>Hot Spot

Didn't he have a different name in the comics that was "too controversial" for modern audiences? Like Jihadi or something.

Regardless on your opinions of the actual character, "Slade" is a lot cooler of a name than "Deathstroke" in my opinion.
>>
>>83851461
>Didn't he have a different name in the comics that was "too controversial" for modern audiences?

"Joto". Which is meaningless to non-Mexicans and didn't need to be changed for the English version.

But the Teen Titans cartoon was super PC and played it safe wherever possible.

>We can't call him DEATHstroke! That name is too violent! We don't want kids to hear the word DEATH! It's scary!

So Slade it is, then.
>>
>>83851578
>>83851568

Didn't they restore his name to "Deathstroke" in most of the foreign dubs?

It was only the English version of TT that thought the name "Deathstroke" was too intense for kids or something.

With characters like Tony, Hank, Wanda, T'challa they show the flaws of those characters without ever losing sight of their humanity and that they are at their core good people.

The comics just make them into psychos or villains for shock value and then end up with a mess.
Ironically, the MCU, who you might expect to be more wreckless and unsubtle due to the time constraints of the medium, are in fact more considerate of character and nuance than their comic book counterparts.

Actually, he was both. It is likely he was part of a cooperative agreement between the Soviet government and Hydra, as his handlers at the beginning of Civil War were Russian and Natasha knew of him.
>>
>>83859242
The Russian angle was a lot more fleshed out in Civil War. Still canonically Hydra, but wearing soviet uniforms, in a Soviet bunker, in a Soviet territory, speaking Russian.

It doesn't take a lot to extrapolate that Hydra had cells within Russia that they used to create the Winter Soldier program. Origins and imagery are preserved.

I like MCU Pym because whatever misadventures he had with SHIELD decades ago are firmly in the past, and relegated to the mentor role in the cinematic universe. (Plus I like Scott Lang's portrayal of Ant-Man more.)

One of the good things AoU did is have Tony be responsible for Ultron----which gave Pym and Lang even more reason to hate the Starks. It just sets up some interesting drama for future films (and obviously how Civil War played out)

That is literally the meaning. The term comes from a satirical piece of Star Trek fanfiction about a new ensign named Mary Sue, who was the best at everything and all the male crew members wanted to court her, etc.

It doesn't mean "character who is overpowered/someone I dislike" it means "obvious author self-insert who is fawned over in the story".

Examples of legit Mary Sues:

>Kira Yamato and Lacus Clyne from Gundam SEED/SEED DESTINY
>Literally Neil Breen in any of his films
>Coagula from Pollack's Doom Patrol
>Pretty much the lead from any preachy webcomic out there too

Although you can be an author self-insert without being a Mary Sue. Like the protagonist of Stephen King's Misery, who was an author stand-in, but was pretty much put through hell by Annie Wilkes, and therefore isn't a Mary Sue.
>>
When she's not moping over daddy issues or going through the crisis of murdering people, she's the only salvagable part of Arrow left besides crossovers and occasionally the Lance family members.

Then again, Mia always felt a bit less important compared to Red Arrow/Arsenal.
>>
>>83864096

And what makes Anti-Venom even more worse is that with Pat dead, Eddie eventually got the Toxin symbiote after losing the anti-venom symbiote, making the whole anti-venom shit absolutely pointless IMO.

Oh, and I'm gonna throw just a LITTLE bit of leeway for Anti-venom, because at least Anti-Venom also was able to cure people of any sort of ailment they have, so it doubles as a Punishing healing symbiote which is sorta cool.
>>
>>83864590
The attribution of "author self-insert" is arbitrary though since most authors freely admit to putting a little bit of themselves in most of their characters, and a lot of characters could easily be hidden or indirect self-insert power fantasies. Like Sasuke Uchiha fits every standard definition of a Mary Sue and is one of the most common examples of one from all the way back in 1999. But just because his name isn't Kishimoto doesn't mean he's suddenly not a mary sue since he isn't a direct self-insert of the character.

Going by a stupid strict purist technical definition, none of your examples are right either. The Star Trek Mary Sue definition states that the definition of Mary Sue is a character within a fanfiction who fits those terms. Not just in any media.
>>
>>83864503
Relegating Pym to an old shield agent in the 60s and 70s is fine with me but I'm literally 'not muh ultron' with Tony making ultron. Also that design was ass, the character was a decent adaptation of ultron's core principles but that face was retarded.

you take Ultron away from Pym you take away one of his core elements as far as I'm concerned. It's like having Tony Stark on hand but someone else invents the iron man suit. Honestly as fond as I am of some of the MCU stuff to come out I'm not a real fan of the team up movies. I can rewatch Iron Man, Antman Captain America and all the others but the original Avengers flick and AoU are really forgetable.

you pretty much lose me from the get go by adapting civil war into a film. Though I'd kill to see a video game based on Avengers Academy or The Avengers Initiative.

I liked how Ultron had daddy issues with Stark. It's separate from the comics, yeah, but having Ultron be an extension of Stark's personality was good.

AoU failed so hard, to me, because they wasted Spader and RDJ. If 35%+ of the movie was devoted to MCU's Ultron character arc and toxic relationship with Tony (eventually culminating in Ultron's conclusion that in order to save humanity it has to brute force it's evolution/development through cataclysms) ----the whole thing would have been better.

It would have been better if the movie was treated more like Iron Man 3.5, much like how Civil War was Avengers 2.5.

That, and cut out that wretched farm subplot. The destruction of cities on the "West African Coast">>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>that fucking farm

Ultron in the comics has endless daddy issues with Pym, that's why he's a pym character. They have history. All they did with Ultron in that film was give him an awful face, transpose his relationship with Pym onto Stark and call it a day.

the performance was decent but the concept pisses me off.

I hate to say it, but Peter should have stayed dead. Or his counciousness should have been banished to another timeline, or something.

I liked it more when Doc Ock was Spiderman and running Parker Industries
Also, pic related

I gotta be honest, I agree. Not because Superior was good or anything like that, but it took the character of Spiderman into a different and unique direction.

Batman Beyond is my favorite bat canon for pretty much every character. Terry deserves to be a part of mainstream comic canon. If kryptonians can travel space, time, and dimensions to become important characters with their own comics, so can Terry!

I get that, and if Pym was introduced as some rival scientist as early as Iron Man 1 (or better yet, if Pym was a main character in Iron Man 2---instead of the forgettable mess that was Iron Man 2) I wouldn't be defending Ultron as Tony's child.

But since 3+ movies preceding AoU went out of the way portray Tony's psyche in the neurotic, egotistical, impulsive mess that it is/was-----and the names "Osborn", "Richards", and "Pym" weren't even name dropped in any corner of the MCU(including Netflix+AoS, which thrive on the lesser known story lines) ----his and Ultron's characterization makes sense. Not in the comics, but in the movies.

But I don't want to beat a dead horse, AoU was a turd with small, isolated, redeemable scenes. I'm not denying the movie as a whole left much to be desired
>>
>>83863961
I loved Pym in EMH. It felt like the writers worked hard for each character to have set personality traits and goals that were made crystal clear to the viewers, early on. And in Pym's case, I'd say it was needed the most and done the best.
Ah dammit. That series was SO good. And that image of M.O.D.O.K. with a giant raised Kirby style hand reaching for the Cosmic Cube... God, I never laughed so hard at a cartoon before, ever. It was just as gold as Brock Samson killing a guy with just his butt cheeks.
>>
>>83864883
Why they couldn't just do that Pym created Ultron-1 and then he shut it down because how dangerous that it will be but Hydra managed to save it. And then Stark revive Ultron
>>

Too bad Terry was sacrificed to the alter of Tim in the ongoing Beyond comics. (Which is weird because Old Tim was an actual character in Return of the Joker)

NeoGotham just felt so alive, and the idea that so many characters from BTAS/JLU met a bad end or retired by the time of Beyond was pretty damn balsy on the writers part.

Also, shit like "Talia", Old Bane, and Freeze were great conclusions to those characters' story lines.

nah Spock was one of the blandest, stupidest things to happen to peter in a long time. He was doing just fine after civil war but OMD destroyed multiple decades of character development. The company running and shit is nice but you didn't need Superior for that you just needed a writer who was willing to let peter make some fucking money.

Honestly the 'new and interesting direction' wore out it's welcome 3 or so issues in. All slott does is take stories that are worth 2 or 6 issues and then stretch them out till you're sick of them.
>>
>>83865456
I don't want to admit it because I hate the very idea of Ultron being Tony's production but that was decently done in the movie, everything else not so much.

either way I hope it's a plot that gets dropped and forgotten. PRobably will be.

Rather see Kang on the big screen anyway.

Specifically their relationship. I think it's a lot better than it was introduced in the comics. I wish they had more episodes to flesh it out.
>>
>>83865558
what makes you think the people they had Editing and Writing that book even watched Beyond? Honestly I find the whole thing baffling. Here we have terry in his own ongoing, a book designed to bring in fans of the cartoon. Oh I know lets kill off the Bat Man that people came here to see and replace him with Tim DRake in a convoluted and poorly conieved time travel plot. Surely no one will get disgusted and drop the book?
>>
>>83868850
she was the worst thing about that season tho
>>
>>83868882
Nah, I think Karen was easily the worst part of the season.

If they had fleshed out their flashbacks and were less break up-make up about their relationship, and had Daredevil's conflict with killing kept mostly with Punisher and instead focused on finally finding someone he can relate to with Elektra it would have been better. I thought her actress was great though and they had enough chemistry to pull it off.

Spock not working out was more due to the writer than the character.

I mean obviously it was never going to be permanent, but it had so much more potential, and literally every appearance by other writers was better than Slott's awful bullshit. If someone competent had written Spock instead of Slott, I wouldn't have minded if he stuck around a lot longer, one way or another.

But wasn't most of the reason for because they made Spock even more of a gigantic joke of a character who could never carry his own series? They just turned up the being an unrepentant asshole no one could stand factor. And legitimately because he's a terrible person, not because of the usual "Peter can't keep his fucking mouth shut" reasons. They also just had everyone shit on him, and the punchline was basically "hah, Spock trying to be Spider-Man is a terrible idea and he's a shitty person everyone makes fun of." They were fun to read, yeah, but I could never see the enjoyable Spock we got leading any sort of series of something like Superior Foes.

Not really got material for the lead Spider-Man series.

He's a shit writer who spends too long on a given idea - so we get even more of his shit writing.

Literally every Spider-Man megacrossover, from Spider-Island to Superior Spider-Man to Spider-Verse to whatever, all of them have leapt up in quality when another writer held the Spider-reigns.

When Kaine crossed over with Spider-Man, the difference in quality was visible from one issue to the next. It was horrifying.

Stark is even fucking worse in the MCU than in the comics, to be honest. You can at least hand-wave some of his dumber decisions by saying he was just drunk or some such, and he even almost had a fucking point in Civil War because everyone was fucking up ar ound that time.

But in the MCU, most of the bad shit that happens is his fault and his only answer is to blame everyone else.

On that matter I liked Friend or Foe Mysterio.
He was an international criminal mastermind powerful enough to be a thorn in Nick Fury's and S.H.I.E.L.D' side. He kidnapped and brainwashed several Spider-Man villains, led a huge army of hard-light holograms or whatever those things were and apparently was rich enough to live in a big, well-stuffed mansion in Nepal.

He wasn't much of a character because that's a kid game, but I appreciate the effort on making him more of a threat.
