Let me tell you about Charlie Vickers. Now, he started out as an actor, who played Green Lantern on a TV show. But he fell, like many men, to the temptations of that life. One day, when he was unavailable for his role, his brother stepped in, only to be gunned down by an alien crimelord, who thought he was shooting Hal Jordan.
Now, most men would probably despair, and wallow in self-pity. But Charlie? He demanded that Hal give him a GL ring so that he could get revenge. And in a battle where countless GLs died, Charlie persevered and got his vengeance. Now, he had had his revenge, he could have just gone home, but that'd be too boring for Charlie.
He stayed in the Corps, but did he get to guard 2814? OF COURSE NOT. Charlie was assigned to a sector filled with the weirdest life-forms imaginable, nothing even close to humans. And, naturally, he started to despair, but instead of going full Emerald Twilight, he began to empathize with his new protectorates, realizing their thanks was all he needed, and becoming a vital Corps member.
And when Hal destroyed the Corps, did Vickers take that as a cue to go home? Nope, he went straight to the next cosmic police Corps (the Darkstars), and it was with them, on a planet foreign to him, where he perished, fighting the son of Darkseid himself.
Charlie Vickers never went home.

All the Guardians except Ganthet got killed when they had a last ditch effort in Emerald Twilight to create one more Power Ring. When Kyle later came back as Ion to restore the central power battery back to life to restart the Corps he created new Guardians for Ganthet but they were little babies. For the remainder of Kyle's run up to Rebirth, these new baby Guardians were learning from Ganthet how to do what they were supposed to do, but in Rebirth there is a small panel where you can see they just got aged up to older version of themselves to better fit what Johns wanted as a return to the old. This especially makes the romance between Sayd and Ganthet hilarious because technically he raised her.
