Not really, but the original TV specials (1980s) and to a lesser degree, Garfield and Friends TV cartoon (late 1980s) were pretty damn clever.
Davis sold Garfield as an all-ages character all through the 1980s with a lot of mature humor, thus Nine Lives and a lot of jokes in the strip that kids won't get.
But after he launched the SatAM cartoon, he could not market more adult-themed Garfield to save his life: no matter how good the SatAM cartoon itself actually was, the mere fact that it was viewed as a SatAM cartoon damaged the brand with adults.
This first led to the death of a planned all ages Garfield feature (which was still made as a book, the excellent Garfield's Judgment Day) and then, much later to the deliberate attempts to dumb Garfield down, such as the Bill Murray Garfield movies and the "cartoon world" CGI movies.
