new mutant syndrome.
>>
Why are black mutants that aren't Storm so lame?
>>
>>83886348
Because everyone wants to create the popular black male character that gets used forever in all adaptations so no writer actually bothers to use the others except maybe Sunspot and Bishop.
>>
Who are they?
>>
>>83886428
2004-era New Mutants. Their book relaunched as New X-Men after Morrison left the old New X-Men and it resumed its old title, X-Men.

House of M came and apparently the higher ups didn't let new mutants writers know in advance, so when it was over with they had a cast that was half depowered, their main plot point for the conclusion was actually broken.

After avengers vs x-men, x-men editorial stopped pushing them as a team.

There werent part of WaTX support characters.

The only appeared in amazing x-men and that because Yost was writing that book.

Now elixir is dead and hellion is doing whatever in Atilan, i dont see them having a reunion anytime soon.

How did this happen ? New x-men had good sales, between 40k-50k until the last issue

I actually really like the idea behind most of their powers, especially Prodigy. But I've only read the New Mutants mini prequel so my opinion is not valid.

Elixir was alright but too OP that they kept killing him

/co/ actually reads comics, so we see series after series of a well-written Cyclops.

Mainstream pop culture knows Cyclops from the X-Men movies and the 90's cartoon show. Neither showed Cyclops in a positive light. If someone adapted any of the major Cyclops stories over the last 15 years, perceptions would change.

>>
>>83886225
Wallflower was the best actually.

And what went wrong was M-Day. Literally destroyed the entire concept and Yost & Kyle seemingly decided "hey we gotta show that growing up is hard and the world is dangerous let's kill them all".

Has Sam ever even brought up Jay's death?
>>
>>83886709
Well no, it's a little worse than that. The writers knew about M-Day and wrote their plans for after that which included X-23 being added (she was an editorially mandated character, Yost/Kyle didn't bring her in on their own), a story about them going to Nova Roma and squaring away all of the retarded continuity regarding Magma and her true identity IIRC and Elixir becoming a villain out of his grief and desire to try and reverse what happened on M-Day in the Magneto "going too far" sense.

They had issues written and everything I believe and then editorial told them right before the end of the M-Day arc that they were off the book. Basically around the same time the writer change was announced is the same time the original writers learned about it. I can't remember if it's the Yearbook Special or NXM #19 that came out last but yeah, they got the rug pulled out from under them and didn't even get a chance to wrap things up.
>>
>>83886570
Strictly speaking, you should start with New Mutants volume 2, then Academy X, then New X-Men.
>>
>>83887916
IIRC it was basically the same reason Karma was written out of New Mutants for like two years. They thought she was too powerful and an insta-win button so they killed her off to get rid of her which had the bonus of acting as motivation for Elixir.

I feel like this is the major reason I can't get into X-Men. You're constantly having all these new characters introduced and every time a new writer comes in they're discarded. It's like the roster's constantly shifting and everyone who didn't come in before 1999 is only good for cannon fodder.

>>
>>83888772
Not true.

House of M was dropped on them without warning THEN they were told that they had to drop all of their storylines and basically go with M Day and characters being depowered and shit.

The writer quit on the spot and the Yearbook was hastily greenlighted as a fig leaf to keep them on the book through the House of M tie-in arc while they rushed to get a new creative team lined up and to keep them from blabbing to the media the ending to House of M.

They did the House of M arc AND kept their mouths shut, so they got to do the Yearbook after their last issue, which basically was them wrapping up as many of their storylines as they could before Yost/Kyle took over, since they didnt' know what the hell the two would do with the book.

Y/K then basically depowered 75% of the cast and went on a killing spree, slaughtering the characters, much to the horror of the original writer, who was pissed off that Y/K didn't give a fuck about ANYTHING that came before them and retooled the entire book around X23 and Wither going evil.

They made up for that imbalance in New Mutants. Oddly progressive for the time, now that I think about it.

Well this predictable deterioration in the morals of /co/nversation has got me to thinking:

>>
>>83888865
>They thought she was too powerful and an insta-win button
Which in turn ment, it never ever worked like it was supposed to. "Oh no, this guy is attacking us! I will possess him! BUT HE'S SO POWERFUL!!!!! I CAN'T HOLD HIM ANYMORE!"
Alternatively she made herself vulnerable by doing it and got punched in the face. She was so powerful that she was ultimately useless. It's like how Storm often just flies up at the start of the fight and charges lightning to put the entire enemy team out of action only to catch the first shot and be unconscious for the rest of the fight. At least I've seen that a lot in cartoons. Don't think comics did that quite as much.

They were surprisingly resilient. House of M came along and fucked them over and they had so many dangling storylines just ended. But they stuck the landing and they lasted long enough for Craig Kyle and Chris Yost take over and insert their creation X-23. But one more lame crossover happened and they couldn't stick it.

More of them lingered on than I would have expected.
>>
>>83895569
A lot of people like the post House of M run, too, despite the fact that it is sort of despicable, when you look at it. They used that horrible stuff to actually do character focus on those who remained and it's also the only reason why any X-Men book/event book of the time was even believable.
>>
>>83889182
>>83890911

He died in Cullen Bunn's current run on Uncanny X-men, however, literally just before he died, Bunn made Monet have a big song and dance about the fact Elixir was exhibiting new, widerspread application of his powers and it seems which indicates to me that he probably has plans to bring Josh back, because otherwise, it's a fairly redundant reveal.

> Fingers crossed anyway
>>
>>83896794
>But one more lame crossover happened and they couldn't stick it.
Messiah Complex was fine. And the fact that they just dropped the book afterwards was probably due to Kyle/Yost just dropping the book to head for an even edgier book.

As to why they didn't try getting any of the other writers to continue it - I don't fucking know. Back then Marvel actually had a pretty decent stable of them and I could've seen several of them continue it. Carey for example.
>>
>>83896972
>which indicates to me that he probably has plans to bring Josh back, because otherwise, it's a fairly redundant reveal.
Yeah, but how good of a writer is Bunn really?
Usually he's a pretty mediocre or sometimes even bad writer and the only thing that really uplifts his X-Men stuff to being fairly decent is that he knows and can build upon previous continuity.

I'm still half expecting him to just do a terrible fucking plot line out of nowhere.

So finding Chekhov's gun in one of his comic wouldn't surprise me at all.
>>
>>83887037

It's not a "shit show", but it is synergy fail.
The Dark Riders were way overdue for a death scene, all they did was cement Magneto's team as badass, and Dark Angel is in the weeds canon. What casual is going to pick that up and continue reading?
Kid'pocalypse falling down the Egyptian wonderland rabbit hole for some soul searching has nothing to do with anything movie or O5-Men, so I don't even know what that writer's doing there.
And Storm's team lost more children in a stupid meaningless timetravel adventure to the Apocalypse future that as of yet has no full-on Apocalypse in his prime goodness. So what was the point?
Why not just let the movie go do it's own thing and keep the comics their own thing?
