms of output quality. The nodes get too convoluted if you're trying to make things look realistic and in the end it won't look as good.

Honestly I'd rather use NOX and that one isn't even fully supported.

Not the same anon, but I just want to get to a level of skill that I don't second guess anything I do.

I barely have any motivation for drawing, even though I want to get better, and whenever I muster up enough to try one I end up hating something about it every time.
>>
>>83998455
It's normal to dislike your work at first, but this is the key. You aren't going to become the best at whatever it is overnight. It takes time for these things, but effort is enough to bring you to greatness, anon.

>I just want to get to a level of skill that I don't second guess anything I do.

this doesn't seem like a good mindset. Artists, 3D, 2D, or even engineers, always have multiple iterations. 2D artists have thumbnails. 3D sculpters have rough blockouts of whatever creature they're making. Engineers and such have prototypes. These things change. Directors/writers go through many different ideas for plots, shots, actors, everything. Don't be afraid of change. It's a very common aspect that is essential to completing tasks. Hell, even the scientific method takes change into account for formulating theories and such.

Reminds me of what I've been working on for over 10 years; it started out in high school, making comics; after graduation, I realized what I made wasn't good enough for me, I stopped making comics and only work on this project in my head, while adding small details in a text document.

I'm not sure if it will ever finally get out of my head, but if it will, I think it would be pretty solid... I actually made it into a mental movie, which I made a soundtrack for it.

3D animation. I've given up a dunkin donuts job to put my full focus into animation. My reason for doing so is that I know there are other people out there who are dedicating themselves to the very same thing, and I can't fall behind. I need to outwork my rivals to reach the top, or to simply be good enough, and the clock is ticking. I know I don't have forever to wait and get started, so I got what I needed and got the ball rolling. What keeps me dedicated was that I know a person in my life who will amount to nothing, and i've also known people who already hit rock bottom, and I have also hit rock bottom (on account of things I couldn't control). They motivate me to not be them, so with that in mind I do my best to reach daily deadlines for time spent in software I use. I spend my spare time on this one board in this one thread simply because I loved the movie too much ( I initially stopped coming here 3 months ago because of the very same reason above).

Now I'm back and I've been convinced to use Blender again for some small stuff.
