The first two Toy Story villains can be excused for nearly everything by the fact that they, and everyone else, didn't know toys were alive. Al committed petty theft once, Sid was a jerk to his sister. You've done worse. They made the right call in making the Prospector the real bad guy.

He actually sacrificed his remaining army because he felt that if he just lost after letting so many people die for him that it would be an immensely more evil thing to do.

So all things considered he isn't as much of a traitor as people make him out to be, he just committed ego implosion to make the dream real.

I would not steal it, because it's not fucking mine. I'd actually tell the family that it was very rare and sought-after and that they're lucky to have it, and should consider getting it repaired.

If they were actually selling it I would buy it at the price they had, because that's their fault for not researching, but if they're not gonna sell it anyway I'm not gonna just fucking take it from them.

Griffith was always a power hungry douchebag with no scruples whatsoever. The only person he actually betrayed was Guts, the rest were all kindling for the fire.

>because he felt that if he just lost after letting so many people die for him that it would be an immensely more evil thing to do

No, he just thought he'd come this far what were a few more bodies? Morality didn't really come into it. Everything in his head is him rationalizing the Sacrifice and the God Hand nudging him towards it. The actual impetus doesn't come until he sees Guts and he realizes he's the only person who's ever come close to turning him away from his dream. And then he decides he has to die.

Increased happiness is analogous to reduced suffering.
If I were 2000 years old, I'd be an epicurean.

The fact remains, to increase happiness is the correct course of action for a society, and for a person, when he has a chance.

The peace he creates (which may have all been undone by Rorshach, whoops!) was built entirely on a lie. This is a problem because humanity didn't come together by working out any kind of solution. The alliance they formed was one out of fear and necessity.

You may think, "that's doesn't matter, they came together and that's the goal," but mankind doesn't grow from an experience like that. Neither side decided to toss away arms after resolving issues with one another; no, they decided that the should aim those arms at a mutual threat. The situation is akin to military defense pact, which isn't formed out of some kind of cultural or political foundation. The major forces here are still diametrically opposed to one another with all the built-in biases. This isn't a learning experience for anyone.

Sure, Oz may have created a ceasefire and one could say that it may open the door to positive exchanges, but that's a leap of faith. While preparing to combat more galactic threats, what's stopping from these world powers from still making global plays like installing puppet states or supplying revolutionaries? The threat of cosmic horrors wrecking the planet? How is that suddenly scarier than terrestrial powers wrecking the planet with nuclear arms? What happens if someone connects all the dots? Rorschach figured it out, and he's not exactly a hyper-genius, just driven.

There are too many variables that Ozzy is playing with here, and for him to deem millions of lives worth his leap of faith is a totally morally bankrupt action.

What I don't understand is how one can objectively and accurately assess utility in any given situation outside of the obvious. You can argue reasoning and logic, but what about factors that are outside of your knowledge? If these unknown factors were to affect the outcome negatively, then through your actions you failed to achieve maximum utility and therefore acted immorally.

One could argue intention, but I thought intention meant squat in consequentialist theories.

But that's assuming utilitarianism is objectively the best we currently have. A deontologist, a virtue theorist, and an egoist could easily make the same claim.

It is perhaps a good rule of thumb, but it does not provide justification in my eyes to do shit that most people would find horrendous in the name of utility.

If enslaving a smaller group of people to serve a majority would seemingly cause an increase in total utility as opposed to not enslaving them, would it be morally obligatory to enslave the small group? If feeding a cannibal with three suicidal people would cause an increase in total utility, is it morally obligatory to cook up some mystery meat?

What kind of moral theory provides answers that most people would perceive as "wrong"? Are those people idiots from your perspective for not seeing your "Golden Path"?

>Are those people idiots from your perspective for not seeing your "Golden Path"?
No, of course not.
Everyone has a right to their own belief. Many smart people choose their own end.

But the fact remains that the right choice is the one that ends beneficial to all.
If there was one person to decide whether cannibalism would be ok for a small group, if it benefited the whole, I'd allow it.

The whole is all that matters. Survival, happiness, necessity.

I hate to admit it, but my ethics demand it.
Slavery is OK so long as the whole benefits more from each bit of misery than each bit of misery detracts from the whole.
I am still human. Slavery abhors me. But if that is what is required, then so be it.

Personal feelings are always secondary. Even if you hate yourself, you must do the right thing.
I have to believe that, or I wouldn't be in my line of work.

Think about this.
Do you believe that everything is measurable?
There may be things about the universe we can't measure now, but you believe there can be a machine that measures everything, right?

That's substance monism. Everything can be measured and seen by some sort of machine or person.

That also means that there is no free will.
That seems like a leap of logic, but it's not.

If you can measure every atom in the universe (as you must believe if you don't think there some kind of soul or ghost layer), then you must think you can predict interactions.

If you think you can measure and predict everything, you must believe that everything follows how everything has been laid out.

Even your brain has been predicted. You're just made of atoms. And if you believe that atoms are made of real stuff, then you must believe that they can be predicted.

If your brain atoms can predicted, then your thoughts are predetermined

What I'm getting at is that we can't leave things to chance.
If we do, then we let things fall apart in the future.
If we try to shape things, then we have the chance of making it right.

We don't really, since free will is an illusion, but we must act like it isn't.

The bottom line is that unless you believe in God and the Soul, you must believe that everything is already set and determined.

Then it means that we must act like a good person. We don't have a choice but we do. Because the illusion is so strong.

What is the whole? The universe? Humans are marvelous cooperators, because cooperation within subgroups is such a great strategy for the grander competition. At the highest scale that's what it all is, competition, the red queen's race. The universe is hard at work accelerating the production of entropy, and nothing works better than localized order at producing entropy. Localized order is what defines life, civilization and even intelligence itself. And they are set in ruthless competition against eachother, the laws of thermodynamics compel that they must eat each other, with no grander purpose than to maximize entropy production. I worship the expansion of complex localized order, it's form decided by forces beyond mortal command.

Localized order reverses entropy. That alone must make you worship life.
Admittedly, I'm a human chauvinist. Given competition, I'd advocate genocide. Humans are great beings.

But in the meantime, with what we have, we must follow what I advocate.
How else will get to the point where we conquer the stars?
Where we make probes capable of von Neumanning themselves across the galaxy?
>>
>>83841928
>Are you religious?
No.
But doesn't that lead to a kind of situation like a tree falling in the woods? Say, hypothetically, that our planet and the human races as a whole dies out before we could measure *everything*. There never is another species that advances beyond our own before dying out as well. Does that mean that what we did not measure does not exist?

I guess I'm arguing potential knowledge versus objective knowledge. I guess it depends on how we define everything: an umbrella term that grows as knowledge is gained, or a term for all things in and outside of said knowledge.

Can we correct this bullshit right now?

The Empire was NOT racist. It was human-first, so species-ist would be a better world for it.

And this is a good thing. What fucking world would you want to live in, what GALAXY would you want to live in, where humans were treated as, at best, an upstart species, and at worst, a pest?

If we go off of purely Disney canon, then Palpatine saved the Senate, and indirectly, the galaxy, from a corrupt system, and the Jedi.

We all like to think the Jedi were good, but in reality, the Jedi were fucked up, and fucked up BAD. By Episode 3, they were about to commit an unlawful coup of the galactic-wide government because there was SUSPICION that Palatine may be a Sith. The Jedi became radical religious extremists who were threatening the stability of the galaxy in the middle of a civil war.

Palpatine not only saved the galaxy from these extremists, but he also united the galaxy by ending the worst war of the last 1000 years, and while yes, there were problems with some outer rim worlds, the reforms he made brought prosperity to the Core and Middle rims. The only reason the Outer Rim was so fucked was because even the Empire didn't have the reach to police the entire galaxy.

Finally, the Death Star, touted as the worst crime the Empire committed, was used as a purely retaliation weapon. What was the only planet hit? Alderaan. Not only was it a rebel world, but it was the SEAT of the rebellion's leaders. No shit something needed to be done.

The only other target? Yavin IV, the rebel's military base. Who the fuck would blame them for attacking a military base?

In short, Palpatine did nothing wrong. He was a human-centric leader who brought stability and prosperity to the galaxy in a time of turmoil, disproving the need of the Jedi order.

But why the fuck should this religious institution, that has no real jurisdiction over governmental matters, decide who gets to be in charge? Even if it is a Sith, the man was fucking elected legally.

To put a real world context on it, it would be like if the Catholic Cardinals took over the United States Government because the elected president was secretly a Protestant.

If the Jedi were to have their way, the galaxy would be ruled by a Theocracy, whereas Palpatine and the Empire did not let the Sith religion seep into their politics. Sith 1, Jedi 0.

Palpatine did not start the Civil War. The Civil War only escalated to a war with Count Dooku's manipulations, anyways, what with the creation of a Clone Army. If you want to blame anyone, blame Nute Gunray's over-zealous actions and Dooku's underhanded actions.

>it's a "Sith are evil" rebelfag again

Maybe if you only saw Jedi propaganda, you could delude yourself into believing that.

In reality, the Sith are no more evil than the Jedi. The Sith promote progress and change, and the belief that anyone who works hard enough and smart enough can make it to the top. While the Jedi promote stagnation and continued suffering under the guise of order, and devotion to a corrupt system. The Sith wish to use the Force, while the Jedi only wish to be the Force's puppets.

The Jedi wish to keep the galaxy back, suffering under the weight of tradition, while the Sith wishes to bring the galaxy forward.

It is most obvious in Episode 3, where the plans come to fruition. The Sith manage to beat the corrupt system in order to save the galaxy from it's bureaucratic bindings, and restore peace to the galaxy, while the Jedi attempt to stage a religious revolution to keep the galaxy stagnant, all in the name of a slowly sinking system.

Face it, Rebelfag. The Sith, and the Empire, are the heroes of the Galaxy.

Tarkin spent years training to be the best. And some fucking moisture farmer brat WHO WOULDN'T HAVE EXISTED WITHOUT VADER AND PALPATINE takes all of it away in a single moment.

Grand Moff Tarkin could have brought peace to all humans in the galaxy if it hadn't been for all that bullshit Sith faggotry his boss and his secret butt-body were pulling behind the scenes.

>Even if it is a Sith, the man was fucking elected legally.
No. He fucking wasn't. He was granted emergency power during a time of crisis. A crisis that he himself created.
He then used this power to destroy the very democracy that created him.

He still did nothing wrong. It was only to lure Peter out. At least he didn't cut off a dude's hand and feed it to a fucking crocodile.

While it's true that Palpatine was given emergency powers, this was AFTER he was elected into the chancellorship. And Palpatine didn't even ask for emergency powers, he was given them by the Senate, because the corrupt bureaucrats that were running the place didn't know how to fight a war.

Palpatine only became Emperor when he saw how the Senate was at it's core; a shell of it's former self, reveling in the Core World's excess while the Mid Rim and Outer Rim worlds suffered.

If it weren't for Palpatine, the galaxy would be even more fucked than it was.

I didn't imply alderaan was a slave planet, a slave planet in addition to alderaan was destroyed by the death star.

>Well we could invade Alderaan, remove the rebel sympathetic government and install a more loyal government to weed out the smaller cells
>or fuck it, lets kill billions of likely loyal citizens who had nothing to do with the Rebellion, obliterate its resources into asteroids or space dust and remove a habitable planet from the galaxy.
