You simply couldn't create anything but the most obliquely-coded gay character in comics before the 1980s, and it was still rare before the early 2000s (Marvel officially had a ban on it until about then, but managed to sneak a few in). But that period is when all of the most important and influential characters were created. So why not make a few of them queer?
