The problem with Lisa that drives her over the top for me is that she thinks she's better than everyone else despite being just as bad the moment any trouble comes her way.

The thing is, earlier on it was played with a bit like pic related. Or even in the vegetarian episode where the point was that yes, Lisa's grandstanding and being an ass to everyone around her.
But more often than not the writers believe their own hype about her. Worst one for me is the restraining order episode since Bart actually stopped bothering her like she wanted. So she goes out of her way to harass bart. Marge only has 1 actual conversation with her the whole episode because there's no real way they can get Lisa to talk to Marge without clearly being an asshole ripping their family apart. And in the end she says she can't think of 3 nice things Bart's ever done for her which just spits in the face of their relationship.

The episode that Marge completely unbearable for me was the one where she got MMA banned or whatever simply because she found it distasteful on a personal level.
Not only was the episode extremely poorly written and the ending an enormous plot hole (lol, maternal instincts beat decades of martial arts training) but throughout the entire episode it is never even once hinted that Marge is in the wrong, in fact it's basically treated as if she is 100 percent correct in selfishly imposing her personal morals on the entire world.
Though she was always a generally garbage character for me, generally always either doing nothing or ruining everyone's good time.
In modern Simpsons I would say that Bart is an example of a poorly handled character (his personality flits from ultimately caring and misunderstood but failing to understand the consequences of his actions to straight-up sociopath from episode to episode) whereas Marge is an example of a generally terrible character all around who occasionally becomes bearable for a while (usually when there's no morals involved and she's just being used as a straight man or a board to bounce lame parent jokes off of by one of the kids).
