I think the implication is that Lis actually uses the mushrooms all the time to make the house "how she likes it"
When Katie uses them however the hell she wants, there's nothing WRONG with it per se, as in there are no cosmic repercussions or anything, but it fucks with your life in ways you won't expect because "be careful what you wish for". The "rules" are probably just Lis' way of looking out for Katie.
Also, at some point you start to go against the house spirit's desire for how the house should be; I imagine if Katie had kept going, even without the witch, Lis would have made her life hell until she quit using them

Thanks OP. Wanted to re-iterate, /co/ doesn't hate Seconds. I am not sure it hates Scott Pilgrim either,other than hating hipster comics.... because they are popular... which is an irony of hating indie things because they are popular with hipsters, while ourselves feeling justified in having taste by not hating it because it is, as stated, popular.
Personally I like his book Seconds more. I should reread that again.

There's a shitton of cameos if you know where to look. It's not just limited to Scott Pilgrim too, but indie comic artists and the likes too. Dude with bun/shaved sides is the drawing assistant for this book. Somewhere in the first few chapters you can see the people behind Johnny Wander in the restaurant too.
