Having lived in Japan as a foreigner, its definitely a thing that most people couldn't do forever. The language barrier is really high and even once you get over it, people still treat you like a little kid and are astounded by you doing the most basic things. It is kind of amusing at first but gets old the twentieth time people are astounded that you can use chopsticks without fucking up. On top of that you get a shitty wage and living an entire ocean away from friends & family...living there long-term is a tough sell.

The problem with teaching (speaking from my experience right now) is that to be an effective teacher is a HUGE workload and doesn't leave a lot of time to actively pursue other things. Even for summer break, you're still spending a lot of time with lesson planning for next year and professional development (which most states and districts require to keep your credentials).
