He seems so much calmer and self reflective/speculative than he was pre-retcon, and even then by the time they were about to arrive in the new session, Karkat was definitely on the path to end up exactly like that anyway.
Also, I'm assuming Karkat still had to experience that getting forked by evil!Jane bullshit. Assume he was the same old Karkat up until that point, then after being straight up murdered in cold blood and revived, that probably shook him up a whole hell of a lot and made him reflect on a lot of shit resulting in his calmed-down, sort of lost and depressed self.
Also how did he turn into Dave's support? They literally sat on the lilypad and had a pretty evenly split conversation with John, drew some shit for Vriska while bitching the entire time, then they went their separate ways until meeting up again after the battles were all over.
Not to mention he was the first one to jump right into battle, even if he was woken up almost immediately, and it was pretty clear he was meant to be a leader to the revival of his people.

Karkat's arc was progressing as one would expect at the end of Act 5. He'd just reached his lowest personal point at the end of Murderstuck, given it was heavily due to his lack of effective influence that allowed the situation to spiral out of control. The big thing being that he wanted things to go well, but due to his negligence both as a leader and as a friend they went very poorly.
That's where he should have started progressing to become an actual, effective leader and not just get by through annoying people enough that they go along with his thinking to get him off their back, as that's what we're told his leadership was like up until that point by Vriska. That's not to say it wasn't seemingly effective at the time when the trolls needed that sort of direction to avoid conflict, but it had obvious negative ramifications in the long run given the improper handling of the frog breeding.
Or if his future isn't as a leader, then show the process of him realising that, the big problem here is that until the end of the story the trolls still hold Karkat as their leader, Kanaya in-paricular.
So from Act 6 we should have seen him progress through those issues to the very least not be so negligent in his actions, then you've got a fulfilling and complete character arc that doesn't require him to completely change his character that we'd been shown up till that point.
Instead the retcon deposits us with a Karkat with no personal investment in developing as a leader, given he defers to Virksa for some retarded reason. How is that Karkat supposed to achieve anything if he has no personal stakes or goals to meet? Doubly so if one of his big issues he had to work on is just apparently better now, again we're not shown this in the story, it's told to us.
