"When you look at my movies it’s always the regular Joe Schmo that’s the unlikely hero. A lot of Marvel movies, they show people in funny suits running around. I don’t like people in capes. Yeah, this auteur is so fucking grounded and realistic that he tried to make a movie about the Stonewall riot, and it was the biggest piece of trash ever. I'm fucking gay and that movie, directed by a gay man, made me wish the studio had just found any mediocre straight guy to direct it instead. First of all, holy shit, I'm getting sick of this fucking mindset for comics in general. This is literally the mindset that led to all those shitty cape movies in the early-mid 00s

Second, The only one of those that do that is really Thor

Third, where does this mindset even come from? Didn't Snyder say something like this? You know, you'd never hear someone like Nolan say some shit like this. Even Spielberg when he talked about the comic book movie going out of fashion someday never commented on the style of the movie itself. He even has a favorite in GOTG

>>
>>83903292
True his track record is utter shit.

But at the same time you have to realize, it was his brain child, he knows what's right for it, and hopefully for the reboot what will and won't work. Think Fury Road, in anyone else's hands who knows what the finished product could have turn out to be, but Miller somehow managed to make a gem, even with plot tones that drive half the boards on this site up the wall.

I'll be the last to defend Emmerich, but sometimes the original creator does know best, but for now it's all hypothetical cause he's focusing on Jeff Goldblum vs Aliens 2: Independence Day in June.
>>

Historically, continentals have always had a fundamentally different social system to anglos.
The peasantry - which stretched from Portugal to Japan - stopped at the English Channel and instead you had a thriving property market stretching back at least to the 1200s.
Americans took that individualistic mindset and magnified it.
>>
>>83902309
>When you look at my movies it’s always the regular Joe Schmo that’s the unlikely hero
First of all, that's not even true. Many of his protagonists are scientists and military guys.
Second of all, plenty of Marvel protagonists have been Joe Schmo unlikely heroes, like Ant-Man.
Third of all, the main character being a Joe Schmo unlikely hero doesn't make it better. Most good movies aren't about regular everymen.
>>
>>83903105
>>

Well, I might not have everyone agreed with me, but ID4 was a good movie.

...Stargate the movie was hardly a gem. It was an alright action movie, but it was dumb as a rock and the humor was awkward or unfunny. SG1 was the best thing to ever happen to the franchise, hell the only reason WHY it's a franchise and not forgotten.
>>
>>83903795
Sorry I misread that, you didn't call Stargate a gem - but I stand by my point. Nobody remembers Kurt Russel's Jack O'Neil. People give a shit about RDA's Jack O'Neill.
>>
>>83902512
It's the collapse of the hollywood system they knew and loved, and they rage against it.

It use to be that actors and directors sold movies. People like Will Smith, they go to see his movies every summer, everyone makes money, everyone wins. Now the power has shifted towards characters and adaptations and sequels. People don't care about seeing a Chris Evans movie, they want to see Captain America. There are very few true movie stars anymore, that can carry a movie all on their own.

As you can imagine, this scares the piss out of them.
>>
>>83903927
It's true, I only refer to Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth as Loki, and Thor.

You guys are aware that ID4 was predicted to flop because it was a cast of nobodies, right?

Yes, including Will Smith. all he had for him at that point was the Fresh Prince and Independance Day was the movie that actually launched his career. Many actually predicted that his casting alone was proof of how little hope that movie had.

Eimerich's movie doesn't particularly stand out by its popular cast. (they don't particularly stand out at all, desu).

Stargate and ID4 are the only two good movies I can think of him.
>>
>>83904508

I still don't get the idea that Euros couldn't into superheroes, when the FUNDAMENTAL moral of the entire genre is effectively Noblesse Oblige. It's Spider-Man's Mantra, but it basically applies to every superhero.

Is it because Europe had actual nobility, and has all but completely rejected it, or what?

Spielberg:

>Steven Spielberg on Wednesday predicted an "implosion" in the film industry is inevitable, whereby a half dozen or so $250 million movies flop at the box office and alter the industry forever. What comes next -- or even before then -- will be price variances at movie theaters, where "you're gonna have to pay $25 for the next Iron Man, you're probably only going to have to pay $7 to see Lincoln." He also said that Lincoln came "this close" to being an HBO movie instead of a theatrical release.

Also said eventually superhero movies would go the way of the western and die out, but that they could come back around again.
>>
>>83904682

ehh that's not really hating on them. i'm reading it as more of a shot at hollywood now where almost everything is a tentpole or cheap indie stuff with almost no mid range movies.

Here's Verhoeven, it's much of the same

>“I’m not positive about the further development of all [this] science-fiction stuff,” Verhoeven said. “I have a feeling that everything has been said and done and I think we should go back to a bit more normality. All these big superheroes and whatever, I don’t know what dream this is of the United States, but I feel that we lost contact completely with normal people, and that the story of us is more interesting than that of a superhero.”

>“Right now, Hollywood doesn’t fit with my artistic sensibilities,” he continued. “I feel that in France and in Europe, there is enormous respect for filmmakers. This doesn’t happen in Hollywood. For us, it’s hard to shoot there because they do not want what we want. There, all films must be visible to the greatest number. Money rules everything. The studios have abandoned the quality. Everything is smooth, it idles. They try to avoid controversy.”

It's the same mindset as Michael Bay, of not making any effort with a movie because "lol its dumb anyway." There's a kind of inverse snobbery at its root.

Marvel's movies are made by people who respect the characters and source material. That's why even the weaker Marvel movies shit on almost every Hollywood capeshit made in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s.
Kevin Smith had it right when he said we are getting comic movies which actually resemble the source material whereas in the past you had to accept shitty adaptations which were often insulting.

If you are making a movie try to tell an interesting story, and make it as good as you can, even if it's a film about a talking hamster, at least make an effort ffs.
>>
>>83904682
That's not so much shittalking superheroes so much as realistically assessing the Blockbuster Movie as fairly toxic to the industry, from the man who created the Blockbuster.
>>
>>83903597
Basically, the likes of Scott, Wanda, Peter, Steve, Sam, and Clint are, underneath their powers, ordinary people who find themselves in extraordinary situations.

>“I’m not positive about the further development of all [this] science-fiction stuff,” Verhoeven said. “I have a feeling that everything has been said and done and I think we should go back to a bit more normality.

Almost nothing has, Hollywood is clinically incapable of assessing the impact of technology on society.
We don't have a single movie that shows what the world would look like after self-driving cars let alone one where a computer algorithm is the one reading your resume and making decisions about whether or not to hire you or one where a phone app can function as 90% accurate lie detector.

it cost 50 million, that means the marketing really was 300 million and a movie has to make 4x its budget in the first 3 hours of its domestic release.

Looks like the Rock's career is offically over

And David Cronenberg.

He sounded pretty sour that the TDKR overshadowed the movie he had released at the time TDKR was at the theaters.

He's also a pedophile.

This was the whole mindset behind 90's comic movies.

They were trying really hard to adapt comics, that were not traditional superheroes so we had shit like Judge Dredd, The Mask, Blade, Crow, Mystery Men, Tank Girl etc.

And then they tried to take the cape out of other comic series and adapt them as weird action movies like Steel, that Superman one where he was not supposed to fly wear a cape or wear blue, the X-Men movies with the black leather,

Batman and Spawn were the only ones that came out without too much changed, and that's not saying much.

All these old fucks, I can't wait for like a Scorsese to make an awesome Superhero flick.

course that won't happen bc they won't let people with vision near the movies but w/e i can dream

check out VOD for a bunch of cool small movies you've never heard of, way of the future

>that Superman one where he was not supposed to fly wear a cape or wear blue

Was that the one where his suit was a symbiote kept in a Pringles can or the one where he fights a giant spider?

it's that they feel shame being based on comic books cause comic books were aimed at kids and you can't take stuff for kids seriously!

DC has been struggling with this for-fucking-ever.

also might be another reason something like Legion's been benched, that's pure goofy sci fi comics fun. not just them look around for any other big goofy silver age team around today, Metal Men, Doom Patrol, Jimmy Olsen.

It was a bad Godzilla movie. It was a fine remake of The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms.

A bigger part of it is the director's ego. Thy want to be the "Creator!" and that is not happening when they are just putting someone else's work to film. So they alter shit with the whole thought process of "I can do this better, I am a muuuuch greater creative genius than the original writers!" and they get to work adapting shit. Just so they can make it somewhat their baby and claim they improved things or dropped all the shit they did not personally care for.

>Think Fury Road

Returning the original creator to the project doesn't make it good. See Prometheus.
